Celebrating National Running Day

Did you know that today is National Running Day? I usually hear about these “special” days too late to celebrate, but this year my fellow Sweat Pink Ambassador Kristin at Jonesin’ For A Run organized a National Running Day interview link up that I am excited to join.

National Running Day
1. Why do you run? I run because I am a runner. I first realized this when I was in Portland for Fitbloggin’ 13 and was excited to get up early and go for a run before the conference events started, even though I’d arrived after midnight the night before after a long day of work, flight delays, and travelling across the country. When I wake up in the morning, my heart just wants to run!

2. How do you plan to celebrate National Running Day? I plan to attend a National Running Day event at my local Road Runner Sports store and attend the first team meeting of my Ragnar Relay team, the No Drama Mammas. (Wondering what Ragnar is all about? Check out my “55 Things” post.)

3. How many miles have you run so far this year? I have logged 377 miles, so that’s probably right give or take a treadmill run or two. 😉

4. What big events do you have on the race calendar for this year? My next race is the Lawyers Have Heart 10K on June 13. (Please consider making a donation to support the American Heart Association through the link in my sidebar –>). In the fall I plan to run the Reston Perfect 10, Ragnar Relay, and Army Ten Miler, but they fall on three consecutive weekends. 🙁

5. Before you leave for a run you must have waterI run first thing in the morning, and while I don’t usually eat before my run (unless I’m running 8+ miles), I do always drink water and I almost always carry water (usually with Nuun). If you’re looking for new hydration gear, check out my review of the OrangeMud HydraQuiver.

6. Do you have one favorite app to track your runs? I am trying to use the RunKeeper app to log my runs, but I usually forget to enter the data until a few days later. Since I always wear my Garmin, I can pull the information from Garmin Connect–except for those treadmill runs.

7.Who is your favorite running partner? I have a friend at work who likes to run just as early in the morning as I do (or even earlier!) and our paces are pretty well matched  We try not to talk about work while we run, but it is a good opportunity to catch up on office gossip. 😉

8. What races have you ran so far this year? I’ve run three ten milers already: The Reston Ten Miler, the Cherry Blossom (almost) Ten Mile Run, and the GW Parkway Classic.

9. If you had to give someone one piece of advice about running what would it be? My favorite running advice is to Run Your Own Race. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else, or even to yourself if you are making a come back after taking time off.

10. Describe your relationship with running in one word: Perseverance
As in Running with Perseverance. 🙂
Perseverance also happens to be today’s Wednesday Word.

Deb Runs

I explain why Running with Perseverance is so meaningful to me on my About Me page.

  1. Carla says:

Oh I LOVE YOUR ANSWER TO NUMBER ONE.
I think that’s why Im not a runner.
My heart doesnt pine for it.
and reading this made my heart (hmmm what would be an emoticon for BREAK??) a bit after your appointment yesterday.
    Wanna walk the Denver 5K?

    • Coco says:

I appreciate your sympathy. I did have to breathe away some tears when I got the diagnosis. I may be on the verge of recovery since Denver is 3.5 weeks away …

  2. misszippy says:

I also love your answer to number one but because running totally speaks to me, too. It’s the best way to start the day. It’s great that you have someone from work to run with–great way to get in that office gossip fix!

  3. Great answers! I didn’t always think of myself as a runner. It took many years and many miles before I felt comfortable with that!

  4. Love the name of your Ragnar team! Sorry to miss you at the RRS event today. I have a family thing I can’t get out of. Happy running day. Be patient those 4 weeks will fly by

  5. I was also doing the math for your recovery and Denver. Glad you should be cleared to run. Have fun at your event tonight!!

  6. briana says:

“I run because I am a runner.” <—Truth! Running began as a way to heal from the loss of my mother but has now become a part of who I am.

  7. Nice interview! Runkeeper is a great app, it’s a lot better now than it was when I started using it 4 years ago! And I so agree about running your own race!

  8. I just love your answer to #1 – says it all right there!

  9. Meagan says:

Happy National Running Day! I definitely know I am a runner, too, because I don’t feel like me when I’m not running regularly 🙂 I think it’s a great lesson in perseverance that resonates in our everyday lives.

  10. HoHo Runs says:

Yes for #9. You can’t compare yourself to everyone else!

  11. Wow. Looks like you had lots of fun stuff planned for National Running Day.

  12. I thought you’d like this Wednesday’s word! 🙂 Loved your answers to Kristin’s questions!

Thanks for linking up, and have a great weekend!

  13. How do you like that Orange Mud Hydra Quiver? Does it jostle around or feel bulky at all? I’d be curious to try one! Great interview. Happy running!

    • Coco says:

It doesn’t jostle. It doesn’t feel bulky, but it is a different feel than my waist belt since it is in a different position. I like it for shorter runs (up to 10 miles) when I really don’t want to deal with a hydration pack.
