Life Goes On

My mornng routine was empty and lonely this morning. Sally has been a part of it for the past 12 years–making sure I didn’t oversleep her bladder, feeding her breakfast, putting her outside or taking her for a walk. ~sigh~

Because of my son’s school schedule today, I needed to be done with my workout at 6:15. I decided that I could squeeze in an outdoor run if I did not hit snooze or check Twitter or Facebook before heading out. True to my plan, I got up when my alarm went off at 5:00 and was out the door at 5:15.

Factoring in the time for a short warm-up and cool down, I knew I didn’t have time for 6 miles, but I was hoping to fit in 5. My usual neighborhood loops are around 4 miles, so I had to add an extra bit on the end to make it 5. Aside from running out of sidewalk at one point, it worked out perfectly.

My pace was good, averaging a bit under 10:00 min miles over the whole route, with the flat miles well under that. I don’t know if its my training or the cooler weather that is improving my time–maybe a bit of both.

~Sally~

Sally passed away today, sparing us the final, awful decision of having to take her in to be put to sleep.  She spent the morning in a “hidey hole” that she had staked out under the shrub behind the grill, and departed this world sometime around 10:00 am.

It was Thursday or Friday that she first started hanging out under the shrub. At first she was easily coaxed out, but yesterday she stayed there for longer and longer stretches of time. Still, she came out on her own accord when I went out to get her.

This morning I let her out as soon as I got up @ 5:30. She had had a bit of diarrhea overnight, so I took a few minutes to clean that up before bringing her back in. When I was ready, she was not. She was lying down under the shrub and did not budge when I went out to her. Since I saw no reason to force her inside–it was a pleasant morning and she clearly wanted to be there, to be alone–I left her there.

Over the next few hours, Beau and I checked on her every so often. Sitting in my kitchen with the patio door open, I could hear her tags jingle every time she moved. Because the shrub frames the patio perpendicular to the house, I could go around to the other side to see her face, pat her head, and cuddle her ears. The last time I checked on her I spent a while doing that, and that is the image that I am holding onto. Her beautiful face under the greenery of the shrub, her big brown eyes gazing out. I even thought of taking a picture, but knew that the shadows would make it too dark.

The next time I went out, she was gone. My poor mom was on her way over to say “good-bye,” and I had to greet her at the door to tell her she was too late. (I didn’t put it that way, of course.) I also had to call a dear friend who was on her way over to say “good-bye.” That done, I called the emergency vet who suggested that we call Sunset Pet Services for cremation. They are close by and open 24/7, so we decided to take her over without delay.

Matthew had spent the night at a friend’s house, but we decided not to call him–we didn’t want to wake him up and were pretty sure that he didn’t want to see Sally like this. He called while we were on the way to Sunset, and I told him that Sally “didn’t make it.”

Sunset is in a small industrial part of the city, but in a nice brick building, with a nice reception room. There were two families “picking up” their pets’ remains, so we waited for them to finish before dropping Sally off. The woman working there was very kind. How often does she have to say “I’m sorry for your loss” in her day’s work? She was patient as we said our final good-byes. I unwrapped Sally from the blanket enough to pet her head and smell/kiss her front paw. (Beau and I share an appreciation for the fine aroma of doggie feet.) We can retrieve her remains tomorrow. I still haven’t decided if I want to keep them or put them in some kind of urn. I don’t think so, but I will wait until tomorrow to decide.

I called Kristin to tell her of Sally’s passing. She always was the one to bathe Sally (usually for extra spending money) and once she had her driver’s license, she took her to many vet appointments and on Petco runs.

My friend came over later. We went for a walk and shared memories of Sally, and talked of other things. My dad and his wife came by with flowers and a note card made out of a picture of Sally. My announcement on Facebook was met with lots of kind remarks and text messages. I have good friends.

I will mourn Sally for a while, I am sure. The tears keep flowing, and she deserves every one. The memories of her mischief will be more enduring, though. Her raucous greetings with her beagle howl, her ability to sniff out anything edible no matter how well-hidden and reach things we thought were safely put away, her way of demanding a belly rub and pawing at you if you tried to stop too soon, her excitement for a walk when she heard the jangle of her leash, the times she ran away to get into the neighbor’s cat food or dog food or join the cookout down the street. I will remember her loyalty. The way she followed me around the house, sat at my feet wherever I was, joined me for naps, and made sure I didn’t sleep too late. I will remember her beautiful face, her big brown eyes, and the wonderful smell of her doggie feet.

9 Marvelous Miles

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve made it over to the bike path for a run. It is such a great place to run because the path is varied (some flat miles, some hilly miles), mostly shady, and busy with runners but not too many bicyclists or roller bladers that increase the risk of a collision.

It was perfect “fall” running weather–even a bit cooler than usual for mid-September. Everything felt good, so I decided on my “new” 9 mile route instead of my usual 8 mile route.

I finished my first mile at 10:20, did the next three at about 10:00, the next at 9:40, the next at 10:00 and the last three at 9:45 or less. I was trying to stick to a 10:00-ish pace, but the cool weather made the faster pace feel right.

There are four more weekends between now and the Army Ten Miler, but only one when I will have time for a run on the bike path again.

I capped off my run with some stretching and then a stop at Starbucks.

The rest of my day was blissfully unstructured. I chatted with some friends, read outside on the patio and took a solid 90 minute nap!

No Perfect Words

I wish I had the perfect words to express
The weight of knowing your numbered days
The sadness I feel when I prepare your dinner, not knowing if you will eat
My heartbreak when I see you struggle to stand and step gingerly in the grass.

Would I have paid more attention if I knew
that Wednesday was going to be your last walk?
When was the last time that you jumped on my bed to join me in a nap?

There has been so much joy, so much laughter.
Companionship with no strings attached.
Sympathy with no judgment.
Expectations that I could meet with a scoop of kibble, a biscuit, a walk, a belly rub.

Sally

Now it is time for us to repay the comfort you have given us.
To be merciful and grant you peace.

I wish the decision would be taken from us.
A quiet parting from a deep sleep.
But we love you too much to put our needs before yours
To let you suffer longer
So that, in our ignorance, we might suffer less.

There are no perfect words
But the action that speaks louder will be our final “I love you.”

Yoga, Again

Last night I slept on the sofa to be close to Sally. We have a big black leather sofa that it is easy to fall asleep on, but not very comfortable to stay asleep on. Add that to the fact that I was using throw pillows instead of my own pillow, and it was not a comfortable night.

I fell asleep @ 10:00, but woke up @ 11:30 to news of the shooting at Johns Hopkins University Hospital (eerily similar to the re-run of Gray’s Anatomy that I had just watched), and then got anxious because my son wasn’t home from his “away” football game.  I calculated and recalculated the game start time, likely end time, how long they might have lingered before getting on the bus, and still thought they “should have been home by now.”

He did get home @ midnight, and then Sally wanted to go out, so I probably went to sleep @ 12:30.

By the time my alarm went off @ 5:00, I knew I was going to hit snooze a few times and do a yoga workout.  I also knew that I was going to do my YogaFit workout–no time to mess around with pay-per-view, and no chance I would risk screwing up my DVR the week before my shows come back on again.

I got up @ 5:30, let Sally out, put on some workout clothes and headed down to the basement for my workout. It did not disappoint.

It was the perfect mix of stretching and strengthening and left my back feeling fine.

So, yeah, this yoga thing has its benefits.
