My Tried And True Running Shoes

It’s been over 6 months since I’ve added to my Mizuno collection.

Tried And True Running Shoes (Mizuno)
It’s high time for a fresh pair.

I thought about trying another brand, but (a) the guy at the running store was more interested in watching the Caps game than explaining comparable options and (b) now that my ITB/piriformis issue is back, I don’t want to risk the new twinges that might come with a new style of shoe.

When you need new running shoes, do you stick with the same brand/style or do you like to mix things up?

  1. I go to a store where they watch you walk and bring you shoes to try that would be good for you. I have ended up with the same ones for years, although I've tried on some others.

I used to stick to the same brand and just go with the updated models (I had Asics for most of my time in high-school and college, then switches to New Balance for grad school, and had those for years!)… but then in 2006 I got actually fitted for shoes and got some Sauconys (I defined them as "running on clouds" back then!). I got an extra pair of them at an Expo and they just weren't the same (it was the previous model of the ones I had). Last year when I needed new shoes, I went to a local store to get fitted; sticking to the Sauconys, I tried them first but they were not comfortable at all for me, so I switched to Brooks (again, running on clouds!)… I probably will be getting another pair soon, and if they still have that brand available, I'll get it online (probably cheaper), but if not, I'll just go back to the store and get fitted for shoes again… and if something from a different brand comes up, I won't think about it too much! 🙂

I used to change shoe styles. Or at least try different styles. But I found I was returning the new shoes because of some issue – either a pinch or an ache somewhere. I'll admit that I'm just chicken now.

What type of Mizunos do you wear? Did you consider that they could be contributing to your ITB/piriformis issue?

There's always a question about the shoes, but I don't think they are the culprit here. I was OK when I got them and for a while afterwards.

  4. First, if the salesperson wasn't giving me the attention I needed, I'd walk out. There are so many great run shops in Madison, if one gave poor service I'd hit up the next one.
I'm always pretty hesitant to try different shoes. Even within the same brand.. I know I can do Mizuno Wave Riders.. Very recently I tried Mizuno Wave Enigmas and ended up rolling my ankle in them, not the shoe's fault, but I couldn't run in those shoes after that.
If you want to try a different brand maybe find some on super clearance? I found some Ascis last summer for $50, they worked to rotate in.

The only reason I went to this store was the 20% off coupon. He certainly didn't give me a reason to go back!

Which store did that happen at?! If it's local you should tweet them this post!
I just stopped running in Inspires. I have a new shoes blog post up today too.

Asics fit my feet best, yet I am a very bad lady. I wear a pair of running sneaks until they pretty much fall apart. Please slap me now.
