My Favorite Summer Produce

Just in time for the unofficial start of summer, today’s Friday Five topic is favorite summer fruits and veggies. Join the link-up with Eat Pray Run DCMar on the Run and You Signed Up for What?! and see what others are looking forward to enjoying from their gardens and the farmer’s market.

My absolute favorite summer fruit is strawberries–especially if I can pick my own and end up with way more than I know what to do with!

My second favorite summer fruit is watermelon. I love having a slab of cold watermelon after a hot run or July 4th race but I also enjoy it in salads, smoothies, and gazpacho.

Speaking of gazpacho, my Mom decided to push the limits of my not-so-green thumb and gave me a few potted tomato plants. Hopefully they will get enough sun and water to thrive because there’s just nothing like home-grown tomatoes.

To keep me from starving until the tomatoes ripen, she also gave me some lettuce plants. Now, lettuce is not really a summer vegetable, but I do love to eat more salads over the summer.

Lettuce

Water is usually my beverage of choice, but when it’s really hot I do enjoy fresh-brewed iced tea, especially if we have fresh mint on hand. When I was buying plants to start my herb garden, there was only one scrawny mint plant left at the garden center. I’m glad I took a chance on it because it really has come into it’s own!

  1. Ahh this made me laugh when I read that you pick more strawberries than you no what to do with. Same here, but I do freeze them, unwashed so they are still nice when I take them out. Also, I cut some up for smoothies and those I wash before freezing!

    Two black hands 🙂

  3. Gosh, I haven’t picked strawberries in ages! When I was younger, my grandmother had her own strawberry patch on the farm and we’d go out each day to pick them. Usually none actually made it back to the house though as we’d eat as we picked LOL.

  4. your plants look great ! I just pulled off my first tomato & a couple of peppers! I love all berries & nothing beats ice cold water melon !

  5. You hit my top 2 fruits–I love strawberries and watermelon!

  6. I never thought you could just grow a lettuce plant. Always thought it was just part of a garden. What a clever idea!

  7. Strawberries, tomatoes and watermelon are all my faves and I love canteloupe. See you at Athleta this weekend?

  8. I’ve never been strawberry picking – need to get on that! LOVE strawberries!!

  9. Great list. I love them straight out of the garden too, but I am not so good at it. My family always had a great garden growing up, but not thanks in any part to me. I didnt not get the green thumb, haha.

  10. HoHo Runs says:

Is that a marigold planted with the tomatoes? How clever. My squirrels would eat both! Ha Ha. Love watermelon too — with SALT!

  11. Watermelon is my fave. I like to blend it with lime juice and mint for a refresher 🙂

  12. where do you go to pick your berries? we go to larriland farms in howard county and it’s awesome!

  13. GiGi Eats says:

Eggplant, Bell Peppers, Shallots, Green Beans – YUM! 🙂 Bring it on SUMMER!

  14. Steena says:

I wish I liked watermelon, but I just don’t. I even had a friend bring over a pasta salad with chunks of watermelon in it, I thought it might be good, nope!
I got a bundle of fresh mint at the farmer’s market yesterday and enjoyed it in some mojitos 🙂

  15. A few years ago, I was so motivated to garden and all I have to show for it is an empty section of dirt in my yard. I couldn’t grow anything – and now I’m just afraid to use too much water.

    Love all of these!!!

  16. Jennifer says:

Hope your tomato plant turns out okay 🙂 I should consider purchasing some herbs.

  17. I’m a huge fan of strawberries, and have them on my oatmeal every morning. Melons – not so much. My mint is taking over my little herb garden!
