Spring Snow Day

The big news of the week around here was our spring snow day on Wednesday. The forecast was so dire school closings were announced Tuesday evening, before any snowflakes had stuck to the ground. Even the Federal government was closed, despite clear roads at 4:00 am when OPM made that announcement.

When I went to bed, I was doubtful. The rain/snow line of most storms falls somewhere near us, and we usually end up mostly on the rain side. When I woke up, I was still doubtful–and a bit disappointed when I looked out the window and saw bare pavement on the roads.

Spring Snow Day

The weather channel app promised that snow was “in the area” so I decided to head out for a run before it arrived. Light snow was falling, but the roads were still clear–or just wet from being treated. Towards the end of my run the sidewalks were slick with a thin layer of slush, but I tread carefully or dipped into the street. Since the Federal government and schools were closed, most people were still home wondering where the snow was.

By the time I got home, the snow was getting heavier. By mid-morning it was really sticking and piling up on the roads. I was worried about being able to get to my PT appointment, but they called me to let me know they were closed.

By late afternoon, the snow stopped falling and started to melt. My husband shoveled the driveway and sidewalk to keep it from getting icy over night. A snowplow made it up our hill and cleared our street. For the most part, the snow was gone by the time our snow day was over.

Although I didn’t slip and fall on my run, I did end up with a snow day injury. My son–who was home for Spring Break–insisted I take a break from working at home and play some board games. When I got up after beating him at Quirkle my foot was asleep, causing me to fall and roll my ankle. Argh!

Weekly Wrap

Now that work has settled down, I was hoping for a “normal” week of workouts, but the snow and my ankle roll interfered.

Monday: Strength workout, focusing on PT exercises

Tuesday: 5:30 am CycleBar class–this Tuesday class is still at the same time!

Wednesday:  6 snowy miles
I had hoped to get to OTF for the first time in over a month. but by Tuesday evening they had decided to cancel all morning classes.

Thursday:  Strength workout, focusing on PT exercises
Since my PT appointment was canceled Wednesday, I was extra diligent about doing my PT exercises.

Friday: CPY2
I usually get to this 6:00 am class early and relax in the heated room. Lately I’ve been using the time to do some of my PT stretches.

Can you tell I’m doing the “short foot” exercise?

Saturday: Strength workout, focusing on PT exercises  + 27 mi bike ride
My rolled ankle wasn’t happy after yoga, so I decided not to irritate it even more with a long run. But then it turned into such a nice day, I couldn’t let my husband go on a bike ride without me.

Sunday: 9.75 mi run
My plan was to run 10 miles for my main long run before the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run (which is only 2 weeks away!) but when I figured out that my route was going to be short, I didn’t bother to extend it. My left ITB was cranky, and I knew that another 1/4 mile was not going to make a difference on race day.

No more ice, but I was afraid of slipping
on these random piles salt/sand!

I’m linking up with Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap

I’m also participating in the Cherry Blossom Training Link Up that Heather is hosting.

Did you get snow this week?

Are you taking a spring vacation?

  1. The snow on Wednesday was definitely surprising. I also woke up wondering where it was , but we had a bunch of sleet and freezing rain before the snow started falling. Nice job getting in your workouts!

  2. I have never heard of anyone sustaining an injury playing a board game!! LOL I bent over to pick up something yesterday and tweaked my back! Ugh I made it through all of my CB training without any injury and then that stupid thing. I am so behind on my biking!

    • Coco says:

I’m skilled that way. “-) I’m so happy you’ve stayed healthy this training cycle! And now they are predicting peak blossoms – it should be great.

  3. Laurie says:

I live in eastern PA. We got the snow that missed you! Ugh! About a foot. I was supposed to do a 10k trail race on Saturday that got changed to a road race because of the snow. Sooooo ready for spring. Good luck with the Cherry Blossom. It’s one of my very favorite races. Looks like your training is going well.

    • Coco says:

Wow, even areas that got more snow had most of it melt with sunny days Thursday and Friday. I’m really looking forward to Cherry Blossom.

