What I Ate Wednesday (Vitalicious Review)

My experience with Vitalicious prodcuts has been hit and miss. I love the Vitalicious Deep Chocolate Vitamuffins® and keep them on hand for a satisfying chocolatey snack.

On the other hand, I even warned my husband away from the Vitalicious Egg’N’Cheese VitaSandwich.®

(I share better ideas for on-the go breakfast sandwiches here.)

I love cornbread but don’t always have time to bake up a batch of these classic Jiffy® favorites.

So I was looking forward to trying the Vitalicious Golden Corn VitaTops, which can be quickly warmed/toasted in the microwave or toaster oven. But when I served them with dinner, I could barely finish mine because it was so sweet. Now, I know that some people like their cornbread on the sweet side, and I am a big fan of the cornbread at Hard Times Cafe, which is reminiscent of pound cake with its dense moistness, but these went beyond even that.

When I got the package out of the freezer and read the nutrition label, I was shocked.

I promise that I usually read the label before I buy a new product, but it never crossed my mind that the first two ingredients of a “muffin” would be water and sugar! I could not believe that there is more sugar than corn flour in this product. Ugh.

Despite this experience, I was intrigued when I saw Vitalicious VitaPizza® in my grocery store, and became interested enough to pick up a box to read the ingredient list when they went on sale. The list was long, but at least the ingredients seemed to be in the right order!

To increase the odds that it would taste good, I heated it up in the toaster oven, even though there are microwave directions.

It looked pretty good, and generally tasted OK, but there was an overpowering spice in the “pepperoni” bits that made the whole thing just taste spicy. I still have a plain cheese variety to try–maybe I will like that one better.

Have you tried any new products lately?

    as she loves them.

Im not yet smitten—but have caved and bought some high fiber ones at times 🙂

  2. I like making my own pizzas from scratch 🙂

  3. Laura says:

I generally don't eat frozen food, but I was curious about that pizza! Did you see Daiya has a frozen pizza now too?

  4. I love how they put ORGANIC Sugar – LOL – You KNOW they will convince people that it's a healthy product because it says ORGANIC!! lol

  5. Carrie says:

I'm with Gigi. Like putting "organic" next to the sugar makes it okay to have it as the 2nd ingredient on a supposedly 'healthy' muffin. Ugh.

  6. I love Vitalicious, although since I started my quest to eat clean and cut sugar out of my diet, they’re no longer a sweet treat I can have!

Since they stopped making those Vitamuffins, I stopped buying them. Somehow the muffin tops they still sell aren’t quite the same!
