Exceeding The Speed Limit

Like most drivers, I’m blowing past 55 and not slowing down. Life is more fun when you’re exceeding the speed limit—just make sure your seatbelt is fastened and the road ahead is clear.

Exceeding The Speed Limit

I think this title dates me, because the 55 mph speed limit is not as universal as it used to be. It was born of the oil and gas crisis of the early 70s and endured as a national law through the late 80s. The beltway around D.C. still has a 55 mph speed limit, but it’s 65 mph in the express lanes.

I actually did slow down on my 55th birthday this week. I did minimal work from home and enjoyed a mid-day mani/pedi appointment. I also enjoyed watching this special birthday visitor. He hung out in my small suburban backyard all day.

He was so beautiful, it was hard to tear myself away.

I also did three live Peloton classes on my birthday and got a birthday shoutout in one of them—Jess Sims’s tread class. I didn’t expect a shoutout in Ben’s 10 min strength class or Hannah’s premiere run, so it was all good.

Work also exceeded the speed limit this week and has my stress levels running high. Clients have new projects they want done “by the end of the year,” which seems like a long time until you write off Thanksgiving week and the week after when we have our (rescheduled) firm retreat in Orlando. I can only do what I can do, and I am not going to miss opportunities to be with friends and family after two years of covid-induced isolation.

Weekly Wrap

I kept up with my new routine, including going back to yoga, using a Peloton bike at my office gym, and doing those PT exercises Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday:

Monday: Core + Bodyweight Strength + 3.5 mile Tread Run
Tuesday: Corepower Yoga
Wednesday: Birthday Bonanza (see below)
Thursday: Core + Lower Body Strength + Peloton Ride
Friday: Upper Body Strength + 3.25 mile Tread Run
Saturday: 9.25  mile Run with Scooby
Sunday: Core + FB Strength + Peloton Ride

I planned my birthday workouts around two live classes—Ben’s strength class at 6:30 and Jess’s run at 7:00. I slept in until 5:30 😉 and fit in a few classes around those.

My son had spent the night, and I asked him to wait to leave for work until 7:35 so I could get a sweaty birthday hug. 😛

Later in the day I hopped back on my tread for Hannah’s premiere run at 2 pm. I took it as a walk because I didn’t want to have to take another shower before my birthday dinner.

It was a great class even though she almost had me in tears with her tribute to her Dad—who was in studio running on a tread.

Thursday at my office gym I took Camilla’s Veterans Day class. I’m not going to lie, I chose it for the playlist, but I think it’s great that Peloton and the instructors make this effort to recognize veterans. Camilla’s husband was an Officer in the Coast Guard, so she also shouted out military wives.

The weather for my long run on Saturday was probably 30 degrees cooler than last week—I had to dig out my headband and gloves. This run felt a lot better than last week’s, so I was happy.

My hip felt fine throughout, but complained a bit afterwards. This week I had two days in a row with no hip pain, so I am going to be optimistic that it is getting better,

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

What is the main speed limit where you live?

  1. Hooray for a better feeling hip! Sounds like you had a great birthday.

It’s a mix of 55 & 65 here. TX was often 70! Once you got out of the cities. 🙂

And then there’s what people actually drive . . .

Hey, I actually remember waiting in line to gas up my car!

  2. Jenny says:

Happy Birthday!!! I love the “birthday bonanza” of workouts, and glad you got your shout-out. Also glad the hip is feeling good- seems like the curse of the glutes is finally lifting.
Yeah, it’s funny- I guess you don’t see those 55 speed limit signs anymore. That’s okay- before you know it we’ll be 65 (ack!) and we can use the 65 mph signs.
Sorry about the work stress- I hope you get some nice time off this week!

  3. Catrina says:

I like how you managed to sneak some nice little festive breaks in your heavy schedule – a sweaty hug, a mani-pedi, lots of workouts and an evening dinner. Well planned!!
That firm retreat in Orlando close to the end of the year seems to be poorly timed, though. I’m sure all your colleagues are under the same end-of-year pressure as you are.
I know you will enjoy it, nonetheless! Looking forward to hearing about it.

  4. sounds like a great birthday! Although, sleeping until 5:30 is not sleeping in. Way to fit in all the Peloton classes to get your shout out

  5. Debbie says:

It sounds like you had a nice and somewhat relaxing birthday! Sorry to hear that your upcoming weeks are going to be so crazy at work.

  6. Darlene S. Cardillo says:

Glad to hear you enjoyed your birthday.

And that the hip is getting better.

My work week was definitely over my limit. Back to work. Driving and dressing up. Not ready. It’s exhausting.

Hope you have a great holiday

  7. Wendy says:

Speed limit? What speed limit? The main speed limit on our highways is 70. But I feel like every time I am on the highway, it’s just like the autobahn. It amazes me when I have the cruise control set to 78, people are just blowing by me.

I’m glad you had such a nice birthday. That young buck sitting in your backyard was just so cute! I wonder if he was waiting for a doe? :p

  8. HA! I had a short span of 55 speed limit on a construction area yesterday on the Interstate…and it felt like a snails pace. I slowed down to maybe 65, and people were still flying by me. Glad you had a great birthday…you got in a LOT of classes to commemorate the occasion!

  9. Happy Birthday! Sounds like a great day. Except for waking up early 🙂

  10. Michelle says:

So glad to hear your hip’s starting to feel better!

Love your birthday bonanza of workouts and how fun to get a shoutout from Jess!

I feel like your clients always come at you with these late-in-the-year projects – what’s up with that!?

  11. Seems like the speed limit here is how ever fast you want and hope for the best. Haha! Sounds like you had a fun birthday. I’ve resigned myself that the year is basically over already. It’s a whirlwind for sure. What a special birthday visitor to your yard!

  12. Kim G says:

Sounds like you had a great birthday – complete with the special visitor and the birthday shoutout from Jess!

Gotta love the clients that want new projects done by “the end of the year”..like that isn’t just a few weeks away – ugh!

  13. Happy birthday and yay for birthday shout outs! My biggest wish in Peloton is to get a shout out in a live class one day. I’ll have to try Hannah’s class, she was a cycle instructor for the longest time right?

I’m glad your hip is feeling good and you’ve had a few pain free days! Those niggles can be so irritating when all you wanna do is run.

  14. Jenn says:

It’s 70-75 MPH on 95. And no one adheres to that. It’s a free for all.

55 looks good on you! I hope you had the best birthday!

  15. Jessie says:

Happy birthday! What a fun week. I’m glad you got a shout-out!

Good luck on the work projects and the retreat in Orlando (at least it will be warm!)
