Questions About Baked Lays Nutrition
Last weekend there was enough of a break in my son’s wrestling tournament for us to go out for lunch. My husband had noticed a Subway near the venue, and I was happy to have a healthier option than the pizza slices they were serving at the concessions stand.
I ordered a 6-inch Turkey sub and added a drink and chips to make a “meal.” (We still had a few hours of wrestling to get through–I needed fortification!)
As I was nibbling on my chips, three things on the Baked Lays package annoyed me.
- “We start with all natural ingredients . . . .”
Everything starts with all natural ingredients. The real question is what do you end up with? - Ingredients: . . . Corn Sugar.
Is that the “new” name for high-fructose corn syrup? - “Happiness In Every Bite.”
Look no further–all we need is highly processed snack foods!
I also was amazed at how much “marketing” was squeezed onto this small package!
Do you think any of these things crossed the line?
Marketing is INSIDIOUS!! And I can't believe that potato chips have any kind of sugar in them!! That's really pathetic!
The "natural ingredients" is a craze I'm hoping will go away fast. Everything is a natural ingredient at the beginning… And seriously, marketing so people won't be owning their actions annoys me. What's wrong with "yes, we know this bag of goodness is not great for you if this is all you were to eat, but hey, if you're eating a moderate diet, this won't really do much difference". I know, one can dream.
I eat those, and can honestly say I've never been annoyed by them, other than there's not enough in that single serving bag.
I used to, long, long, looonnnng ago really care about getting as few random ingredients in food as possible, but when you consider the serving sizes, sometimes it's not worth it. Like ketchup for example. I used to avoid high fructose corn syrup at all costs, it's IN KETCHUP. But, a serving of ketchup is like 20 calories, so how much HFCS am I getting? Not enough to lose sleep over.
It's not the chips that bother me (I bought them and ate them!), it's the b.s. on the packaging.
Yes Corn Sugar is the new word for HFCS! Baked Lays make me mad too! I'd rather eat regular chips for as infrequently as I eat them. They taste better and have fewer ingredients – potatoes, oil, salt. No "natural" flavors or sugar like the Baked Lays.
HATE all the food marketing crap – like sugary soda with vitamins added – really? "Natural" has a very broad "legal" definition…and is abused!! For great chip flavor with less fat, I prefer Kettle brand baked chips, lightly salted. 20 chips for ~120 calories – and they are just thinly sliced chips, nicely crisp and brown with a little bit of salt and oil (no sugar added :-))
