Obsessive October Runfessions

Trick-or-treating may not be happening until tomorrow–if it’s happening at all this year–but since it’s the last Friday of the month it’s time to make our way to the runfessional at Marcia’s Healthy Slice. There, we can cleanse our soles with our October runfessions and get ready for a fresh start in November.

October Runfessions

Thanks to Lacey and Miranda for the Fairytales and Fitness Friday Five link up.

Deborah and I will be hosting the November Ultimate Coffee Date next weekend. We’ll open the (link-up) doors Friday November 6th, and keep the coffee brewing.

Obsessive October Runfessions

I runfess that it felt good to let go of my 100 mile/month running goal that snuck up on me after I turned my daily walks with Scooby into (nearly) daily runs. With our trip to visit our daughter, I kicked off October with four consecutive days of no running, and took a few more days off here and here.

October 2020 Running Miles

I runfess, after seeing this mileage total on Thursday, I realized I still could hit 100 miles for October if I run 5 miles Friday and 8 miles Saturday ….

I runfess that my plan to take it easy on Fridays so my legs would be fresh for a longer Saturday run did not pan out. I could never talk myself into an easy day on Friday, and instead found myself choosing a challenging Peloton Bootcamp or even a long bike ride. None of that slows Scooby down, though.

Scooby and his shadow

He’s gotten faster with the fall weather!

I runfess that I am struggling with how to tell my husband I’d like to return the Tiffany jewelry he got me for our anniversary and invest in heavy duty stall mats for my basement gym instead. He’ll tell me we can afford both, but maybe you’ll understand that new gym flooring would bring me joy.

basement gym

This brown wool rug has to go–
it’s so old it sheds when I touch it.

Speaking of my basement gym, I runfess that I have found myself studying reviews of the Peloton bike and considering alternatives. It only took a hint of cold, wet weather to make me realize I might want an indoor cycling option for the coming months. I know I’d love the bike, but I wish the monthly membership didn’t jump from $12.99 to $39.99/month–I guess because of the leaderboard experience and additional data they store for you? But think of all the data Garmin stores for you for no additional charge.

I runfess, my real source of hesitation is feeling that investing in a Peloton would be resigning myself to stay-at-home workouts for the foreseeable future. Once I feel safe, won’t I want to break out of my basement gym and never look back?

Have you made any improvements to your home workout space?

I didn’t have a goal of 100 miles per month this year, but that’s what’s been happening, so….

The peloton would be so tempting but I do love to run outdoors. I need the fresh air and natural light!

  2. Catrina says:

I just checked the price of a Peloton bike (USD 1’900) and saw that the monthly fee of USD 39 is mandatory for one year. Mandatory! That would make me think twice.

Haha, yes, and I’m with you about the rug!

    • Coco says:

I’ve already lost $$ on pre-paid packages for Orangetheory, Cyclebar, CorePower Yoga and two massage places, so I’m reluctant to commit to more!

  3. New gym flooring would make me happy for sure. I can definitely talk you into all the reasons that the Peloton is worth it if you’d like. The monthly fee is nothing compared to what you pay at OTF of CP or CB. And the older bike is on sale now. I don’t think I will be ready to go back to a class anywhere for at least a year.

Anything exercise related would make me much happier than jewelry so I totally get where you’re coming from, lol.

I agree with you about the jump in the subscription price. I’ve been told that the increase is due to all the extra data/metrics that you receive during your ride and the ability to take live classes. I’m not sure if that’s 100% accurate though! If you end up wanting to get the bike and need a referral code, let me know.

  5. Marcia says:

Get the mats. We got them when we did our home gym almost 20 years ago and I’ve loved them every day since. I am in the vast minority, but I don’t see the value in a Peloton for myself either. There’s got to be a much cheaper way to replicate the workout. I think I’d prefer a stepmill, honestly. Thanks for linking!

    • Coco says:

I don’t think I’d like the stepmill, but I was thinking I should make myself use the elliptical if I need a day off of running. 😉

  6. Michelle D. says:

I would opt for the gym mats too!

You know how I feel about the Peloton – and Deborah already hit all the points I was going to make. I will admit that the jump in subscription price did give me pause more than the cost of the bike since I know that my husband and youngest son will be using the bike too.

