Skiing At Okemo Vermont

Last week I had a great time skiing at Okemo in Vermont. It was our third ski vacation there. We always have a good time and look forward to going back.

Gorgeous snow!

Skiing At Okemo

I was worried about getting to Okemo, but we just about beat the blizzard driving up on Sunday. It was raining most of the way through New Jersey, but turned into messy snow just before we got on Route 87 to head through New York. Overhead signs flashed travel advisory warnings taking effect later in the day. Luckily, we skirted northwest of that, and only had light snow the rest of the way.

Monday’s weather map confirmed we made the right decision to head up a day early. It was much better to be skiing in the snow than driving through it.

Honestly we might not have made it!

This was our first ski trip in a few years with excellent snow conditions and it was amazing! Every day there was fresh snow, and we got to make new tracks on our first runs of the day.

The first day my son and I hit the slopes together—he snowboards, I ski.

We both like groomed black diamonds, and learned that “soft” moguls with fresh snow are much more fun than the icy moguls we usually avoid.

The next days my son wanted to try some double black diamond runs I had no interest in, but we still started out together. Okemo has a few lifts with “bubble” shields. On our first visit in 2022 we called them “covid bubbles” and avoided using them with others, but this year they were a welcome break from the cold.

My daughter-in-law took lessons to rebuild her confidence—her last two ski trips ended with falls that required ski patrol sled rides to ambulance rides to hospitals where concussions were diagnosed. She grew up skiing in Vermont, but is understandably cautious now!

We stayed at Jackson Gore Lodge which has true ski in/ski out access to the slopes. Depending on how you end the run, you can ski right up to the entrance, or you can take the “magic carpet” lift up, which is what we are doing here

Our last day on the slopes started cold and snowy and ended with sunshine and blue skies—gorgeous!

I skied until the lifts closed at 4 pm, and savored every moment.

Last run!

Weekly Run Down

I managed to keep up my Peloton streak doing warm-up, mobility and stretch classes, mostly from the  Strength for Skiers program. I definitely think having done that program paid off. My quads did burn on some fast black diamond runs, but they recovered quickly and I had endurance to ski all day (with a lunch break!).

Saturday I took Scooby out for a run and realized that my legs are tired, but it felt good to move after spending all day Friday driving home.

It hit 60F later, but was still in the 30s at 7 am

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

87 in NY. In my area. lol.

Glad you had great snow conditions for skiing. Perfect for a family vacation.

    Not good for running.

Kudos for keeping up your peleton streak too.

Looks like so much fun! Or should I say snow much fun? Was it cold?

    • Coco says:

It was really cold to me, but nothing that would phase you! The first morning it was in the low teens. By the last day it was in the mid-20s in the morning and low 30s by the afternoon. Layers!

  3. Looks like a super fun ski adventure with nice new snow! You hit it at the perfect time! This winter has been weird with snow in places and not a lot out in Colorado. I’m also a cautious skier these days and will be sticking to the blues next week in Aspen

  4. Melissa says:

It looks like a lot of fun and perfect weather for a ski trip! We have had so much snow on and off here, I’m honestly ready for winter to be over. It’s snowed again this morning!

This sounds amazing! Good thing you got past NY before their big blizzard hit. Everything about this ski trip sounds perfect- the weather, the snow, the company. And then you must have been happy to get back home, reunited with Scooby!

What a perfect call heading up early. Driving through a blizzard is misery, skiing in fresh snow is magic. You had amazing skiing conditions!
I also love that you and your son start the day together, then split for different comfort levels. Such a good balance.
And skiing bell to bell till 4 pm – haha, it shows that your strength work clearly paid off!

  7. Debbie says:

Wow, it sounds like you had a fantastic trip with phenomenal slope conditions! And how smart to leave a day early to beat the hazardous road conditions.

  8. What a great ski trip, including the early drive-up. I’ve considered trying the strength or skiers workouts, for general lower-body strength, not for skiing, LOL.

  9. How great that you had good snow conditions on your ski trip! It’s always such a crapshoot. I can’t believe we are having sub zero temps here in Vermont in March. I really expected spring skiing! Fresh snow really makes moguls more fun for sure.

  10. Jenn says:

Okemo three times! I love that you love it so much! Fresh snow every single day sounds like the perfect ski week. I love that the Strength for Skiers program paid off in real time on the slopes too. That’s so satisfying.
Your daughter in law getting back out there after two concussions takes real guts. Hope she had a wonderful trip!

  11. Cari says:

That’s great that your daughter in law is willing to get back on the skis. My niece and nephew are taking lessons and I toy with it, but I hated it the twice I did it so…
So glad you had a great week.
