Last weekend I decided to run along the National Mall, to the U.S. Capitol. As I approached the Capitol, I decided to keep running to the U.S. Supreme Court, to take a picture for my upcoming book review of My Beloved World by Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor.
As I ran past the Capitol, I thought: This is why they call it Capitol Hill!
OK, maybe it doesn’t look so impressive on this graph, but that’s a steep hill!
I wove through a group of high school students on a field trip to get
a picture of the Capitol from a side I don’t see very often.
On my way back, I took a few detours to check out the sites where events were being set up for later –the National Asian Heritage Festival on Constitution Avenue, graduation for George Washington University on the Mall, and the Dragon Boat Festival at the Georgetown waterfront. Despite these random detours and a few other photo stops, my split times were amazingly even after that first warm-up mile.
Do you ever take random detours to satisfy your curiosity when you’re out walking or running?
always. I detour and amble and walk walk walk to keep it interesting or I STOP.
and to my eyes? THAT LOOKS PRETTY D*MN IMPRESSIVE.
When I am out running with our run club, a few of us are always looking for shiny things to distract us. We run on the CCT lot and always have fun looking at the wildlife – makes the run more fun!
running 'round Capitol Hill must be pretty awesome. I'd take that run!
another reason you need to plan a greedy family field trip!
How fun, I ran the Marine Corps Marathon last October, and visited D.C for my first time! I am a huge detour taker when I am running! Especially if I am up in the mountains, I just can't resist to see whats around the next corner, or over the next hill:)
Detour, explore in all aspects of life 🙂
I would love to run around Capitol Hill. I've run all the streets and detours within about 10 miles of me – I should start driving to new running destinations!!
nice! I haven't been to DC and would love to run there. I would totally make random stops. I don't do that much here anymore because of the time issue I have, but when I'm travelling, yes!
