What Is Freekeh Food And Why You Should You Try It

It’s been a while since I’ve tried a new food product, so I was glad to be selected by FitApproach and SweatPink to have an opportunity to do a product review and giveaway for Freekeh roasted green wheat.

Freekeh
So, what is Freekeh food? According to the Freekeh website, Freekeh is an ancient grain discovered after young crops of wheat were burned but the remaining kernels were found to be edible–and delicious. According to the ingredients label, Freekeh is organic cracked roasted green wheat. Because it is a wheat-based grain, it contains gluten (i.e.g, it is not gluten-free), but if that’s not a problem for you, here is why you should try Freekeh.

Freekeh

  • it’s a flavorful grain with a slightly nutty flavor and chewy texture
  • one serving (made from 1/4 cup dry) has fewer calories (130) and more fiber (4g) and protein (6g) than protein — much more than even brown rice
  • it cooks up easily on your stove top (add water and simmer for about 25 minutes)
  • it’s delicious on its own but versatile for use in a variety of recipes

I enjoyed Freekeh as a side dish
with a simple weeknight dinner of chicken sausage and vegetables.

I also enjoyed Freekeh in salad
with canned tuna, roasted veggies, and mixed baby greens.

You can find Freekeh at Whole Foods, Wegmans, Fresh Market, and many other grocery stores with a “natural” foods section.

  1. I received some Freekeh from SweatPink as part of a swag bag for a blog post I wrote. I liked it, my husband did not! But I love all the different grains.

I’ve never tried this grain but I definitely want to give it a try now! I’ll have to look for it the next time I’m at the grocery store. I think rice is the grain I use the most.

  3. I have been testing it out too! I really like it and can always use a new grain in my life. Working on some recipes this week too.

This sounds great. I love that it cooks like rice but is more healthy than rice. The name is pretty fab as well. I say it like freak-ay, I’m sure it’s probably a mispronunciation but it’s fun.
