2023 Mid-Year Runfessions

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve made way to Marcia’s runfessional, but it’s high time I come clean with some mid-year runfessions. Whether you’re a regular or a slacker like me, don’t miss your chance to cleanse your souls soles and get a fresh start for the second hald of 2023.

2023 Mid-Year Runfessions

I runfess that when I encountered this sign behind my neighborhood school last week, I wasn’t deterred. I know they are doing construction, and figured they didn’t want cars driving through the area.

I got what was coming to me when I encountered a torn up road around the corner!

It’s hard to tell, but I wouldn’t even want to walk across the large, loose gravel—we detoured through the grass. I will have to give up this 1/3 mile loop of my usual route until they put the road back together. 😉

Speaking of my usual route, I runfess that with no races on the horizon and a nagging left hip/ITB/hamstring/??? issue, my “long” runs have gotten shorter and shorter, and I’m on the verge of giving them up for a while. My last few 6 milers have ranged from miserable to tolerable with little joy along the way. I promise I’m grateful to be running almost pain-free, but I’m struggling. I runfess, that as much as I know this is the right decision, it’s hard to let go of my weekend long runs, because it’s what I do.

I runfess that at the same time I was deciding to run less and give my legs a break, I ended up running 4 days in a row — not long runs, but still! I runfess as much as I like Peloton cycling classes, I still prefer running.

I runfess that when I do use the Peloton bike at my office gym, I have to bring a ridiculous number of shoes. I wear my running shoes to get there (and during my strength workout), switch to my cycling shoes, use the flip flops in the shower, and then have nicer shoes for work.

I runfess I keep these bike shoes in my car and the flip flops in my gym bag, so I only have to remembver to pack shoes for the office.

What are your mid-year runfessions?

Yes I know the feeling. I’m running 8 tomorrow even though my plan calls for 5. It’s hard to break the habit.

Hope your rest heals all your aches and you can get back into racing.

I do sometimes due to weather and work run several days in a row.

  2. Yes that’s a lot of shoes to carry around! Absolutely worth it though to get everything in. I always get annoyed when there is construction on a route

  3. Marcia says:

That’s a lot of shoes! There’s a bike path I run on that was closed for “flooding”. I thought maybe it wasn’t passable by bike and I could possibly still run there. Yeah not so much haha! We runners are intrepid!

  4. Michelle says:

Sorry to hear about your hip/ITB/hamstring issue – does it bother you when you ride? Hopefully scaling back on longer runs for a few weeks will help.

  5. That’s a bummer- I hope that hip issue can be resolved soon. Yes, I like doing a longer run on Sundays! But if you have to scale back, I guess the heat of summer is the time to do it.
That’s funny about the shoes. I get it! I have my running shoes, then my old running shoes that I wear to work (ha! No dressier shoes for me, luckily) and then ANOTHER pair of zero-drop running shoes that I wear for lifting weights… and I have cycling shoes, which are just collecting dust right now. It’s a lot of shoes.

  6. That is a lot of shoes to tote around! I do have sturdier flip flops in my car year round. Don’t ask me why, they rarely get worn.

There’s nothing wrong with changing things up. When you’re ready to run long-er, you’ll know.

  7. Wendy says:

Ugh to the ITB pain–Jessie mentioned that doing deadbugs regularly has almost helped eliminate that. I’m intrigued!

  8. Jenn says:

LOL at your shoe collection. Now that’s dedication!

  9. I hope your discomforts lighten-up (and disappear!) soon. I feel kind of out of sorts with my current condition…I don’t feel like I’m slacking (umm, there’s all kinds of cycling happening, LOL), but I also don’t miss the long runs as much as I’d thought I would.
