i always buy them slightly firm, stick them in a paper bag and roll up the top. this helps them ripen, then stick them in the fridge once they're soft. they should last a while in there!
I've discovered this summer that fruit that is almost going bad is perfect for a smoothie. Next time maybe cut off what remains that's still good, freeze it, then throw it in the blender.
