I know we’re supposed to be adapting to a “new normal,” but I prefer to believe we are going through abnormal times that will come to an end. This August certainly hasn’t been a normal August, so as I head over to the runfessional at Marcia’s Healthy Slice I am making a list of my abnormal August runfessions.
Thanks to Lacey and Miranda for the Fairytales and Fitness Friday Five link up.
Deborah and I will be hosting the September Ultimate Coffee Date over Labor Day weekend. We’ll open the (link-up) doors Friday September 4th, and keep the coffee brewing all weekend.
Abnormal August Runfessions
I runfess that even though I haven’t gone to a studio class since mid-March, I still haven’t unpacked my gym bag. I haven’t even stashed it away somewhere. I have started to raid its contents as I run out of shampoo (etc.), but it still sits out in my bathroom taunting me every day.
Does anyone else still have this bag from Fitbloggin’ 2012?
I runfess that once I logged 100 miles in June I seem to have made 100 miles a monthly mileage goal for no good reason–other than I like round numbers and need some sort of running goal to keep me motivated. I runfess that after my July run streak led to logging over 130 miles in July, I had to make a more conscious effort to log 100 miles in August–but I guess that’s the point of having a goal.
Between taking a few days off and sticking to mostly 3 mile runs I had to throw in a few longer runs to get t0 100. Thankfully the weather cooperated with a few breaks in humidity.
I runfess that while I made it through my July run streak without injury, my right ITB started feeling tight in August. Since I really don’t want to be sidelined during these abnormal times, I decided to switch up my morning routine to do more activation and mobilization work before I run.
I usually start with a 10 min core workout and then do one of Matt Wilper’s 10 min strength for runners classes. They are long enough to wake up my glutes, but not so long to make my legs feel tired. I’ve also continued to be diligent about post-run stretching and foam rolling. I runfess that sometimes it’s annoying to spend as much time preparing to run and recovering from a run as I do running, but one thing these abnormal times have given me is plenty of time to exercise.
This next one has nothing to do with running, but I need to get this off my chest. I confess that my new guilty pleasure is the ridiculous television show Holey Moley.
I usually have no interest in obstacle course competition shows, slapstick humor, or fourth-grade-boy jokes, but the stupid things “commentators” Rob Riggle and Joe Tessitore say make me laugh out loud–and don’t we all need something to laugh about these days?
Do you have a guilty pleasure getting you through these abnormal times?
It’s frustrating to take so much time to prepare for and recover from a run! Hopefully its worth it to be able to continue running. And doing those things will make you a stronger runner overall!
It’s definitely worth it! I was thrilled when my ITB didn’t feel tight yesterday!
That’s great that you are running so many miles. My goal is 84 roughly. But I’ve been walking more and running less.
I’m eating ice cream instead of dinner. Not guilty about it.
Hah! Now that’s a diet I could gt on board with!
I don’t have any running goals right now except to get back to regular running. I have a Peloton cycle goal of 125-150 this month so I have to get a long one in this weekend. I also hope this is just a temporary normal. see you for coffee soon
Does that distance goal align with the PowerZone program? That seems to take precedence
Well my running goals have been modified several times in recent months (due to all the races canceling), and there are NO running goals at the moment as my foot heals. I agree, we need to look at these times as temporarily abnormal and not accept them as a new normal. Hope not mope!
Boo on your IT Band, but glad you seem to have it under control. I haven’t managed the morning activations because I can’t brain, but I too have been diligent on the PT and rolling. Won’t lie, kind of jealous you have space to have a bag out. Mine is hanging in my closet (backpack) and on the floor of the closet (tote) to get it ot of the way of the fridge delivery. I should find my lock at some point.
Our bathroom is ridiculously big — with a jacuzzi tub I use as a giant storage bin. 😛
LoL. When my apartment looks like less of a train wreck I’ll send you pics. Your bathroom is probably larger than my living room/office
My gym bag is tucked away where it always is, but I have raided many things out of it. At this point though, it really should be empty as we cancelled our gym membership. Ha! OMG Fitbloggin 2012! Blast from the past!
Even if I venture into my studio classes, I only need my gym back if I’m showering at work after, and that’s not happenning in 2020.
I have you to thank for steering me in the direction of those strength classes with Matt. I hope your ITB doesn’t become a thing!
Aren’t they great? I think my ITB will behave if I do. 😉
It really is just amazing how much before & after time I take for a run — even a short run many days. I envy those that just go & run, but I also know doing these things will serve me well in the long run (so to speak).
Laughter can be the best medicine, for sure! The dogs are usually good for a few laughs. 🙂 I used to say that my cats made me laugh every day, too, and that was their job.
Yes, Scooby makes me laugh too! Especially when he’s doing his pre-run warm-up of rolling around on his back.
That is funny! Bandit didn’t have a prerun routine. 😊
I feel the same way – I don’t like to call this the new normal. While I know things will never 100% get back to the way they were, I have to believe that they will get better than how it is now.
I haven’t heard of Holey Moley but now I have to check it out!
If you do check it out, you have to promise to not judge me. 😀
I never unpacked my gym bag during the months the rec center was closed either. I do confess to raiding the toiletries, though, when I ran out of stuff at home! 🙂
Now I need to check out Holey Moley! Thanks for the suggestion.
As long as you keep your expectations really low, you might enjoy it! I’m sure your grandkids would laugh along with you.
I had a couple of 100 mile months this year–which made me very happy! I hoped to continue that trend, but I pulled back once it got really hot. I have to respect that my high mileage days are behind me….
Maybe it’s just a season of lower mileage. You seem to surprise yourself with what you can do!
Great job on your miles. I have been logging over 200 miles per month since the Pandemic. My guilty pleasure has been putting puzzles together lately.
Well done on sticking to the PT type exercises before and after running! I think that’s what I should have done when my running volume increased.
Haha, that Holey Moley show is ridiculous! Love it! Thanks for including the link.
Ridiculous is a good word for it. 🙂
