This week I made my third visit to the Tidal Basin hoping to see the cherry blossoms in bloom. My first visit was two weeks ago, when they were just starting to come out. Then I got to enjoy their beauty for miles as I ran the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run when they were at peak bloom. I wanted to take a few more pictures, so I went back this week to bask in their pink glow.
As pretty as pictures of the cherry blossoms can be, they can’t capture the feeling of being surrounded by so many pink blossoms hanging off trees with gorgeously shaped trunks, lining the water of the Tidal Basin and the Potomac River, and framing the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial. They really take my breath away!
Cherry Blossoms In Bloom
Since I was chasing after the cherry blossoms on a weekday, I had to start out earlier than I wanted. While it was light enough to enjoy them, at first it wasn’t light enough for my camera to capture them.
These trees are illuminated by street lights.
It was a cloudy morning, but I still captured some light reflecting off the water–
and a peak of the Washington Monument.
Can you see the Jefferson Memorial?
There weren’t a ton of others there,
but I think this couple was taking engagement photos.
As it got lighter, the color of the blossoms really shone.
That’s the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in the background.
The trees along the river were gorgeous too!
If you have a chance to seen the cherry blossoms in person, it’s definitely worth the hassles of fighting traffic and dodging crowds to do it!
Weekly Wrap
I skipped my usual Friday yoga class to do that cherry blossom run, but the rest of my week I followed my usual routine:
Monday: Strength training
Tuesday: Indoor cycling at CycleBar
Wednesday: Orange Theory Fitness — my first fitness band workout there.
Thursday: Strength training
Friday: 6 mile run + physical therapy
Saturday: Conte’s Hill Ride — I felt really strong this week!
Sunday: 8.5 mi neighborhood run

The Week Ahead
In trying to be brief in my Friday Five – Note To Self post, I created confusion about my upcoming race schedule. This coming weekend I am doing a local favorite race, the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 miler. I have another month to get read for the Denver Colfax Half Marathon which is on May 20th.
I’m linking up with Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap
Were you wearing short sleeves or shoveling snow this weekend?
Really beautiful photos! You did a good job.
I’m not sure I really have a routine. I’m lucky that I can switch things around a lot!
My routine helps me “just do it” when my alarm goes off at 4:40 am — although I’ve been hitting snooze a lot lately.
Your pictures are gorgeous! Kind of wish I had gone back myself. Awesome that you are back to the Contes rides already. I am kind of afraid to go back
Thanks! The fear is worse than the reality – I do hope we ride together since you’re the reason I started going!
How pretty are those cherry blossoms? I love that you went back to take photos of the views on the race course. I have done that too! I don’t take pictures when I’m racing but it’s nice to back and revisit the course!
One leg of the route got pretty close to my office – it was like a partial do-over — minus Hains Point.
Wow! Your pics are breathtaking. I can only imagine how spectacular those blossoms must be IRL. How great they were at their peak for the CB10!
Sunshine makes for much better pictures (like in my header) but they are lovely no matter what.
That must be the race with the best views for sure. You did a great job going back and capturing those pictures. How long do you suppose the Cherry Blossoms are in bloom?
They are in peak bloom for 1-2 weeks, depending on the weather. A late freeze or strong winds can do them in!
I really do love your matching cycling kits and absolutely love all of the cherry blossom photos! Thanks for sharing Coco!!
Thanks! The kits are really soft and silky too. And the blossoms, well, they speak for themselves. 😉
Absolutely stunning photos!
Not as pretty as on race day, but close!
Your pics are beautiful! There were numerous cherry blossoms in bloom when we were there last year at the end of March. Oh, how I’d LOVE to see them again in person!
Thanks. I think the blossoms were out earlier last year. You just never know!
Love your photos – so beautiful! I love that you went back to take pictures.
Thank you – they are so pretty, the hard part was picking a good weather day.
Great photos! I absolutely agree with you on photos vs. being surrounded by them. I think ours died today so I was glad to get some yesterday after the surround sound magic that was the tidal basin.
The weather the past two days has been rough on the blossoms – and the rest of us. I’m glad I saw them on Friday.
Absolutely gorgeous! Breath-taking. Not sure if you get jacaranda trees over there but they are very popular in my part of the world and when they bloom in spring (September) they line the street with stunning purple flowers.
I don’t think I’ve seen them before but I looked them up and they are stunning!
I love all of your photos of the cherry blossoms! While I love the way they look, unfortunately they drive my allergies crazy 🙁
Awesome week of workouts, especially your bike ride on Saturday!
Oh, gosh, I didn’t realize that they were allergenic. We do have a lot of other pollen sources around here that gets to me.
I agree it’s hard to capture the feel of being surrounded by the cherry blossoms in a photo but you did a great job! Those are some beautiful pictures.
Thanks. They are so beautiful!
I’d love to run in the DC area. Your pictures always look so pretty. I’m in the 80s and pushing 90s down here in Florida. Today we’re having cooler weather but it stormed yesterday so it took away some of the humidity for us. That’s always a good thing!
We do have some lovely running areas – but so do you. I don’t envy the humidity you have but you are welcome to our cold rain. 😉
I actually pulled out a maxi dress to wear on Saturday since it was so nice out…paired with Oofos sandals, of course, haha!
The cherry blossoms are so pretty, I haven’t been to DC to admire them in a while!
Love the Fork to Fondo kits!
It was crazy warm but I was so ready for the cold to be over! Boo on today’s dreary weather.
The cherry blossoms are beautiful.
Good luck on your race this weekend
I traveled to Houston this weekend and I expected to be wearing short sleeves. We actually arrived before a cold front, and it was chilly, and humid. That makes it tricky when layering.
Love your pictures! I would love to visit when the Cherry Blossoms are in bloom…it’s on my bucket list.
I really like you Farm to Fork Fondo kit too. I am way over do for a bike ride.
Good luck on your upcoming race.
Your cherry blossom pictures are so pretty! I didn’t make it down there this year to see them…
The GW Parkway Ten-Miler was always my husband’s favorite race. I always enjoyed it, too, but running on concrete for so long always beat up my legs more than most races. Hope you have good weather and a great race!
Oh, how wonderful it is! I imagine the smell that stands around!
They are so pretty! I got to visit one during the season and it was amazing. I would like to come back (maybe Cherry Blossom 10 miler?)
