What Went Wrong?

After two pain-free runs Monday and Wednesday, my short run Friday annoyed my Achilles. Not only that, the area above my left knee feels wonky–not when I run, but if I step the wrong way and sometimes going up or down the stairs. Argh!

bitmoji question mark

Sorry, Jenny, but with every new twinge
I wondered if what you have is catching. πŸ˜‰

I’d like to say I canceled my “long” run on Saturday, but I honestly felt great when I started out for a 2 mile out-and-back with Scooby, and let the fall weather lure me into 6 miles. Hopefully I won’t be regretting that by the time this post publishes.

What Went Wrong?

Believe me, I did not forget my plan for carefully ramping up my running. I didn’t run every day. I chose mostly flat routes. I warmed up. I stretched. So what went wrong?

As for my Achilles, the only thing I can think of is that I ran a bit harder/faster on Friday. I ran my flattest loop, but I listened to a Peloton intervals run and got caught up in the cueing. It didn’t bother me when I ran, and only nagged slightly afterwards, but the nagging lingered longer than it has been. ~sigh~

As for my knee, there could be one or more culprits. First, there’s that 65 mile bike ride we did last weekend. The hills weren’t hard, but we kept a solid pace, and it was enough to aggravate my husband’s knee issues.

Lifeline Metric Century 2021

I promised you lederhosen!
This is the prettiest part of the route, along the Chesapeake Bay.

I’ve also been doing a lot of lower body strength workouts. Maybe I need to cut back on curtsey lunges.

I had my last scheduled podiatrist appointment on Friday, and he prescribed another round of miloxicam to see if that will knock out the rest of the inflammation. Of course, he also told me to pay attention to how I feel during and after running, and cut back if needed. Ahem. Depending on how things go, I may do another round of shockwave treatments in a month or so.

This week I have my first business trip to Chicago since this time in 2019, and I am looking forward to running along the lake front. It’s flat, and I won’t have time to run very long, so hopefully my Achilles–and knee–won’t make me regret it.

Weekly Run Down

Work was in overdrive again, including a few nights when I didn’t log off until 9 pm. I also took the huge step of bringing all my equipment back into the office–after ordering monitors and a keyboard to set up at home. I still need to force myself to go in, but Friday they were offering flu shots and Georgetown Cupcakes, so that got me to show up. πŸ˜‰

Workout-wise, I tried to take it easy after our metric century ride. I didn’t feel sore or anything, but I figured my legs deserved a break after 4 hours of solid riding. Plus, we’ve got another Farm To Fork Fondo weekend in two weeks, so I need them to be ready for the hills of Shenandoah, which could be worse than the hills of Lancaster County.

Monday: 3.3 Scooby Miles + Core + Upper Body

peloton workoutsTuesday: Core + 30 min Ride + ALW + 30 min Tread Bootcamp
I started the day with a “low impact” Peloton ride, which generally means no out-of-the-saddle riding, but with Matt Wilpers also usually means drills–and this class was all drills–focus on using one leg at a time, focus on maintaining a steady pace at different resistance, etc. Then in the afternoon I was able to step away from work long enough to join Kim for her 150th Tread Bootcamp!

Lucky for me, it wasn’t one of Jess Sims’ hardest!

Wednesday:  Core + 5.6 Scooby Miles
I need to relearn my medium distance loops, because I was aiming for 5-ish miles, and got closer to 6 than I intended. As you can tell from my tank top, the weather was summerlike–including humidity I thought we were done with.

Thursday: Core + Lower Body + 30 min Peloton Ride + ALW
For my second “easy” ride of the week I did Hanna Franksen’s carnival ride. I can’t believe she wore this costume the whole time. The music was as spicy as you’d expect–so fun!

Friday: Core + 4 Scooby Miles + Upper Body
The run that seems to have set me back. It felt so good at the time.

Saturday: Core + 6.1 Scooby Miles
I started out planning on 2 miles, but honestly my Achilles (and knee) felt fine–no twinges at all. I decided to head further on for a 4 mile loop, and then listened to the devil on my shoulder and went ahead with my original (pre-Friday) plan of 6 miles.

Sunday: Pilates + Full Body Strength
I hit the Peloton badge jackpot on my Pilates workout, with badges for taking a class from the Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage and Pelothon collections, a class taken by 10 other “friends,” and reaching the bronze level (10 days) of the monthly activity challenge.

… and a 25 mile bike ride with only 4 real hills.

Thanks to Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down link up.

Have you bought any pumpkins yet?

  1. I am sorry to hear that you are having sensation again. How is it feeling today? Mine seems fine now and now I’m struggling with on again/off again (mostly off, thankfully) tendonitis on the top of the other foot. At least that’s my self dx. It’s always something. πŸ™

I can’t believe you are doing all the business trips again! I’ve been to Chicago a few times, as my SIL lived there for a while, but it was before I started to run. I would’ve loved to run (or even walk) at the lakefront, but when you’re visiting family . . . We must’ve stayed in a hotel at the time but I can’t even remember that!

