My Birthday Triathlon

Run, Ride, Skate?

Last Saturday was my birthday, and as the day grew nearer, the list of things I wanted to do grew longer and longer until I had planned birthday triathlon!

Several women in my Mom’s Runs This Town group were planning on a 5-6 mile run, which was just short enough to tempt me even though I was running the USTAF 12K the next day. I knew I would run on my birthday, I knew the route they were choosing would be more scenic than my neighborhood route, and I knew I would have more fun running with them than on my own.

I also was itching to go on a bike ride with my husband, since we were not able to go last weekend. I doubted that I would feel up for a ride after racing on Sunday, so I added a bike ride to my list of birthday events. I thought the Capital Crescent Trail from Georgetown to Bethesda and back would be a relatively easy, 15 mile route, although it was the scene of my worst fall when I first was learning to use clip-in shoes.

As I was mulling these plans over on Friday, I looked out the window at work and saw the people ice skating at the newly re-opened rink below. If we were going to be in Georgetown anyway, we might as well add ice skating to the list of birthday fun.

Of course, there was Starbucks after my morning run, lunch after our bike ride, and cupcakes from Baked and Wired after skating.

When we got home, these beautiful flowers from my Mom were waiting for me!

After all that, I opted to spend the rest of the evening at home. I fixed a pre-race birthday dinner of spaghetti and salad, and then we watchedΒ The Hunger Games on Amazon Prime, so now we are ready for Catching Fire next weekend!

All in all, it was one of my best birthdays ever, thanks in large part to my husband for being such a great sport and going along (and coming along!) with all of these plans!

Do you plan your own birthday fun?

Are you excited to see Catching Fire?

Yes, we are going to see Catching Fire – I took Dancing Girl and a gang of friends to the midnight showing of Hunger Games and am gathering up the motivation to do it again. I’ll need a nap. πŸ™‚

  2. I do typically plan my own birthday fun πŸ™‚ This year I wanted to keep things quiet. It was perfect.

The flowers are beautiful….as are the cupcakes hehe

I’m not going to let you get away with calling that a triathlon πŸ™‚ haha. Happy belated birthday! Every year I have a hard time deciding which race I’ll do for my birthday, I usually end up doing the one where I know a lot of other people are doing it, it’s always fun to celebrate with people I “know”. One of these years i’m going back to Norwalk, WI to do the Rails to Trails marathon again.
Random fact, ice-skating scares the crap out of me, you’re brave!
