Fitting It All In

This month I’ve had to face the reality of not being able to be in two–or three–places at the same time. I think ALL the events are scheduled for May 21/22, i.e., the weekend of my son’s graduation. I wish I could join in all the fun around the Fit Foodie 5k and the inaugural D.C. Bike Ride, but I will be a few hundred miles away in Pennsylvania. I even will be missing my firm’s partner retreat in California. While it might be possible to catch a red-eye home Friday night and still make it to Baccalaureate Saturday afternoon, I would hate a flight delay or cancellation make me miss such a momentous event.

This week my dilemma was how to fit in a few Orange Theory Fitness classes without throwing off the rest of my schedule.

I can take an unlimited number of OTF classes this week, and I want to take advantage of the opportunity to try different class times and instructors. But I know I can’t do OTF every day. And I still want to go to an indoor cycling class. And Thursday and Friday mornings I will be in New York. And even though the OTF workouts usually include treadmill intervals, I know I’ll want to go for a “real” run.

Fitting It All In

After flipping between the OTF sign-up page and the Revolve schedule and giving up on figuring out which day I’m more likely to run in NYC, I settled on the following line up:

Sunday: 8:30 am OTF class
Monday: 6:00 am indoor cycling class at Revolve
Tuesday: strength routine at home
Wednesday: 5:15 OTF class
Thursday: running in NYC or strength routine at hotel
Friday: running in NYC or strength routine at hotel or rest day
Saturday: 10:00 am OTF class

My main reason for taking that 10 am Saturday class is to try out a different instructor. That instructor does teach at 5:00 am on Tuesday, but I’m more likely to make a 5:15 am class part of my regular schedule, and I want to see how those logistics work out. The real question is whether I’ll go for a run before that Saturday class!

Deb Runs

Today’s Wednesday Word is dilemma. The dictionary defines “dilemma” as a choice between undesirable alternatives. At least my choices have been among things I want to do!

How do you decide how to fit it all in?

I found this fascinating because I would not have associated the word dilemma with undesirable either. When I have a dilemma typically it’s same as you. I want to do X Y and Z. I do not have the time for all three!

  2. Oh boy, is that my life right now! Since my son broke his leg, I cancelled my PT appointments–it just wasn’t a priority and something had to give. I can always go later when things settle down at our house.

So sorry to hear about your son! When mine was much younger he had a track record of breaking bones around Mother’s Day – spring sports!

  3. It is so hard to fit it all in sometimes! I get such FOMO. I wanted to do that DC bike ride too but already committed to Fit Foodie. Ah the life of a fitness blogger!

You know, if you sat around doing nothing, you wouldn’t have these dilemmas, so that in itself is a very good thing! Congratulations to your son on his graduation — a very exciting time for your whole family! 🙂

  5. This does seem to be a busy time of year for many people.
Kudos to you for considering a 5:15 am class!

It’s actually a pretty good time for me, although I did have to get my husband to take over dog-walking duties.

  6. Choices aplenty. Kind of a good problem, but a stressful situation in figuring it all out. I’m enjoying a brief “calm before the storm” period….my next official race is a 13.1 on June 4th…then it’ll be almost non-stop action for several months.

I just faced that dilemma of having too many things to do on the same day, it is very hard to pick sometimes.
I like that you are always committed to get before the birds sing to fit it all in 🙂

  8. So many choices!!!! Looks like you made a fun schedule 🙂 enjoy it!

  9. Tamieka says:

Oh I totally get the ‘why can’t I be in 2 places at one time’ dilemma.

Omg, I can’t do the fit foodie or inaugural bike ride either and totally bummed. It’s my husband’s bday and he just would not understand me doing them on his bday 🙁

Congratulations to your family and your son!

  10. You know, I was surprised when I looked up the definition of dilemma, and saw that one of its definitions was a choice between undesirable alternatives. I always thought it was just making a tough choice. I guess WW is teaching me the other definitions of some of the words.

Too bad that so much is falling on the weekend of the 21st-22nd, but your son’s graduation is a huge milestone for your family and I’m with you, family always comes first.

    Thanks for linking up, Coco!

I think the dictionary definition is so strange. Why does it have to be a choice between two undesirable options?? Clearly, whoever wrote that definition wasn’t a runner 🙂

Sorry everything seems to be falling on the same weekend. But a huge congrats to your family and your son on his graduation! That’s definitely a momentous occasion.
