Earlier this year I was going through a very stressful time. I knew the situation was beyond my control and out of my hands, so for once my first reaction was to be praying instead of worrying.
Even though it was barely summer, my prayers were answered with a Christmas carol–and not even one of my favorite ones. I thought I was losing my mind, but as I ran through the words, I realized that they did have a message for me.
God rest you merry, gentlemen,
Let nothing you dismay,
Remember Christ our Savior
Was born on Christmas day,
To save us all from Satan’s power
When we had gone astray.
Oh! Tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy,
Oh! Tidings of comfort and joy.
The message was simple, but enough to bring me a bit of peace.
Let Nothing You Dismay
No matter what happens, what matters more is that God so loved the world that He sent his son Jesus Christ to walk among us and be with us. No matter what happens, God will be with me to see me through. Knowing that, let nothing you dismay!
At that stressful time, the carol brought me comfort, if not joy. Now, whenever I find myself worrying, I remember that I should let nothing me dismay, but instead put my trust in God.
There are a lot of unique versions of this carol on YouTube,
but this is a classic arrangement.
This may not be what you were expecting for a Wednesday Word post, but I’ve been wanting to share this for a while, and “stressful” gave me the perfect opportunity. That’s one thing I really love about this link up – it’s always open to a wide range of interpretations.

How do you cope when things get stressful?
I always love reading everyone’s take on Wednesday word!
Creative take on the Wednesday Word-it’s wonderful that your faith helps you so much with stressful times in your life. Happy Holidays!
I’m not a praying person–but I suppose that my runs bring me peace because it really is time for reflection and meditation!
Great interpretation of
I was told years ago I believe in a seminar, that your body can’t physically feel stress while singing (laughing or eating — but let’s not go there). It’s probably not true, but my point is — a song, especially one with a spiritual message, can calm your soul. Comfort and Joy!
Oh, that’s interesting! Even singing solemn songs/hymns is soothing.
It is wonderful that your faith brings you such comfort.
LOVE this!
It’s a lovely message and one I usually think about this time of year. Too bad we don’t get to hear those old carols often enough. Sometimes, I think they’re too familiar – we don’t even think about what the words mean.
This wasn’t my favorite Christmas song either, until I started to get a little older. The message is increasingly important though, as the world gets more and more hectic and stressful! Thank you for sharing your faith!
I love that this week’s Wednesday Word gave you an opportunity to share this story; and that a Christmas carol brought you comfort… in the middle of the summer.
Thanks for linking up!
