Captivated By Dynamic Sculptures

Art is one of the many things I’ve grown to appreciate more as I’ve gotten older, and since my husband and kids all enjoy visiting modern art museums its one of the few things we still do together that doesn’t involve eating! Maybe it’s the scientist in me, but one of my favorite types of art is dynamic sculptures, including Rube Goldberg machines.

A few years ago I found this installation in a quiet section of the San Jose airport and was captivated!

Apparently there’s a Rube Goldberg machine somewhere at Boston Logan airport and somewhere at Philadelphia International Airport.  I’ll have to look for them the next time I’m there. I know that in these days of budget cuts spending money on public art installations can be questioned, but I think art really does enrich our lives.

When my kids were younger, we had a toy for building a marble roller coaster on your refrigerator. It took some Googling, but I found it: Frigits.

It was so much fun to build different routes for the marbles, and of course they saw the laws of physics in action and learned problem solving skills as they had to adjust the pieces to keep the marbles on track. It one of their toys I really miss!

Today’s Wednesday Word is captivate.

Is there a type of art that captivates you?

Is there a toy your child has outgrown but you still would like to play with?

  1. I love the impressionists. Been a long time since I’ve been to a museum, but I enjoy wandering around art galleries sometimes when we’re on vacation.

  2. Last fall, my sister and I visited Seattle and I was captivated by the sculpture garden! It was fun to see and I took a lot of pictures. I always wonder what the artists are thinking when they create them.

  3. Ooh I remember the fridge marbles! I am embarrassed to say that even though we live where there are so many art opportunities I have not taken advantage lately. We did go to that “beach” exhibit last year.

  4. Rube Goldbergs are some of the most addictively captivating displays ever. And when you think about the crazy amount of planning and careful adjusting that has to go into every one of them… Mind blowing!

I love Rube Goldberg machines! I had no idea those 2 airports had them. I’ll have to look for them the next time I’m at one of those airports.

  6. Those fridge magnets look amazing! My son is too young for them now but he’s totally into figuring out how things work right now. We have our bikes set up on the trainer in the living room and he loves pushing the pedals to see how it makes the wheels spin.

  7. Total #artgeek here, and I’m not ashamed of it 😉 Modern art intrigues me, but I love the “traditional” stuff a bit more. I actually serve on our hospital’s Art Appreciation Committee…we’re always on the lookout for works of art (usually paintings or photography) to enhance the atmosphere in an otherwise cold & sterile environment.

  8. My kids were into- lego art 🙂 They could make anything out of legos! I do love a good museum walk thru- now to get us all to agree on one might be another story!

I didn’t realize that there was one in Philly airport— I will be on the lookout next time I am there. I love checking out the art museum in Philly– so many really neat pieces and its free on Sundays!

We had a few different version of the marble toy! I loved to watch it. SO, fun I had not thought about it in years 🙂
I usually like scenery type art, but when I was in MT a few years ago I watched a Native American lady pound designs into metal and I was thoroughly fascinated.

  11. That is really cool. My kids and I did a big inventions unit this year.

  12. Your ideal are very wonderful. Dynamic Sculptures is good impression. Love it

  13. I don’t remember the refrigerator magnet toy, but my sons had a Discovery Toys marble tower that they loved!

    Thanks for linking up!

  14. This kind of art is subliminal. I have visited some sculpture gardens and museum but actually usually can not understand clearly artistic intentions or the meaning behind sculptures.

  15. Is there a type of art that captivates you? Mine is drawing, I love it since a child and now still deeper in love with it

  16. Lego is the best thing ever! haha! But I also love your dynamic sculptures. Thanks for the post!
