Moving Through A Fall Fog

I know weather can affect my mood, but sometimes the weather does a really good job of reflecting my mood. This week’s foggy mornings mirrored my Groundhog Day feelings. I often woke up unsure of what day it was, and then found myself wondering if it even mattered. I felt like I was moving through a fall fog even after the sun came out.

Running Through A Fall Fog

I’m not complaining about the weather. Considering it was the third week of October, the weather was mild–in the low 60s in the morning and reaching the mid- to upper-70s in the afternoon. But it was also humid, and I guess that’s what caused the fall morning fog. When I first stepped out the door, the cool mist felt good on my skin, but the problem came a few minutes later, when my glasses were coated with a thin layer of dew drops, essentially blinding me!

Some mornings the Weather Channel App warned me, with a forecast like this:

Weather Channel App Foggy Forecast

But other days I didn’t realize how bad it was until I was 1/2 mile into my run.

On Thursday I was planning a 4-ish mile run, but after having to stop to wipe off my glasses several times, I headed home and hopped on the treadmill. The frequent stops were annoying, and in between stops I was afraid of running into something or tripping on an uneven patch of sidewalk. I need to learn to not even try to run in those conditions!

Living In A Fall Fog

As for Ground Hog day, after seven months of mostly staying at home. the days and weeks–and months–really are blurring together. My life in the Before Times wasn’t very exciting, but it did have some variety. Each weekday I would take a class at a different fitness studio, depending on when my favorite instructor was teaching. On weekends, we would at least go out to dinner. Now, the only variety in my weekdays is which Peloton workouts I do. While we do get take-out from different places, we still are eating all our meals at home.

Wednesday Friday Meme

I’m not going to outdo Kim’s memes,
but I lived this one this week!

The sameness is wearing on me, but what’s making it hard now is the feeling (knowledge?) that there’s no end in sight. My husband is still very cautious–and why shouldn’t he be? The virus has not disappeared. Our daily new case levels are back to where they were in mid-June, but still at more than 10 new cases per 100,000 people per day in my little city. Regardless of the numbers, I don’t think he’ll feel comfortable until a vaccine has been fully deployed, so we will be staying safer at home for a while.

Weekly Run Down

With the fog cramping my running style, I did some harder strength classes this week, and have the DOMS to prove it! I also continued to check off workouts for the Coretober challange.

CoretoberI do like seeing that progress.

Monday: 3.15 Scooby Miles + 50 min Peloton Strength

Scooby in the dark

Scooby is not as willing to pose in the dark!

Tuesday: 4.5 Scooby Miles + 20 min Peloton Strength
My first foggy run of the week, and the reflective top I wore wasn’t very effective for wiping off my glasses!

With Scooby and headlamp

Wednesday: 1 mile walk + 50 min Peloton Strength
The Weather Channel App warned me about the fog, so I took Scooby for a walk and then did a solid stack of strength workouts. I was feeling the effects of RK’s exercises for a few days.

Peloton workouts

Thursday: 3.5 Scooby Miles + 2.1 Treadmill Miles + 10 min Peloton Core
The Weather Channel App did not warn me about the fog, and this is the day I took that picture above of Scooby in the fog, cut my run short, and hopped on the treadmill.

Matt Wilpers Peloton Workouts

It was a Matt Wilpers kind of day.

Friday: 1 mile walk + 55 min Peloton Strength+ 31 Cycling Miles
My husband had the day off work, so I played hooky for a few hours for a long bike ride. The fall colors were amazing!

Before that, I started my day with a 10 min core workout, and Jess Sims’ new 45 minute strength workout. It was tough, but not crazy–although my glutes are feeling all those deadlifts, curtsy lunges and squats!

Saturday: 8.1 Scooby Miles + 10 min Peloton Core
My legs were tired after Friday’s strength workout and long bike ride, but Scooby was booking again. It was in the low 60s but humid!

Scooby in the fall leavesHe’s nearly camouflaged in these leaves!

Sunday: 20 min Peloton Core + 45 min Peloton Yoga
Woke up to cold, pouring rain, which gave me the nudge I needed to do yoga. I’m not going to lie, though, I did not like this class. It was my first class with Ross, and it was both too fast and too slow. That said, I do feel better having done it.

Peloton Workouts

Thanks to Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down link up. It’s always great for motivation and encouragement, but now it’s especially important for distance socializing. We may be physically apart, but we are in this together!

