Fair Weather Runner

I often get into Twitter fights with @RunningBecause over my decisions not to run in crappy weather.  He makes good points. If you are training for a race, you should train for race conditions. Since you never know what the weather will be on race day, you should train in all sorts of weather, so you will be ready for whatever the day brings.

But I don’t do that.

Don’t get me wrong. I will run in the cold. I have great running gear and know that I will be comfortable in my layers, hat, and gloves before I finish the first mile.

Rain is a different issue. I wear glasses, and while a brimmed hat can work when it is just drizzling, steady rain can leave me blind.

We’ve also gotten into it over wind. I don’t mind a windchill, but gale force winds will keep me inside.

We’ve probably argued about heat and humidity too. I just don’t do well in either. I have a treadmill in an air-conditioned basement, so I don’t have to.

I run because I enjoy running, so why should I force myself to run in weather that will make me miserable? Running is something I do for myself, and often is the best hour of a stressful day. I don’t want to ruin that by making myself go out in the cold/rain/wind/heat if I don’t want to.  I am not going to turn running into a chore that I have to suffer through.

Life is too short, endorphins are too precious, and I don’t care about my finish times that much!

Will rain, snow, sleet or hail keep you from your run?

    …and most EVERYTHING ELSE.

  2. Personally, I am glad that I trained in all weather for my 1/2 marathon. It turned out to be a freak snow/ice storm the day before the race. Enjoy running and do what makes you happy!

My first half this weekend started with 30 mph winds and pouring rain (sideways at that). Loved it! Felt so hardcore! Haha!

*sits back, grabs a bowl of popcorn, waits for David to come and lecture you*

No need to lecture – I only state my opinions that I think many people will agree with. I see and understand all your points, and I'll admit that I've moved runs around to avoid some conditions. That said, how do you know you'll be miserable if you always avoid it? Rain, snow, wind, cold, hot … it can all be fun if you stop thinking about it so much. If it's cold and windy and rainy on March 17, and you're miserable, some of that is your own undoing.

Wont keep me from a run, but will keep me indoors… I am not a huge winter outdoor running fan at all now

    cheers

  7. Loved that "Life is too short, endorphins are too precious and I don't care about my finishing times that much!" You should put that in a sticker on your TM.

I don't have weather extremes, but I hate wind and wouldn't run in wind unless I had no choice (and I can't really think when that situation would arise – I'd go inside for sure).

    I'm definitely a fair weather runner! 🙂

I come from both sides on this. Living in New England it is
    A. impossible to avoid yucky weather most times
    B. tough to predict any kind of conditions on race day
That being said, I am in between on this because I do run in adverse condition for long runs if I must, I have run in snow, cold, rain etc, and I have raced in all of those conditions. But I am a runner who is competitive with my own self and races more frequently to go for pr's so I want to be well prepared for a race in any condition. But there are times when I will move a run to avoid crappy weather, if I just think I have had enough. I also feel if you are just running more to have fun and can stand a treadmill long run then go for it. I am just not a huge fan of the treadmill 😉 I think as long as you have acclimated to the weather before a race it is not necessary to run in extreme conditions for every single run.

  10. Whatever! I so do what you love!
    But then I'm a reluctant exerciser 🙂
So for me, it's all about loving it so I'll DO it!

  11. I just don't like when I have to run in slush, rain, or snow! It makes me dislike running and not enjoy the actual activity. I workout for fun and if it's crappy out, I just don't go!

Exactly. While you can learn to love — or at least not hate — certain weather conditions and enjoy the pride of getting it done, if that's not where you are, "sucking it up" is not worth losing the love of running over.
