Mid-January Musings

We’re barely mid-way through January and social media already has given up on 2026 to look back on 2016 instead. 😉 I’m not active on Insta and don’t even have a TikTok account, but I’ll play along here.

Tiger Lilly and the Blizzard of January 2106
It was a week before the snowplows made it up our hill!

Mid-January Musings

Looking back on 2016, there were highlights for sure—an early January ski trip, my son’s graduation from college, several visits with my daughter—but it also was the year we said good-bye to Tiger Lilly. The photo above is one of my favorites, but also marks one of the first times I noticed symptoms of her degenerative myelopathy. It’s a fitting reminder that life has its ups and downs—often at the same time.

Weekly Wrap

I feel like my workouts were pretty random this week. I usually alternate running and cycling days, but this week I ended up on my Peloton Sunday/Monday, and running Tuesday/Wednesday and Friday/Saturday. 🤷‍♀️ Overall, the week was pretty balanced with  4 core workouts, 2 upper body strength classes, 3 short lower body strength classes, and 1 full body strength class.

I started the week strong with a 90 minute Power Zone ride on Sunday.

Matt “interviewed” Christian during the recovery blocks
which helped the time go by.

My output graph generally reflects the class plan, which was cued as a low-output endurance ride alternating “easy” and “recovery” blocks. The “working” blocks had the same effort goal, with different cadence/resistance combinations to mix things up.

After that, the last thing I thought I’d do Monday was climb on my Peloton again, but I planned a light workout with a core class, barre class, and Sam Yo’s 20 min New Year’s Recovery ride. My legs felt like lead the first few minutes, but did feel better by the end.

Tuesday after walking Scooby I did an upper body strength class and then hopped on my treadmill for a few miles. The weather was so nice Wednesday morning (upper 40s) I took Scooby out and wondered if I should have worn shorts! It felt so good I stretched my run to 5 miles. I paid the price for that “extra” mile by having to deal with heavier traffic on my way into work, but I have no regrets.

Thursday I did a 30 min full body strength class with Adrian and then took Denis Morton’s “Deep Dive: Outkast” ride — where he takes a “deep dive” into their first album sharing his musicology insights.

Friday I took two strength classes that had me thinking of Susanne’s workouts:

I knew from the class plan that JJ’s core class included dumbbell side bends, but didn’t notice we would be doing them on one leg. Talk about a single-leg balance challenge!

Then Robin had me doing Bulgarian split squats off a bench—I did them without weights to focus on my wobbly form.

After that, I hopped on my treadmill for 3.5 miles with Logan.

Saturday I was able to beat the “wintry mix” that passed through, and got in 6.1 outdoor miles with Scooby.

After a week of randomness, I’m craving a bit more purpose in my workout routine. We’ll see what I come up with!

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Did you follow the trend back to 2016?

I did participate in the 2016 flashback on IG–left out the sad passing of my beloved Cleo, but I did share getting Cocoa! 2016 was a good year for me and it was fun to look back!

Nice week of workouts for you. I’m back to my routine, but this weather has me stuck inside–the cold and wind are just too unpleasant. I’m craving moderation….also peace and love

For a week of what you call, “random workouts,” you got in plenty of good ones. I didn’t see the trend back to 2016, so no, I didn’t follow it. You prompted me to scroll back through my January 2016 pictures, though, and yes, we got a lot of snow!

  3. I also loved that JJ core class and the Robin lower body is a nice challenge. If you are looking for more of a structured routine Andy’s TS2 is the most well rounded on the platform. I’m currently trying Rebecca’s new collection and adding in more strength. It would be great to pair with running

I’m want a bit more flexibility that a full program leaves. I think I’m going to re-do the main classes of the strength for skiers program ….

PS This is the first time that I’ve gotten an email response from my comment!! Anyway- sometimes I go to Pelobuddy and get specific classic from programs or donuts to repeat

  4. Your randomness week had a good variety of workouts. I also did the JJ class, and the balance aspect took me by surprise (and gave me a few moments of humbleness, LOL).

  5. Jenny says:

Sounds like you had a great week of workouts! Those strength classes do sound hard. You always do a nice mix of bike/run/strength.
I never go on IG so I wasn’t aware, looking back on 2016 is a thing? Nah… I’d rather just forge ahead! ; )

  6. Catrina says:

Ha, no, I didn’t know about that 2016 look-back trend! But it’s nice to look back once in a while.
Your week might feel random, but honestly it looks solid and well rounded. That 90-minute Power Zone ride alone is no joke. And stretching a run because it feels good is always the right call, who cares about traffic!

  7. Cari says:

It’s funny as folks in our world do the 2016 one.. it was just before I started running so learning more. Thanks for sharing Tiger Lilly. I love the name!
And yes, I almost never regret the extra mile either

  8. Susanne says:

Haha, I love how I’ve become famous for the Bulgarian split squats! Mine are also incredibly wobbly right now, I need to do more balance work at home, a good thing to do in the winter when walking weather rarely happens.
Nice varied week for you! What a treat with the Wednesday morning weather, I wish we could get some of that.

  9. I guess I completely missed out on the 2016 throwback stuff! That’s what being up in the mountains all day will do to you ha! I’m glad you took the time to enjoy your run on Tuesday. Gotta grab that energy when you get it!

  10. Jenn says:

Oooh. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

2016 was a big year for me. I think it was probably one of my highest volume running years, and we did so many things. I’m not going to say I miss that time, but it was cool to look back at it.

  11. Darlene S Cardillo says:

2016 was not a good year personally (I lost my job) but it was a good running year..
