According to Shakespeare, Caesar was warned to beware the ides of March, and that’s the day he was assassinated. According to Wikipedia, the ides of March typically would have been the first full moon of the year. Applying our calendar to theirs, it falls on March 15.
The ambulance sirens were not tolling for me.
Beware The Ides Of March
March 15 started off well enough for me. Although the Peloton bike at my office gym was glitchy, I hopped on the tread instead for a fun HIIT + Hills run with Camilla. It turned into the Ides of March when I went to a meeting with my Mom. Long story short, she fell down some stairs (basically missing the last step), and so that ambulance above was called for her. 🙁
She knew right away that she’d broken her hip and she was right. After a few hours in the ER she was admitted for surgery and since she has a private room, I’ve been able to stay with her. While I personally have been able to sneak out for at least a walk, I now completely understand that sometimes you really do not have any time to workout. I could leave my mom if my husband was with her, or if she was comfortable with nothing else on her agenda (no PT, etc.), but if it was my child in the hospital or if I had children at home, it would have been even harder to take those 20-60 minutes for myself.
Weekly Run Down
This week started off well enough. I earned my Peloton 5K minute badge doing JJ’s upper body “push” workout on Sunday and made it to yoga on Tuesday. After the Ides of March, I squeezed in a workout during one of my afternoon runs home to shower and re-pack my overnight bag, and snuck out for a run from the hospital on Saturday morning.
Sunday: 15 min Core + 30 min Upper Body + 20 min Peloton Ride
I usually go to church at 8 am, but we had a special service at 9, so even with the time change I had time for a solid workout.
Literally using all the weights for JJ’s workout:
8 lbs – skull crushers
10 lbs – front and side raises
15 lbs – chest flies, overhead press
20 lbs – chest press
Monday: Core + 5.0 Tread Miles
I started the first weekday of DST with a solid tread run. Those endorphins helped wake me up more than any amount of coffee would.
Tuesday: Corepower Yoga
Wednesday: Core + 30 min FB Strength G&L + 3.3 Tread Miles
Office gym day, with an early start to fit it all in. I had hoped to use the Peloton bike, but it was glitchy. I could log in, but then it kept freezing. After a few tries I switched gears and hopped on the tread — thank goodness I stocked up on endorphins for the rest of the day. 😉
Thursday: Walk with Scooby
Once my Mom’s surgery was scheduled, I dashed home to shower and pack an overnight bag. The weather was amazing, so I snuck in a walk with Scooby before dashing back.
Friday: Core + 30 min FB Strength + 3.3 Tread Miles
After a rough morning, my Mom was feeling good after lunch—even without morphine. 😉 I took a few hours to go home, and hopped on the tread while I started a load of laundry—there’s only so many tops I have that strike the right balance of comfort and warmth for the hospital.
Saturday: 6.15 mile run
It took a lot of planning, but I managed to sneak out for a 6 mile + Starbucks run. I ordered her meals for the day as soon as I could @ 6:30, did a 6 mile loop from the hospital (which is in a familiar neighborhood), ordered Starbucks for both of us, and was back in her room, with coffee, chai, and breakfast in hand by 8:30. Phew!
A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.
Are there lines from Shakespeare you find yourself quaoting?
I’m so sorry about all that has happened over the past week with your mom. It’s good you’ve been able to squeeze your workouts in–I’m sure that has helped with all the anxiety and stress this week has brought!
And no Shakespeare quotes from me, at least none that I know of!
Thanks. It’s hard, but I know it’s harder for her.
It’s surprising how many familiar “sayings” he came up with.
That’s so scary. I have missed the last step on our stairs several times. I’m only 13 years younger than your mom (clearly she had you when she was a child). I do have low bone density, too.
I’m glad you could be there so much for your mom, but I know all about time in hospitals & rehabs. Way to much time in those places.
I truly hope and pray things start looking up for you both! How sweet of your husband to help with your mom, too. I lso hope you are able to get in more exercise in the coming days!
When my mom broke her hip visiting hours were shortened due to COVID, so I had time to work out in the mornings before going to the hospital/rehab.
I am grateful this didn’t happen during covid times! They do still have a mask policy at the hospital—it’s surprising how quickly I got used to that again.
Yes, my Mom had me young. 😉
I’m so sorry about your mom and everything you and she have been through this week. It’s amazing you were able to get in any workouts at all. My MIL has fallen many times and has shattered her wrist, broken her leg, but knock wood, not the hip…
My mom fell down her basement stairs and did “something” to her hip that she refuses to have looked at. Sigh.
I hope this week is better for both of you.
I’m grateful that work has been relatively calm and my husband can take care of himself and Scooby. 😉
I guess the Ides of March was my curse this year as well. Sounds like your mom is on the road to recovery. You are a very sweet and dedicated daughter
I noticed that in your post. (((Hugs)))
“The fault lies not in our stars, but in ourselves.” That quote doesn’t really apply to anything but I thought I’d throw it in there. I’m SO SORRY about your mom! That’s terrible for her, and you. You did an amazing job of getting workouts in in spite of everything. I especially like your Saturday morning- that’s a great feeling, getting in a good run before the day even starts.
Good luck this week- I hope your mom’s recovery goes well.
Thanks. It’s a bit of a roller coaster, but she is making progress.
Sorry for all the stress, frustration and anguish of the week. I hope this week goes much better for you and you mother. And, what you said about the endorphins working better than coffee? Oh yes! I’m a firm believer!
I knew you’d fell the same way!
I’m sorry for all that has happened with your mom and the stress you both have been dealing with. I hope this week goes better and that your mom’s on the road to recovery.
Thanks. She is getting better.
I hope your mom’s recovery goes well. You’ve got to take care of yourself so you can take care of her so don’t feel guilty making time for your workouts.
Thinking of you and hope your mom is on the mend soon. So sorry about all you are dealing with! You definitely need to take the time to care for yourself.
My Shakespeare line that I always remember? “Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow. Creeps in this petty pace from day to day.” There’s more but I don’t remember every single part of it.
That’s one that sticks with me too, even though I’m not sure what it means! 😉
I’m so sorry to hear about your mom! When my Dad was in the hospital I spent hours with my mom just keeping her company and waiting for those few moments we could catch with the right doctor when he stopped by (of course we never knew when that would be!). I’m glad you are there for her. I hope she is on the mend soon!!
Yes! It is so frustrating. So many people coming and going, but you never know when.
Oh dear! This is exactly what I’m afraid will happen to my father one day. He shuffles instead of taking proper steps. It’s a question of time until he will fall.
But well done on getting your workouts in! I fully agree with Debbie – you’ve got to take care of yourself so that you can take care of others.
Wishing a speedy recovery to your mum!!
Thanks. I do need endorphins to get through the day. 😉
I am so sorry for everything that is happening with your mom. That’s just so much.
Im glad you have Scooby to help get your mind off things, and also that you have been able to work out. It will help keep your stress down.
Thanks. The workouts really do help. And my favorite Peloton instructors make me laugh or toss out an inspirational quote I can latch onto.
I’m continuing to send good vibes to your mom and wishing her a speedy recovery. You’ve been so great during the whole incident and I am glad that you were still able to carve out some time for yourself.
Thank you! I’m lucky I have no obligations at home, so I can take those few hours away from the hospital for myself—and Scooby. 😉