  4. Crazy how we can get an injury not even when we are running! I have never played that board game.

  5. Wendy says:

I pretty much only get injured doing non-running things. I hope your ankle calms down!

  6. Jessie says:

What a great week of various workouts- you definitely keep this interesting/challenging!

I think we’re all ready for spring…winter just won’t go away!

  7. Sara says:

That’s a whole lot of salt on the side walk! We often joke about getting snow days. I wish we could but that will never happen lol. Great job getting your workouts in this week!

    • Coco says:

We have a well-deserved reputation for panic-induced snow days, but when a bit of snow leads to 6 hour commutes, you understand why!

  8. Kimberly G says:

Hopefully that will be the last snow storm on the season. It’s still pretty cold here, but I’d rather deal with cold weather vs snow!

Love the variety of your workouts this week.

  9. Chrissy says:

We were supposed to get a snowstorm last week that was calling for 8-12 inches…and then got a dusting, lol. I was happy because it would have been the 3rd storm in a 3 week time span and I was already all thrown off my schedule because of those days.

  10. Chaitali says:

I’m sorry to hear about your ankle πŸ™ I had the same reaction to the snow. I was a little disappointed when I woke up that day and saw hardly anything but it really started coming down later in the day.

  11. Ah, so sorry about your ankle! Looks like you still got in some solid workouts anyway last week! No spring vacation this time since we just got back from Virginia Beach for race weekend. I guess that was a β€œrace-cation” lol!

  12. Teresa says:

I always seem to tweak something doing normal everyday things too …it’s so irritating too! Glad the ankle is feeling better and hope the Cherry Blossoms are in full bloom for you guys!

  13. Lesley says:

That happened when I was in high school in Massachusetts. My sophomore year, we had a big storm coming and the state declared an emergency, so everything shut down. The storm hit the next day, so I got 2 snow days in a row.

    • Coco says:

When we do get real snow, schools are closed for days. I used to grumble, but when my kids started driving themselves I was glad they didn’t have to go out until roads were clear.

  14. Everything shut down here and the storm ended up fizzling out before it made it to the Boston area. Happy to skip this one! Things are finally melting here and I can actually see part of my backyard.

Sorry to hear about your ankle – no more board games for you! πŸ˜‰

  15. Hope your foot isn’t too bad! We had LOTS of snow last week – I’m done with it!

  16. Jenn says:

Ok, I did giggle a little at your snow day injury. Too funny.

You know, it’s hard with weather because it’s not a sure thing, and I do always appreciate people being safe rather than sorry. We get “false alarms” quite a bit from hurricanes, but things can change so quickly with them that it’s better to be prepared.

That being said, nope. No snow here. We did have a weather day on Tuesday where schools closed for extracurriculars because of high winds and increased tornadic activities. Good times.

    • Coco says:

Yikes on the tornado scares. We don’t get them around here, but after a sign fell on my car during our high wind day, I’d take any warning seriously.

  17. Andrea says:

You’d think by now weather forecasts would be more accurate. I guess a dusting when you were expecting a foot is better than the other way around. πŸ˜‰

  18. Kim Hatting says:

Our snow from last weekend was gone within 24 hours…only to return a week later (this past Saturday). Hoping it’s all gone for good when we return from our spring break trip!

  19. It took a bit for our snow to get rolling but once it did, it was real…but it quickly melted a couple of days later. Spring needs to kick it into high gear ASAP!

I’m sorry you rolled your ankle, how frustrating! Hope you feel better soon!

  20. Farrah says:

I’m sorry to hear about your ankle! That’s never fun. :[[

The snow didn’t end up sticking over here, so I’m super glad that I didn’t have a ton of shoveling to do! πŸ˜› I am so ready for warmer weather!

  21. So sorry to hear about your ankle! How frustrating that you rolled it while at home, not while out on your run.

I certainly hope that Wednesday’s snow was it. I am more than ready for Spring!

  22. Darlene says:

Glad your ankle injury was not serious.

I was in NYC last week and we got snow. The fourth storm in 3 weeks. Ugh
