How To Become A Morning Person

Sometime between my college days and today, I became a morning person. I used to be like my daughter, hanging around the house until it was time to go out with friends at 10 or 11 p.m. I used to sleep until noon on the weekends and not think I was being particularly lazy. But that’s not my life anymore. So, how did I become a morning person?

The birth of my daughter brought the first major change in my sleep schedule. No matter how late we stayed up, she always was up early the next morning. A 6:00 am wake-up call from the baby-monitor was a blessing. If it got to be 7:00 am, I’d bolt out of bed in a panic, and rush into her room to make sure she was still breathing. Back then, though, I never chose to be a morning person.

I started getting up earlier than my kids and/or work schedule required about 10 years ago, when I made exercise a part of my daily routine. I preferred to keep my evenings free for family time, and knew that my workout was much more likely to happen if I did it first thing, before anything else could interfere. At first I set my alarm reluctantly, but eventually I started to look forward to my early morning “me” time.

Still, there are times when I would like to laze in bed, especially when my husband is in a snuggly mood. There is something decadent about relaxing in bed and getting up at a leisurely pace.Daydreaming about my ideal morning made me realize that I would enjoy a “Groundhog Day” of just mornings.

  • On one morning, I could get up early and go out for a glorious sunrise run.
  • On another morning, I could stay in bed until the sun made it too bright to doze any longer.
  • On another morning, I could go for a walk with my husband, come back for coffee, and then go out for brunch with friends.
  • On another morning, I could sit on my patio in my PJs, sipping coffee and listening to the songbirds.

I think I am longing for these mornings because my morning routine is about to be interrupted. Between my son’s weekend lacrosse tournaments and a few business trips, I am not going to have much say in how I spend my mornings for a while, and I’m missing “my” time already.

Are you a morning person?

What is your favorite way to spend a morning?

"On another morning, I could sit on my patio in my PJs, sipping coffee and listening to the songbirds." I like this one minus the bird part. I think I'm a closet morning person, I won't admit it, but I am a morning person.

I'm both morning and night! I go to bed between midnight-1:30 a.m. and get up 530ish every morning.
I love mornings, its quiet and peaceful.
Spend my morning in prayer, meditation, running, and getting my first workout in for the day.
I can get more accomplished in the morning before most people wake up! it's a wonderful thing 🙂

I'm not much of a morning person but I do prefer to get my workout done before work or errands on the weekend. Makes the day so much better

Definitely agree with you that the best way to get the workouts done is to have them in the morning – I find there are many excuses in the evening (most of them valid, of course, as I love socializing)… My problem these days is that unless I get up at 5:45 am, I can't get a workout in the morning… and I have a very hard time going to bed before 10 pm… so I'm in a constant state of sleep deprivation… which makes it so much harder. I'm hoping now that I'm getting out of being sick (bronchitis), I can get back in the running wagon again (after all, until last week, I was running 3-times a week!)… the half marathon will be here before I know it!!!

I do think I'm a morning person… I certainly can get more accomplished in the morning when it's peaceful and quiet! 🙂

  6. I'm like you – I was never a morning person until I had kids. Now, I happily get up at 5:45 just to have some 'me' time. Just me and my coffee and my computer for a while. My hubby leaves for work then so I don't use the time to workout – although I'd love to have a treadmill at home and then that would absolutely be my workout time. Thankfully I have the luxury of working out after they go to school. My class schedule is increasing this fall, so that's gonna change.

I am a morning person by force. I love my sleep. I have one disabled son who has to be up for his school program. Because I usually go to bed rather late 12:00 ish . I want to sleep till 12 but have to be up at 6:30 is to be in fireman mode to get him ready. I'd love to get up at my 5:00 am alarm to get my workouts in and out of the way, but my brain and body will not cooperate. Only if I have to really be somewhere at that time that I am obedient.

Like your photos. They really painted a picture and great story telling.

The trick is getting your body to get up before your brain is awake enough to protest. 🙂

Thanks for the comment on the pics. I was amusing myself with clip art!

  8. I've always been a morning person. When I was in grad school, I'd go to bed early and get up very early to study. Friends would call me at 10pm with questions about an exam and I would be asleep! (I always offered to call them at 4:30am when I was studying!)

My ideal morning would be to get up and run or workout, then enjoy a leisurely coffee on the back porch. I'll have that some day. There is nothing leisurely about mornings when my 4 year old is awake (and she's a morning person too!).

before i had kids I was a morning person. Nothing could beat a 6am run, no matter what time i went to bed! These days however, my morning workouts are gone (thanks to kids not sleeping and hubby traveling) and I really miss it! Some day I will have my mornings back (right?!) 🙂

For me I am not a morning person, but I get up by 7:00 usually on weekends. I like to sit and have my coffee, watch the news and read my blogs. I don't like exercising first thing in the mornings, weekends I do around 9 or 10 AM by then I am ready.

  11. Oh yes! My favorite thing… to be online, of course:) Checking in on my "diet" forum, reading blogs, responding to comments on mine. Enjoying the quiet before anyone else wakes up.