  7. Darlene says:

Wow. Glad you posted this. I didn’t know they raised the membership. That’s expensive. I wasn’t planning on a peleton bike but was considering a spin bike and using the app. Just since the gym is still closed and I want to exercise when the weather is icy and snowy.

I’m still planning on trying for 1000 miles this year…it’ll be close. That’s only 84 miles each month which I don’t often do….but I do more walking than running so it makes sense.

  8. As much as I have loved biking these past two summers, especially in recent months, I really have doubts if I’ll enjoy doing it via a stationary bike (or a Peloton, if I had one). I like being outdoors, no matter the temps, though the outdoor biking will NOT be happening much longer LOL Anyways, the hubby gave me some perfume last Christmas. He’s always done well with perfume before, but this was a fail. I wear it very sparingly, and not very often, because I don’t have the heart to tell him how I REALLY feel about it.

    • Coco says:

Hah! Yeah, it’s hard to break the news when a big gift is off the mark. But my husb is Mr. Picky himself, so …
I’m impressed how much cold weather cycling you’ve done already!

  9. Wow! I had no idea that it was such a hefty fee per month when you get the bike. No thanks, I’ll stay with the app. That I can do. I guess I can forget about a Peloton mil, too, I was thinking about that since mine is so ancient but hadn’t gotten into actual research.

For years my husband bought me cat jewelry. Some was really nice, some wasn’t. I finally told him I would rather not have that as a gift. He seemed to take it ok. I’m so much easier to find gifts for than he is!

    • Coco says:

People say the tread is a good price for a “slat” style tread, but I’d rather buy a tread with a longer track record (LOL) and use the app for classes. I’ve had my Lifefitness treadmill for 20 years now —knock on wood — I’m not confident Peloton has that quality level.

      • I actually want to try a shorter mill this time! Mine is quite long (also over 20 years old), and I suspect our next move might have us downsizing somewhat. Unfortunately the incline no longer works, and I’m too scared of the treadmill dying to have Mr. Judy try to fix it!

  10. Laurie says:

Ha! Only a true fitness freak would want to exchange Tiffany for a heavy duty mat for her home gym. And I mean that in the best possible way! My hubby has nice mats in his gym downstairs and he was very glad he got them. I say go for it! But keep the jewelry too! 🙂

  11. runswithpugs says:

We don’t really have much of a home workout space. The weather is good most of the year, so it hasn’t been a priority for us. Your gym looks great, and I’m sure it will be even better with mats!

I’ve been walking/running over 100 miles a month since the pandemic really got into full swing. It wasn’t a goal I intended, but here we are.

  12. I love my Nordic Track bike, but never understood all the hype over the Pelaton bikes ( unless it is because you can do those Live classes and compete with others, neither which interest me). Perhaps you can get a less expensive bike and then just down load some free apps you can use with it. You might like the newer Nordic Track iFit that now has all the programs downloaded on to it for free.

Now I’d love to see your Tiffany Jewelry!!! I do love my Tiffany pieces, BUT I also have felt like you in the sense that I would have rather seen that $ spent on something practical that I would get more use out of! I get it! Thanks for linking up. Have a good weekend and a happy Halloween!

Interesting debate on the Peloton. I wonder what their popularity will mean for the long term success/future of local spin studios! Though, to be honest, not everyone wants the commitment of their own bike or has the space! I only have space for one, a treadmill OR a bike and the treadmill wins for me 🙂

    • Coco says:

I think the bikes are popular where people don’t have much space — Peloton showcases people who have fit there’s into tiny spaces. Plus, it’s more practical for an apt or condo.

  14. Birchwood Pie says:

For sure you need the gym mats…I mean especially if you’re not getting a Peloton;-) I don’t have a “Plan B” cardio option besides the treadmill. Honestly I can’t see myself ever taking up biking, so I think that if I needed to take time off running I’d put my energy into lifting instead.

    • Coco says:

I used to think that about cycling, but then I started riding with my husband and got hooked. And, I runfess, I made an appointment to visit the Peloton showroom today. ;-0

  15. Cari says:

Happy anniversary! I think I missed that.
I’d be with you on the practical too – I got my first Tiffany last year and while it’s beautiful it’s not at all as used as other things. Even pre WFH I wasn’t a jewelry person.
Wow that the subscription is that much more with a bike. I feel ike with that model it doesn’t end up cheaper than a gym membership the way some exercise machines do. I don’t have the space so it’s not an option, so this winter is going to be interesting
