Book Review For Dark Places By Gillian Flynn

I finished this book before the end of December, but the month (year!) got away from me before I could write a book review for Dark Places by Gillian Flynn.

From the synopsis on Amazon:

Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in “The Satan Sacrifice” of Kinnakee, Kansas.” She survived—and famously testified that her fifteen-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, [Libby is prompted to ask questions and search for answers] …. and Libby finds herself right back where she started—on the run from a killer.

You may have read Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, which actually was her third book after Sharp Objects (which I haven’t read yet) and Dark Places. If you liked Gone Girl, you probably will like Dark Placesit is just as gripping and engrossing a page-turner.

The chapters alternate perspectives from different characters and different times (around the time of the murders and present day), but rather than being confusing, I found that this approach helped the story unfold well, even as it kept me guessing until the end.

There are underlying questions about how much you can know and trust even your closest family members, which were a bit creepy to ponder with a house full of family/guests over the holidays. 😉

If you are looking for a whodunit to curl up with over a cold weekend, you might want to put Dark Places on your reading list.

What was your favorite book of 2014?

What are you reading now?

I read Gone Girl.. I’ll have to check this one out. I’m currently reading “I thought it was just me (but it isn’t) by Brene Brown. It’s about the women and shame. Pretty interesting stuff.

I’m currently reading Lisa Jackson’s The Morning After.

  5. So I’m currently making attempt #2 to read Les Mis…but your review reminds me that I should probably just watch the movie at this point. Loved Gone Girl! I wondered how her other books compared…

  6. I’m not normally into dark fiction but I actually loved all three of her books and I Just found out they are making a movie out of two of them! I will definitely be seeing. My favorite book of 2013 was probably “The Little Way of Ruthie Leming” by Rod Dreher.

Oohh… I’m intrigued. I am currrntly reading America’s Women by Gail Collins. It is so fascinating and probably the best nonfiction I’ve ever read. So hard to put down!

  8. Rebecca says:

I didn’t read nearly as much as I wanted to in 2013 and I hope to change that this year. I started Orange is the New Black, so far so good!
I’ve never heard of Gillian Flynn but I’ll check her out!

I liked Orange is the New Black (and I’ve never seen the tv show!). I never read as much as I’d like to, but I am reading more than I used to before I started reading on my iPhone, 😉

  10. Tamara says:

I loved this book too Coco. Sharp Objects is also good and even a bit eerier when it comes to the whole family dynamics/trust thing. Gillian Flynn is an excellent writer. Keeps me turning ’til the very last page!

Do you do book reviews regularly? I really enjoy hearing what others have to say about their recent reads!
