You all know Scooby from our #Scoobymiles, but now that he’s been in my life for a few months I want to share five things about Scooby you may not know. Even when he’s driving me crazy he brings me a lot of joy–hopefully he’ll make you smile too!
Five Things About Scooby
We adopted Scooby from the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, the same place we adopted Tiger Lilly. I thought we were just going to “look” but once my husband saw him, there was no way he was going to leave without bringing him home.
We had to borrow a leash since we hadn’t come prepared.
When we first got Scooby he did not know how to go up or down stairs! I guess he didn’t have to navigate them during the first few months of his life? It was convenient because my son’s cat was living with us, and we wanted Ivy to feel safe upstairs.
It didn’t take too long for Scooby to figure out how to get up there.
Scooby passed the “cat test” at the animal shelter–he backed away and left a cat alone when warned off–but only my husband can get Scooby and Ivy to coexist like this.
My husband the cat-and-dog whisperer
We used to keep Scooby in his crate, but now he has the run of the house. We kept Scooby in his crate until we were sure he was house-broken–and to make sure no war between cat and dog broke out while we were gone. Now Scooby has the run of the house–at least until Ivy returns for Thanksgiving break–but he walks into his crate on his own to keep me company when I do laundry.

Scooby is a 60 pound lap dog. Tiger Lilly liked to snuggle, and would climb on our laps once in a while, but Scooby is convinced that he is a lap dog. Even if I am sitting on a one-person arm chair he will haul himself on top of me and try to nestle in.
Scooby goes crazy over squirrels. As sweet as Scooby is in the house, he goes crazy for squirrels outside. If we are walking under tall trees and a squirrel jumps from branch to branch way overhead, Scooby will leap in the air Tigger style trying to catch it. He routinely tries to chase squirrels up trees–sometimes dragging me along if I’m not prepared. Here, he was trying to climb on the fence to get closer to a squirrel:
I could go on and on about Scooby and his antics —
do you have a pet that makes you laugh?
I don’t know how you go to a pet shelter and not cry. I’d want to take them all home with me! I”m so glad Scooby has brought so much joy into your life. Cocoa is hilarious and frustrating all at once. I love her to pieces! Dogs do make your life better.
It’s hard not to want to take them all home, but one is enough for us! 🙂
We always crate a new doggie addition to the family. There are so many reasons, but eventually they do earn their freedom. They actually do get fed in their crates, and Bandit’s crate is a communal crate for everyone because I keep a crate pad in there (Lola is a far messier eater).
Gizmo has lost much of his fear of dogs in his old age, and he wants what he wants, so he’ll climb right over the dogs to get to me.
Both Lola & Bandit will lay on us sometimes, but neither of them are really lap dogs. Chester, OTOH, was my velcro dog. It was his mission in life to either be in my lap or be held by me. Maybe he knew his time with us was short?
I’m so glad you have Scooby in your life, and even more glad that you adopted him from a shelter. I feel really strongly about that! Millions of dogs are put down every year. 🙁
Scooby wants to be righbymyside even if I’m trying to cook dinner. We’ve been so luck with our rescues — not having to deal with house training is worth the other habits we’ve had to re-train them on.
Well, all 3 of my were rescues, but both Chester & Lola were puppies (although Lola was 10 months) AND it’s harder to house train smaller dogs.
You absolutely can, but it usually takes longer. Unfortunately Lola has been having some issues in that department lately.
Bandit was house trained, but there were some initial accidents . . . hello cleaning up a poop filled crate at 4 am. But that was in the beginning, he’s fine now. He’s bigger, so he can holder it a lot longer than Lola.
Although I must add, we didn’t crate Bandit when we first got him, since he was about 8 & had lived with dogs & cats before — our mistake. I’m not sure it would have really changed what went down if we had, but live & learn (the hard way!).
Aww I love that you have a post all about Scooby! When we went to get Baylee we were ” only looking” too, but of course we ended up coming home with her.
Thanks for linking up with us!
Baylee was a great rescue too! Such a sweetie!
Scooby looks like an awesome dog!
He really is. 😉
I never would have thought that dogs would have to learn to take on stairs. Sounds like Scooby has been a fantastic addition to your family.
It was so funny to see him try to figure them out. He tried jumping up ….
You make me want a Scooby but I travel too much to have a dog.
Yeah, family travel takes a lot more planning now. It probably wouldn’t work for you right now!
This is lovely! We had a cat who had to learn about stairs when we moved to this house after she’d lived in flats all her life. Morgan, our current incumbent, is the least independent cat ever. If he could spend his life in bed or on the sofa with me, he would. He just this morning “helped” me with my circuits, and he’s taken against my spiky massage ball for no reason and sits and STARES when I’m using it.
LOL. I don’t think Scooby inds any of my workout equipment, he just wants to play when I try to use it.
I love this. I’m glad you found such a sweet dog! I loved my dog growing up.
Dogs can be a real source of comfort and joy.
Scooby is such a cutie! I really hope I can adopt a dog after I [finally] finish residency (and/or fellowship)! I cannottt go to shelters anymore because I want to adopt everyone (that’s probably why I volunteered at rescues for most of my med school years–I knew they’d all still have a home!). I adopted my cat from one of them and she thinks she’s a dog, so it’s like having the best of both worlds? 😛
It’s hard to have a dog when you work long hours. Luckily we have different schedules so Scooby isn’t home alone for too long.
Allie is definitely a snuggle bug, especially when it’s cold. Her mission to be warm, which means mooching off my body heat. It’s actually beneficial since she keeps me warm too!
Dogs are so good at “that face” and I’ve caved when they do that.
I think they’ve learned how to get us to give in! It’s worth it though.
Oh Scooby looks like such a sweet boy! The squirrel picture is funny. 🙂 My cats are my babies and they make me laugh all the time. One thing Christmas does is he smacks my leg when he is hungry. The smack is usually followed by a death stare. Say what you will about cats, but they are never afraid to ask for what they want.
Hah! We learned a lot about cats from Ivy. He’s cute but so mischievous!
Scooby has the sweetest face! I’m so glad he’s settled in so well.
He’s really been a good fit with our family!
Our house doesn’t have stairs so I didn’t realize Luna had never encountered them until we went to a cabin with a lot of stairs. It took her a day to be comfortable w them.
Scooby has become quite the running partner too!
So I guess learning stairs is a thing — funny!
Yay for another rescue dog that found his forever home 😉 You’ve heard of our Max, we’ve had him almost four years! it’s hard to imagine life without him.
They nestle their way into our life pretty quickly!
I love this! It makes my heart so happy that you rescued him too…Enjoy your new family member!! 🙂
It’s still a one person arm chair, one person and one dog.
What a cute laundry audience.
That’s one way to look at it! He is a sweet heart.