  2. jenny says:

Hahahahaha…. Yes, I definitely think you may have “Jenny-itis.” You even gave it the “Jenny” treatment- something hurts, so I’ll run farther today! In all seriousness, I hope everything is okay- the fact that you completed your run on Saturday and felt good is a good sign. Pain/discomfort doesn’t have to mean something terrible- sometimes it’s just your body reminding you to pay attention. Good luck with it all!

  3. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

Oh no on the Achilles! I hope things calm down. When you mentioned your century ride as being a possible factor with your knee issue, that reminded me of my stationary biking (which was part of my fitness this week). My stationary bike has the foot harness/cages, and using those has my foot “straight,” but it almost always tweaks my right knee (another reason I’ll never give into the pressure of clipping-in with my road bikes LOL). I almost always notice my knee feeling weird if I ride for longer than 45ish minutes inside. Anyways, curtsy lunges also don’t play nice with my knees LOL Glad you could join Kim for her monumental bootcamp ride!

    • Coco says:

Interesting thoughts on clipping in. I think for me it’s more to do with hours in the saddle than position, but it’s worth checking out.

  4. Sorry to hear that your achilles and your knee are feeling sore again. Definitely won’t hurt to back off for the next 2 weeks until your farm to fork ride. Have a great time in Chicago I am headed there in a few weeks

  5. Ugh I’m sorry to hear about both your Achilles and knee. With the Fondo on the horizon, it sounds like scaling back a little wouldn’t be a bad plan. Yeah I know, easier said than done, right? πŸ˜‰

  6. therightfits says:

Ugh, so sorry to hear that the Achilles isn’t behaving. I was so hopeful the shockwave was the miracle cure! Though they did tell me that is continues to heal/improve post-treatment for up to 6 months.

Scooby is just the sweetest. What a good pup!

I’m going to be forcing myself to go into the office soon and dreading it…

    • Coco says:

Honestly, Thursday I would have told you it was 90% better. My Dr. did say I could still see improvement from the shockwave β€” fingers crossed.

  7. I’m so bummed to hear that you’re experiencing Achilles pain again. πŸ™

I got my flu shot on Monday, but Giant Pharmacy didn’t offer me a Georgetown cupcake. What’s that all about? πŸ˜‰

  8. Wendy says:

So sorry about the setback in your recovery. Maybe a day or two of rest will help? I may have pushed myself a little too much today. I’m hoping my time in the water tomorrow will help everything feel better.

  9. Marcia says:

What a bummer your achilles is acting up. I think I’d suspect the long bike ride as well. I hope it calms down for you soon.

  10. Ugh your poor tendon!! Hopefully running the 6 miles and feeling good means your body will continue to feel good!

  11. Catrina says:

The Achilles Diva strikes again…. oh, dear, Coco!
I am sure a bit of rest will do the trick – fortunately, you know how to deal with it.

Since my Achilles episode in 2019 (I missed a whole year of running) I am very paranoid about it. I did a race on Saturday and I felt my Achilles acting up yesterday Sunday. So I foam rolled and rested. As long as it gets attention, it is happy. Just like a diva…

Love the Lederhosen! Looking forwar to your next Farm to Fork Fondo.

  12. Oh no Coco – sorry to hear about both the Achilles and the knee but hoping it is just a minor glitch in the recovery road and you’ll feel fine this week! Just so frustrating when something doesn’t feel or work as it should!

  13. Sorry the pains are reappearing! Hopefully it’s just a little glitch. It was a warm week around here too. My tank tops aren’t going away soon!

  14. kookyrunner says:

Thanks for joining me for that bootcamp class – it was definitely a more gentle than I expected which made me happy, lol.

So sorry that you experienced some pains during your run this week. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it was just a fluke and a one time thing because you’re been doing so well these past few weeks!

  15. runswithpugs says:

Flu shots AND cupcakes???!!! That’s the dream right there!

We bought one pumpkin for display, and three pie pumpkins. A is actually making his own pumpkin puree for pies later in the season. We will have to wait to carve the big gourd, because they rot so fast down here.

  16. Darlene says:

Ok not happy reading about your achilles. Hopefully it was a fluke and really is getting better.

My foot that hurt forever and then stopped hurting and then all of a sudden hurt during my half. Now it’s fine. What gives??

  17. Cari says:

mm flu shots and cupcakes! I’d go in too
Boo on the kneechilles issues. I’ve had to cut back on the lunges to keep the ITB happy. It’s not ideal, but it’s a tradeoff I’m willing to make for now
