May and June Runfessions

The last Friday of June came early this year, but it’s still time to head over to the runfessional at Marcia’s Healthy Slice where we can cleanse our souls soles before we head into July.

May Runfessions

I couldn’t get my ish together for the May runfessional, but I still want to runfess about my lack of running in Switzerland. Even as I was packing my running gear I wasn’t sure it would be put to use. Jet lag kept me from getting up before my husband, and by the time I could overpower my body clock, there was barely enough time to make it to the hotel breakfast. 🫢

No running didn’t mean no activity. Except for travel days, we did a lot of walking and logged > 10K steps each day—especially during our weekend in Lausanne.

June Runfessions

I runfess that after using three hotel gyms in June, I am grateful for my basement gym.

First, they all were so warm—even the fancy one primarily used by local members. I runfess if I always had to run in those conditions, I would hate it—and wouldn’t do it.

So sweaty!

Then there’s the awkward task of staking out space to do a strength workout—even well-equipped hotel gyms often don’t have much free floor space.

I used the mat space in the far lest corner

If the mats look sketchy—or there aren’t any—I’ll forego floor moves, which means none of the crunches, clamshells or hip bridges I usually work into my routine.

Unless I have the strength area to myself, I usually make do with one set of weights. I was appalled to watch a woman at my busy Boston hotel gym gather two sets of weights, a weight plate, and a kettlebell to do her workout—who knows what else she was getting when I snapped this photo!

Do you modify your workouts when you travel?

  1. I’ve been finding my hotel gyms great with lots of equipment. I liked trying out some heavier weights and realizing that I could use them. I know I can always do a Peloton hike. Getting extra walking steps when traveling is the best!

I’m not a big fan of hotel gyms for the reasons you mentioned. I also think I’m getting old and cranky about sharing my workout space LOL

Yeah, I’ve been in some pretty sketchy hotel gyms. I definitely have to modify my workouts when traveling!
The gym being too warm would make me very angry.

  4. I’m not a fan of hotel gyms. I either skip strength work, or do body weight stuff in my room. I try to get in a lot of walking, and occasional running (depending on the location), when I’m traveling.

We’ve been lucky this trip and the gyms have been well appointed and all but one have been nice and cool. The one that was too warm was on a day I didn’t lift so I didn’t have to use it (we always check the gym out immediately after checking in even if we aren’t using it the next day). I workout at 5:30 AM and almost always have the gym to myself until my husband arrives at 6 AM, and often it’s just the two of us.

Just because you didn’t run doesn’t mean you didn’t move!
I really don’t love hotel gyms very much, so I’ll just stick to the cardio equipment. It takes a lot for me to use the gym at all, so that’s the modification.

I have not been great about using hotel gyms lately. They are typically so small and poorly equipped. Stifling heat on top of that is a deal breaker. I totally understand how you’d fail to get your runs done in Switzerland as well. I’d be the same way, unfortunately.
