What Am I Training For?

When I first heard about the Tour De Talbot bike ride, I was a bit ambivalent. With my ankle finally feeling better, I wanted to be running. Then, I rolled my foot and was glad to have a cycling event to look forward to. Now that that’s finally better, I’m back to having to make hard choices about how to spend my weekends.

Find out more on the Tour De Talbot event page.

What Am I Training For?

The Tour De Talbot is a low-key ride that takes place on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. (That means the terrain should be pretty flat.) The coolest part is that the 40 mile and 100K routes get to take a ferry along the way!

Tour De Talbot 100K Route

Gosh, that looks like a long way!

As of now, we are planning to do the metric century, but if it turns out to be a hot day we might drop down to the 40 mile route. A flat 66.2 miles could take us ~ 5 hours with a few breaks, but I’m not planning on any long training rides between now and then—it’s on June 4th. We will do a few 20-30 mile Conte’s rides, and hope our general conditioning will carry us through.

Since I am prioritizing a weekend bike ride over a weekend long run, I decided to sign up for the 5K of the 2022 Lawyers Have Heart event on June 11th. I used to always do the 10K, but realized the 5K sucks so much less.

that you then run over.

Doing the 5K also gives me an excuse a reason to do short Peloton running classes on my treadmill. I know some people are tread haters, but I love a hard interval workout on my tread. I’d also love it if you would visit my Lawyers Have Heart fundraising page for the American Heart Association and make a donation. 😍

Weekly Run Down

Having the Tour de Talbot on my calendar helped me hold back from running every day now that my foot is really better. I even did a 45 min Peloton ride. I also worked through more of the Peloton Red Hot Chili Peppers strength classes. So fun!

Monday: Core + 20 min LB + 3.5 Tread Miles
I picked up my new new running shoes on Sunday—a fresh pair of Brooks Adrenaline—and had to test them out on my treadmill. They felt fine, so I will be keeping them.

New Running Shoes on TreadmillI took that first run as a walk-run-walk with Scooby.

Tuesday: Core + 10 min UB + 45 min Peloton Ride
I’d heard good things about Jenn Sherman’s Mixtape rides, but this one was a bit on the mellow side for me. She picked songs with a “mother/mom” theme for Mother’s Day, so that was cute.

Wednesday: Core + 5.3 Scooby Miles
I laced up my new shoes and took Scooby out for a run. Since it is light so early now—yay!—I could do the park loop I’ve only done on weekends over the winter.

Thursday: Core + 30 min FB + 20 min Peloton Ride
Peloton didn’t promote its Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage classes very much, but Leanne’s K-Pop class caught my eye. I thought starting with a warm-up would be a gentle way to ease into the ride, but Matt’s warm-up was not easy! My legs do not go 90-100 rpm until after they are warmed up!

Emma’s latest 5 min post-ride stretch is a new favorite.

Friday: Core + 10 min UB + 4.75 Treadmill miles
It was pouring when I got up, so I made it another treadmill day. Loved JJ’s funk playlist, and Daniel’s pop punk classes are always great.

Saturday:  Core + 2.4 Scooby Miles + 30 Mile Bike Ride
I couldn’t not run on Saturday, so I took Scooby on a short run before we joined the Conte’s Old Town ride. It was so humid! By the time we started riding it was sort of misting. It got drizzly, but we never got rained on.

That empty lot behind me was a church building a few weeks ago!

Sunday: Core + 4.5 Scooby Miles
I had a busy morning on tap, but had just enough time for a pre-run 10 min core class and 4.5 mile run with Scooby. I did have to end my shower with cold water to stop sweating before getting ready for church. Isn’t it too soon for weather like that?

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Do you have different running routes in different seasons?

  1. A bike ride (race, tour, whatever you call it) sounds like a great idea during the Summer. Because apparently that is what it is now!

You know I’m not a tread hater. I do love running outside, but so, so happy I have a functioning mill again was able to get that run in midday without melting yesterday. We need a minute to acclimate to heat!

I think signing up for the 5k option was a good idea.

I am never here in town for the Lawyers race but one of these years I will make it! I did a similar bike event on the eastern shore a few years ago it is pretty flat and fun.

I almost was going to miss it myself, but I’m doing two trips to Chicago that week instead of staying. 😛

  3. Catrina says:

Oh, that’s sounds like an exciting bike event, Coco! I love that you get to use the ferries in between.
Yes, go for the 100k and don’t even consider opting down to the 40-miler. That’s not long enough for you, even if it should be hot!

Your bike rides sound so fun! I have mixed feelings on flat vs. hilly (or even rolling hills) with the bike. The hills at least give you some coasting time where the “flat” routes often require constant pedaling (but little resistance). Both definitely have their advantages and challenges. I have been loving the Red Hot Chili Peppers workouts!

    • Coco says:

I agree that flat courses can be harder. And I’m never going faster than 25 mph on a flat road — and will average under 20 mph.

  5. jenny says:

Wow, you had a nice varied week! I think your long bike ride/shorter race plan is a good one. Save the longer races for cooler weather. I went through a phase a few years ago where I did all my speed work on the treadmill, and it worked really well for me.
Most importantly- glad your foot is better!

  6. Wendy says:

I’m going to get out on my bike again too–like you said summer biking is better than summer running! I agree, the 5k race is the way to go. Especially if this early heat is any indication of what is to come!

  7. Your bike event should be fun! The 5K option sounds like a good choice. I hope this means your foot is feeling good!

  8. Cari says:

How cool that you’d get to ferry
I love knowing exactly where you’re running for the Heart. Thanks for link, going to do it now because I hate it with FB donating
Sounds like a sensible plan to balance 100/5KM needs

So glad the new sneakers felt great! You know I’m a huge fan of Brooks 🙂 I’ve noticed that Peloton isn’t doing a great job of promoting some of their badges lately. I often find out the class has a badge when I go to the collections tab.

Your bike event sounds like it’s going to be so cool, and it must be nice to train for something again too!

  10. Marcia says:

The ride sounds like fun! You’ve inspired me to go get my flat tire fixed and my bike tuned up. It’s too nice out not to!

  11. Darlene says:

That bike ride sounds like a great idea. I bet you enjoy it. I need to get on the bike again.

GL with the 5k… I think they are so hard… I guess it’s because I want to be faster than I am.

  12. runswithpugs says:

Oh, this sounds so exciting! I love these kinds of adventures, and I wish we had more cycling things like this available down here. Hi, Scooby!
