Celebrating Perseverance

As I enter my 6th week of recovering from my fractured rib and hand, and my 50th week of staying safer at home, I’ve got to say it’s all gotten quite old. Instead of wallowing in my own whininess, I am celebrating the perseverance of the scientists and engineers who have worked for years on NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance mission.

I’m sure they endured set-backs and delays that made them wonder if they ever would see the rover land safely on Mars. It’s impossible to watch the landing video without cheering along with them.

Weekly Run Down

I can’t top that, so I’m going to jump right to my weekly workout recap. As I hinted above, I’m still coping with a sore hand and a sometimes sore ribcage. With no outdoor runs, my photos are getting repetitive, but it’s the only way I can remember what Peloton classes I’ve taken. 😉

Monday: 40 min Strength + 30 min Bike
I woke up early and had time to try a strength for runners workout. I was glad when I only had to modify a few moves. The playlist on the Motown Ride was so fun!

Tuesday: 20 min Strength + 45 min Tread
I thought a Heart Rate Zone run would be a good way to keep the intesity moderate, and overall it was. I think next time I will wear my OTF heart rate monitor so I can see my zones on that app instead of having to keep checking my heart rate on my Garmin.  Or, I could figure out how to link my hrm to my treadmill ….

Wednesday: 10 min Core + 20 min Tread + 30 min Tread Bootcamp
This Tread + Bootcamp combination worked so well, I may repeat it–although the last set of the strength portion was hard to finish!

Thursday: 20 min Strength + 30 min Treadmill
Another Motown playlist–this time on the treadmill! Enjoyed the bit of history Matty shared too–he does his research for these themed classes.

Friday: 50 min Strength + 30 min Ride
It was too icy to walk Scooby, so I had more time for my workout–and ended with my 850th Peloton class. The first 2/3 of this strength for runners workout was mostly RDLs. lunges, and squats, and then we ended on the floor with hip bridges, leg lifts (!), and side planks.

Saturday:  10 min Strength + 65+ min Treadmill (7.1 miles)
I learned that stacking 45 min and 20 min treadmill classes can make 7 miles tick by. This 45 min Black History Month run from last February was especially good for that, as we worked our way through the 80’s with a different song for each year.

While my workload was weighing on my mind, I couldn’t resist joining our Saturday morning Zoom ride. Even keeping the resistance light and the pace conversational, I still broke a sweat.

Sunday: 10 min Strength + 30 min Treadmill
Did another 2019 BHM class with Jess Sims’s Pitbull run which also was an Artist Series run. Since at least 10 others I “follow” on the Peloton app have taken this class, I also earned the “swarm” badge.

That wrapped up week three of my new workout schedule following my plan to reach my monthly/yearly mileage goals. I logged 23 miles, and am well on my way to meeting my February mileage goal.

Thanks to Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down link up.

Do you think the Perseverance will find evidence of life on Mars?

The Mars Rover landing was incredible. The things the NASA scientists come up with and are able to bring to fruition are amazing and so inspiring. While I’m not looking forward to returning to Chicago, I am hoping to join you all for a virtual ride again soon!

  2. That Mars landing was kind of cool. No I don’t expect to see a photos of a bunch of aliens running around but this year has been so wacky I wouldn’t be totally surprised. Way to keep up your running and workouts while navigating your injuries. I also liked that Motown ride o Alex’s

  3. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

You’re staying so consistent with your with egg yours, even with a compromised at the moment. That Motown workout sounds awesome, so ch great music! Great riding with you yesterday!

  4. Wendy says:

It’s really impressive how you keep up with your workouts while recovering from your fractures! Week 50 of staying home? You aren’t kidding it’s getting old! Hang in there.

  5. Darlene S. Cardillo says:

That Mars landing was exciting. Didn’t you love that movie?

You are certainly active in spite of your injuries.

Nice chatting with you on the bike.

    Hope everything heals well

  6. kookyrunner says:

I’m impressed that you’re still able to be so active despite dealing with your injuries!
You can never go wrong with Motown classes!

  7. Wow you’re doing a great job of wracking up your workouts despite your ribs and hand! I just realized we both took Matty’s Motown run on Thursday – it was actually my one outdoor run this week.

  8. Catrina says:

I miss your outdoor selfies with Scooby!
Well done on doing ALL the workouts. I hope you heal soon and that the weather improves as well!

  9. Lisa says:

Great job with your workouts this week! Glad you are still able to do so much even while recovering from your fractures. Have we really been home for 50 weeks? Wow.

  10. I’m so impressed with how active you have been able to be, despite everything! Hope you are recovering alright.

  11. Jenny says:

Most people (not us crazy runners) would lie on the couch and do nothing if they broke their hand and rib, but instead you’re out there (well, in there) crushing it! Sounds like you had a great week!

  12. I think it’s highly doubtful we’ll find Martians, but never say never!

It’s amazing how much you do with those sore wrist & ribs, Coco!

Things will look up. Winter is coming to a close, even though it may feel as though it won’t, it always does! And hey, we don’t live in TX! Having lived there, I know how cold it can get — but we never saw it snow that much, or be cold for that long — or had to endure what many of my friends are enduring. 🙁