Will there be trick-or-treating in your neighborhood?

I will be very sad to lose my daylight after work.

I may have to get up early to run.

I’m contemplating getting a spin bike for the winter months esp if gyms are not open.

  2. Catrina says:

    Wow, that’s quite some fog!
We have just switched to winter time this weekend, so it got dark at 6 pm tonight. Awful!
Taking some time off on a Friday for a bike ride is best. Especially when you have such lovely autumn colours!

  3. Marcia says:

We had some of that mild, humid fog here too. Then it turned to wicked t’storms followed by 20s. October truly is all over the place. We hit a record one-day high of new cases here in IL yesterday. There really is no end in sight. The struggle is real for sure.

  4. Birchwood Pie says:

I had the best intentions of getting my runs started earlier this week, but it was just too dark and too rainy…so I get to slack for another week until the time change.

    • Coco says:

Scooby gets impatient if I don’t take him out within about 1/2 hour of getting up, so he’s the main reason I go out in the dark.

  5. kookyrunner says:

OMG that meme was SO me this week! The week kept dragging on and on and of course now the weekend is pretty much over in the blink of an eye.

I was speaking to my sister about the concept of “sameness” as well. We’re trying to come up with some things that we can do safely to break up the monotony of being home all the time.

We had similar weather this week and this morning it was like Fall was back with a vengeance since the temps dropped a lot overnight.

  6. Those foggy morning were weird for sure. By the time I headed out it was better. I have not done any of Ross’ yoga I usually stick to Chelsea or Denis.

  7. therightfits says:

It’s crazy how dark it is in the morning- and that fog is eery! Glad you have Scooby for protection 🙂

Agree with you about Covid and the sameness…not having trips/travel to look forward to, nothing really happening on the weekend, but no end in sight. It’s tough. Hopefully we can hang in there and 2021 will bring some return to normalcy.

  8. Wendy says:

My husband is just like yours and that is why we spend so much time at home. We stopped in Madison to see my son a few weeks ago, but that was as much as he could handle. He refused to go out for lunch. Sigh. Our numbers are skyrocketing here. It’s so disheartening. Fortunately, my job keeps me on track with the days. My hours are different every time I work, so I really have to stay on top of it!

    Hang in there!

    • Coco says:

Our positivity rate is < 5% but I don’t think that number means what it did before when only “sick” people were getting tested — now “healthy” people are getting tested to go to school or travel or have elective medical procedures (etc.), so it doesn’t give me that much comfort level.

  9. I love Peloton challenges! That app has been saving me every time I’ve been sidelined…whether it was from the gyms closing due to covid or now my injury making it so I have to do at home workouts.

  10. We had crappy weather all week as well (but we also were blessed with snow…don’t be jealous LOL). It’s never a warm fall in Iowa, but it’s much too cold much too soon. I want my Summer back (and a little taste of Fall returning would be nice, too).

  11. Michelle D. says:

We had so much fog this week too – it was a little eerie!

I’m right there with you on the feelings of sameness and days blurring together. And with numbers rising here too, it looks like it’s going to be more of the same 🙁

    I can’t believe we’re almost through the Core-tober challenge!

  12. So much fog. I did not notice it here in Chicago.

The days do blend it and makes the weeks go by fast.

  13. Sorry about the fog problems! Even though I’m used to being at home, because before this I worked from home, yes, I miss being able to go into a store just to look around sometimes, and I miss being served. I miss movies at the theater, too!

It won’t last forever though. Truly, it won’t. Nothing ever does. The only thing sure in life is change!

  14. Cari says:

Between weather fog and mask fog, I’m almost contemplating contacts. I don’t think they’d work for me, but I’m worn out. I think it’s less the fog and more everything you hit on. So HUGS

  15. Lisa says:

The fog was crazy last week! I did enjoy the warmer weather, just not when I was trying to race a 10k. We are still mostly staying home too. It’s hard that there is no end in sight.

  16. runswithpugs says:

It’s funny how everyone seemed to have fog this week.

Halloween and trick or treating is a go, here. Florida is in Phase 3, so no restrictions, really. We are going to stay close to home. The kids will wear costumes. We will BBQ and drink with our neighbors, and put on a movie on our outdoor screen. That way, we can celebrate and social distance.
