Avoiding Abominable Air Quality

Smoke from the Canadian wildfires made their way back to D.C. this week. For a time on Thursday we had the worst air quality in the world. Detroit was a close second, followed by Dubai.

Mid-day view from my office window.

Avoiding Abominable Air Quality

The skies were blue early in the week. It was so lovely on Tuesday I decided to enjoy my coffee on the rooftop patio at my office.

By Thursday morning, the same view was not the same at all.

To avoid the abominable air quality, I did most of my workouts indoors. I did pretty well on my Peloton Breakthrough Crew bingo card.

The RunChat scavenger hunt inspired me to check out the historic cemetery tucked in the park I often run through.

Weekly Wrap

In other workout news, I used the Peloton bike at my office gym twice—and really enjoyed Leanne Hainsby’s Madonna ride. I also started Vol. 2 of the Pump Up the Volume strength collection, although I started with week 2 because I prefer Andy to Callie and skipped day 2 because it was too high-impact.

Sunday: 3.3 Scooby Miles + 25 Cycling Miles
I took Scooby out for a short run early, then we took out our bikes for my one and only outdoor ride in June.

Monday: 10 min Core + 20 min FB Strength + 3.25 Tread Miles
Tuesday: Core Power Yoga

Wednesday: 10 min core + 20 min UB Strength + 35 min Peloton rides

Thursday: 10 min Core + 10 min Barre + FB Strength + 3.25 Tread miles

Friday: 40 min FB Strength + 30 min Peloton rides

Saturday: 10 min core + 6.2 Scooby Miles
After some rain on Friday afternoon, the air quality was back to OK so I took Scooby out. I was planning on 4 miles, but felt OK myself, so kept going for 6.2.

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

  1. Wendy says:

We had very poor air quality earlier in the week, which forced me inside to the treadmill. It finally moved out–for the most part–and I was happy to see that. I hope yours improves soon too!

  2. Marcia says:

This air quality phenomenon feels like something out of a sci-fi movie. Yuck. We’re getting lots of heavy rain today so I hope that helps.

  3. I am determined to work my way through the pump it up classes as well. I am a week behind you finishing week 3 this week. I am finding that I have to add on bc 20 m of strength is not enough for me but I like the format. Looks like a very hot week ahead!

    • Coco says:

I usually start with core, so that’s 30 min altogether. Sometimes I add an ALW class. Now I feel like I’m missing all the new classes, but I’m saving time not having to figure out which to take. 😉

  4. Darlene S Cardillo says:

our air quality was not great… I was able to get my runs in… humidity and rain was a bigger issue…

  5. Our air quality sucked for much of the week, and when it’s been nicer, it’s raining!

It must be fun to use that Peloton bike at the office! So there’s that for regular work-in, right?

We can’t walk Bandit when the air quality is orange or red (which it was for at least half a week), so he’s not super happy. It’s funny, last week he didn’t even want to walk for much of the week but he did good when he could be out there this week.

  6. Jenny says:

Well, for once I’m not complaining about the heat- it least our air quality was good (if you can define “good” as “hot and humid AF.”) Glad you didn’t let it slow you down! And I’m glad you had a good longer run yesterday- I think you mentioned something in runfessions about not going so long on the weekends? I guess you were feeling really good!

    • Coco says:

Yes, it is ironic that as soon as I decide not to run 6 miles I ran 6 miles. Maybe just taking the pressure off helped.

  7. Catrina says:

I’m surprised about Dubai being in 3rd place. I always thought that Indian cities, such as Delhi and Mumbai, had the worst air quality.
Glad it got better by Saturday! Nice job with the Scooby run!

    • Coco says:

The ranking might have to do with the time of day — it was noon for us, so maybe earlier in the morning in Dubai before things got bad? Lahore, Pakistan was in the top 5 too.

  8. One more for luck! I love that tank (as you know, I have one just like it). I miss Daniel! I have not yet done any of the Madonna rides, but I have been listening to a bunch of the walking and running workouts on my walks (and my one run last week). I need to force myself to stay inside, on the spin bike, so I can knock-out the rides. I hope your air quality improves (and stays safe).

  9. Jenn says:

How is Scooby doing with the bad air? Even going out first thing in the morning, it’s too humid for the pugs 🙁 Leonidas misses his walks.

Loved that you got to have some coffee on that rooftop patio. I love rooftops.

  10. The smoke was crazy. Such a weird haze around town. Only one outdoor bike ride in June?? I hope you are able to get out more in July!

  11. Renée says:

you did what you had to do to get your workouts done, despite the air quality issues. must be really irritating to deal with! You know I’m not a peloton person but kind of jealous of the Madonna workouts so many of you all have done!!

  12. Debbie says:

Good job fitting your workouts in despite the air quality. It’s amazing how quickly the AQ changes with a shift in the direction of the wind, but now we’ve moved from the smoke to the humidity.

  13. Jessie says:

That haze is wild! Be careful Coco! Do you think it affects Scooby?
