I was bummed when the weather forecast for last night and today called for rain showers (and ignored the mention of snow!). I really wanted to do a hilly neighborhood run for my last training run, and really did not want to slog out 6-7 miles on the treadmill!
When I woke up @ 6:00, I was glad to see that it wasn’t raining yet, and decided to try to get out for my run and beat the rain. I wore my lightweight, waterproof windbreaker over a long-sleeve tech shirt, and my baseball cap-style running hat over my thermal headband (the temp was 35F) to help keep any rain off my glasses.
I made it to mile 4 before I felt the first rain drops. I was at a point where I could cut my run short, but remembered my son’s reaction when I told him it was supposed to rain for his lacrosse game (“So?!”) and kept to my planned 7 mile route. (I actaully had planned to run 6 miles, but when I figured out where I wanted to run, I realized it would be closer to 7.)
The dark clouds blew over, and I made it all the way back to my neighborhood before it started raining again. I jogged for part of my cool-down instead of walking so I wouldn’t get wet, but the rain never really materialized. The sun and clouds are still playing hide-and-seek, but I’m afraid the rain will show up for real by the time we are sitting on the sidelines at my son’s game.
I want to highlight four excellent things about my run:
- I did not get rained on!
- My time was effortlessly awesome (9:22 avg pace).
- My ITB was totally silent.
- It was my last long run before the GW Parkway Classic!
Garmin Data:
Distance: 7.4 miles
Time: 1:09
Split times: 9:52, 9:09, 9:05, 9:18, 8:58, 9:26, 9:16
(I had no idea those middle miles were so fast.)
Did you read this book? Did you like it?

I know it got good reviews, but I found it annoying. I think the story was too neatly packaged for my tastes. Maybe I’m just jealous because my dog was such a trouble maker.
Don’t trust this innocent face!
Do you have a terrible dog?
Do you run in the rain?
I like your son's reaction! I do like running in the rain, but when it's warmer..not so much at 35. And it's hard to head out into, much better if it starts when I'm already underway. Great run Coco!
PS- I don't think that face looks innocent..I am seeing a "I hope she doesn't notice what I've done" look. RIP Sally.
Karen, I think I red your post before I got the book. I will re-read it. The "big picture" messages in the book resonanted, but I didn't find the narrative very satisfying (or it was *too* satifying, LOL).
Never heard of that book, but I think EVERYONE in the world should read it (and this is based off me not knowing a thing about the book), but it makes me stabby when people get all upset when it's going to rain on race day. My very first race was in heavy, cold April rain. My friend wimped out & didn't show up. Blah. It's just rain.
I didn't know you had a naughty dog! I do too, he's just pure trouble. We should trade for a week, you'd think your dog was an angel after a week with mine.
Coco, I bought the book at Amazon through your link, so I hope you get your commission! 🙂 It was only $5.84 (I'm a Prime member so I'll get it Tues w/free ship) and had very high reviews..I think I'll take it to MI over the summer to share with my dog-loving family.
In my running days, I ran in rain, snow – weather never stopped me :-). Our dog is pretty good about walking in rain and snow too. Still have not read this book but it is in my "to-read" pile….
Oh that's so cool, Vicki! I'll let you know your cut of my cut when the transaction goes through. 😉
You and Steena should know that the racing is car racing . . . .
Beth, I can't wait to hear your reaction to it!

I used to not mind running in the rain but now I am hesitant to go out for some reason. Although, I am getting to the point that I hate running on the treadmill anymore so I am more willing to get my butt out the door even if it is not quite so nice out. I thought it would be raining this morning, but like you, it never really materialized and had a good early morning run.
Glad you got your run in today! I go through phases of being willing to brave the elements (cold or rain) versus preferring my treadmill. Sometimes it depends if I have a good program I can watch on the DVR while I slog on the treadmill!
I loved that book! Dog lover's book for sure. I read it with my book club and the non-dog lovers were a bit annoyed by it. I don't think I realized you had a beagle. So cute. My mom has had several beagles, she only has one right now. She's not so much trouble. My Bichon is terrible trouble… good thing he's cute we always say. Nice run. You're going to have an awesome race!
Thanks, Carrie! My next worry about my race is a federal government shut-down, since most of the race is on federal land!
