Give A Good Luck Box To Your Favorite Runner

I can’t believe my first race of 2016 is less than two weeks away! It would be a lie to say I haven’t been training for it–I’ve been doing hill repeats on the treadmill and choosing hilly routes for my weekend long runs–but I don’t feel like I am in shape to set a PR. Honestly, I’m not in the mood to push myself that hard for that long, but maybe I’ll find some race day mojo between now and then.

Good Luck Box
Speaking of race day mojo, have you heard of the Good Luck Box? It’s a gift box full of running-related goodies that you can send to a friend or family member (or even yourself!) for support and encouragement before a race. The people behind the Good Luck Box sent me and the other members of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run social media team a preview of the custom Good Luck Box for the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run, and it is amazing!  Continue reading

Spectacular Sunrise At Dyke Marsh

You know I love sunrises. It’s the one thing I suffer from FOMO over. Recently we’ve had some gorgeous sunrises, but since I usually run at o’dark-thirty, I haven’t been able to get any pictures. One morning a few weeks ago the view of the sunrise on my way to work was so fantastic, I almost kept driving in the wrong direction just to keep soaking it in. Finally last week my timing was right to capture some spectacular sunrise pictures on my run. I’m going to share them in order, so you can enjoy the sunrise with me.

Spectacular Sunrise - Belle Haven Marina

My photo shoot started at Belle Haven Marina.
I don’t usually run down here–
it’s just a gravel parking lot leading to the boat slips–
but I was enticed by better views of the sunrise.

If It Ain’t Broke

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is a great American adage that applies to so many areas of life, but is particularly applicable to running, and especially applicable to running shoes. While it can be tempting to try the latest running shoes that your friends are raving about, it is important to wear a shoe that is right for you. After years of trying different brands and styles I have learned that Mizuno running shoes are right for me–especially the ones that provide some stability.

These new shoes were bought with my own hard-earned money
–although I did score a 25% discount from RoadRunner Sports. 😉

Anatomy Of A Treadmill Workout

Last year I barely used my treadmill at all. I ran in the rain and the cold, and almost always had the company of other bad-ass mother runners from my Moms Run This Town group. This year, I find myself opting for a treadmill workout more frequently. There are still plenty of bad-ass mother runners braving the weather, but I am not one of them. Maybe I’m whimpier this year. Maybe I’m getting older and wiser. Maybe I’m just not in the mood to figure out which layers I need to fend off frostbite without getting over-heated.

Anatomy Of A Treadmill Workout

While the treadmill keeps me safe from the elements, I am more worried about getting injured doing a treadmill workout than I am doing hill repeats in my neighborhood or doing speed workouts at the track. When I’m running outside, my body controls my pace and my cadence, but on the treadmill my pace is forced into a constant rhythm by the treadmill settings. Because of that, I think it’s even more important to warm-up and cool-down properly when doing a treadmill workout. This is the routine that has been working for me.  Continue reading

The Gospel According To Running

Instead of writing another valentine to running, I’m expressing my thoughts in a poem of sorts. I can’t take all the credit for the writing, but since the Bible is in the public domain, I don’t have to worry about being sued for copyright infringement.

The Gospel According To Running
With apologies to St. Paul, and anyone else whom this might offend ….

The Gospel According To Running

Running is patient (although runners are not),
but Running is not kind.

If you are envious or boastful or arrogant or rude,
Running will put you in your place with a bad run.

Runners may insist on their own way,
and become irritable and resentful when they can’t run, but
Running does not rejoice in race bandit wrongdoings,
but rejoices in moments of truth.

Running bears all stressful things away,
makes you believe all things are possible,

keeps you hoping for all personal record things,
and has you enduring all weather things.

May my love of running never end.

Will you be celebrating your love of running this weekend?
