Where I Run–The Mount Vernon Trail

Today I’m linking up with Tuesdays On the Run to write about where I run. I am lucky to have many lovely running routes to chose from, and my favorites are along different sections of the Mount Vernon Trail.

Seen On My Run

The trail follows the Potomac River from Mount Vernon Estate (George Washington’s home on the Potomac River) to Theodore Roosevelt Island (across from Georgetown). It cuts through Old Town (Alexandria) and Ronald Reagan National Airport. While it’s never too far from the George Washington Parkway, many segments make you forget you are so close to the city.

I usually run at the southern end of the trail, between Old Town and Mt. Vernon. The view at Belle Haven Park at sunrise is always spectacular.

Sometimes I head across the river over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, which you can barely see in the distance. It’s over a mile long, and has some steep switch-backs that take you over the highway on the Maryland side.

Some areas along the trail are prone to flooding, but that just brings the ducks out.

In the summer, I enjoy the shady trees, and in the fall they wow me with their colors.

Even in the winter, they look spectacular.

Sights like this along the Mount Vernon Trail make getting up at o’dark-thirty worth it!

Where do you run?

How often do you take time to stop and take pictures?

Gorgeous scenery'! I'm trying to figure out where I will run now in a new town… definitely missing my tried and true paths in Houston!

I love paths that are fun in every season. You never get tired of checking out the scenery that way!

  4. Beautiful! I do this too, take pictures in each season! I love the change of seasons while running!

What beautiful running spots! I just recently started taking pics on my long runs because I found a comfortable way to carry my phone.

You have a great spot to run 🙂 I always wish I had more trails or paths but I just run in the neighborhood.

  12. I ran on the Mount Vernon trail when visiting my brother in Alexandria. I really enjoyed it! Those photos during the fall are so pretty! And I love ducks 🙂

  13. I usually only take pictures when I by myself, & even then not so often. Sometime I just want to get it done. Or it’s too cold, or too hot.

    Or I’m with a group & I can’t stop.

And I never take pictures when I’m racing!

  14. You have very nice places to run. I usually never take my phone with me on a running route I normally do that is close to home.

Oh yeah, I think I’d drive there to run on the weekend! Beautiful.

  16. Very beautiful running trails. Yes, it’s quite amazing the beauty you see in the early morning hours.
