My Mid-Year Updates

Now that we are halfway through 2020, I want to share some mid-year updates. So much has changed since I dropped my daughter off at the airport early on New Year’s Day. It’s hard to imagine life ever being the same again, but chances are we’ll be looking back on 2020 and finding it hard to believe all we went through.

Mid-Year Updates

It’s no surprise that my monthly running miles have increased since the start of the year. Now that I’m not going to Orangetheory, Cyclebar, or Corepower Yoga, I’ve got more time to run. I don’t usually set monthly mileage goals, but since I hit 100 miles in May, I’ve decided to make that a goal–at least for as long as I’m not going to those studio classes.

Is it too late to runfess that I chose not to run on June 30
to not set the bar too high for July?

On the other hand, my cycling miles are down. Of course I haven’t logged any indoor cycling miles since early March, and since we are still avoiding the bike path our weekend rides have maxed out at 25-30 miles. bar graph of mid year cycling milesA mid-year update wouldn’t be complete without noting that I reached 100 Peloton classes this week. That includes several 5 minute core workouts and a number of 10 minute workouts, but some really hard ones too.

100 Peloton Classes

In other updates, do you remember the saga of the “Mizunos” I ordered in January? (If you missed it, you can read about it here.) I finally got a refund from PayPal in March, but imagine my surprise when the manager of our office mail room called me a few weeks ago to tell me the package he’d helped me ship back to China had been returned!

Nike Running Shoes

He thought his sister would like the shoes,
so at least they will get some running miles on them now.

In a more fun surprise, I received an email from the Lawyers Have Heart organizers I thought was sending a finisher’s certificate, but actually was notifying me of an age group award!

2020 LHH AG Award

Official unofficial time: 1:02 (9:47 pace).

I did this virtual race with Scooby and didn’t run particularly hard, but I must have been one of the few women in my age group who bothered to enter their time.

Weekly Run Down

Peloton must have been reading my blog last week and saw my wish for a workout schedule. It sent out this email with a pretty balanced training plan that I followed Monday-Thursday, adding the core workout from the four week core program I’ve been doing.

Peloton Training PlainIt was in the mid-70s most mornings, which meant shorter runs with Scooby. I’m debating whether to do more short runs and maybe even ditch my long runs altogether for as long as it’s this warm. I’ve never done a run streak before and the last thing I want to do is get an over-training injury, but it’s hard to take it easy when there’s nothing else to do ….

Monday:  6 mile run + 40 min Peloton Strength Workouts
For the first time in ages I broke out of my neighborhood for a run! There were a few others out running, but it was striking how little traffic there was and how few tourists were at the Lincoln Memorial.

I was lucky to catch this last glimpse of sunrise at 5:30 am

I didn’t have a lot going on at work, so I did the scheduled Peloton strength workouts when I got home–and reached my 100 workout milestone.

Tuesday: 50 min Peloton Workouts
I already had logged 110 miles in June, so I focused on strength workouts–and added the standing yoga program for extra recovery.

6/30 Peloton Workouts

Wednesday: 3.6 Scooby Miles + 45 min Peloton Bootcamp + 10 min Core
It was in the 70s, so I kept my Scooby miles short and hopped on the treadmill for a 45 min Hip Hop Bootcamp workout. The workout had a lot of switches which I thought would make it go faster, but it seem to go on forever. Maybe it was just a hard workout. 🙂

Scooby Miles

What’s that squirrel doing up there?

Thursday: 3.1 Scooby Miles + 35 min Peloton Strength Workouts

Friday:  3.1 Scooby Miles + Peloton All For One Workouts
I went all-in on the Peloton All For One workouts and did the running, yoga, and strength workouts, including the live warm-up and post-workout stretching classes. I had to change shorts after the running workout and needed to scarf down a sandwich before the strength workout, but I made it through!

Peloton All For One Workouts

Since I am new to Peloton I don’t know much about the “All For One” workouts, but I understand it’s a once-a-year event where instructors usually co-lead classes. Due to COVID-19 they had to do things differently this year, but I think it worked well. For the main workouts, different instructors led different segments, passing the virtual baton to the next instructor.

For the running workout, each instructor lead the workout for one song.

For the yoga workout, the instructors changed every few minutes.

For the strength workout, each instructor led a block.

That’s sweet-talking Jess Sims–
don’t let her kind voice fool you!

Saturday July 4th: 3.1 Scooby Miles + 25 Miles Cycling
I started Independence Day with my three mile loop with Scooby.

After coffee and breakfast, my husband and I headed out for a bike ride. We can’t get to D.C. without being on the (crowded) bike path, so we rode around Alexandria, including to Long Bridge Park at the north end of Crystal City/National Landing, which is where this photo was taken.

July 4th Cycling

Don’t worry, I spent the rest of the day doing nothing!

Sunday: 8 humid miles
It was a smidge cooler than it had been (74 instead of 77), but higher humidity made up for it. I ran 3 miles with Scooby and then 5 more on my own, using two Peloton Outdoor Running programs to keep me going. I know this long run doesn’t fit with my new “plan” but I need to put my new Brooks Adrenaline to the test while I’m still in my 30-day trial period.

Our church had it’s first service since March–outside–with everyone wearing masks and seated in lawn chairs at least 6 feet apart. It was nice to see each other and worship together, even though we still aren’t partaking in the bread and wine part of Holy Communion.

Thanks to Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down link up. It’s always great for motivation and encouragement, but now it’s especially important for distance socializing. We may be physically apart, but we are in this together!

All things considering, how has the first half of 2020 gone for you?

Did you find a way to celebrate July 4th?

Running and fitness-wise, the first half of 2020 has been great! Thank goodness because everything else, not so good. We didn’t really celebrate the 4th here except to watch Hamilton. Really exciting, we are!

  2. I completely forgot the all for one, but then again, between my visit to my mom & a long run the next day, I definitely had a planned rest day on Friday.

That’s great that you were able to “go” to church.

I must be the only runner who is actually running less miles since COVID hit, LOL!

  3. Looks like you have a great start to your fitness this year. I knew you were going to love the Peloton workouts! congrats on your 100th. It’s fun to hit the milestones

    • Coco says:

Indeed! I’ll have to watch my strength class tally and do a live workout for a possible shoutout. Jess Sims does well fitting a lot in.

  4. Darlene S. Cardillo says:

I caved. I had seen Hamilton on Broadway but I subscribed and watched it again. Love the music too.

As you you had an active week.

My running miles are about the same. But walking miles are way more. In fact more than my running miles.

  5. kookyrunner says:

I remember the saga of the Mizunos from China! I’m glad that you got the refund from PayPal.

So glad that you loved the All For Once classes. You are so right about Jess – she looks sweet as pie but will destroy you in a workout, especially with her listening games, EMOMs and finishers lol.

So glad that your church re-opened and is offering service safely for all its members. Are there still offering a live stream of service too? My church is still doing live streaming for services.

    • Coco says:

Destroy is a good word for Jess’s classes!

Oh, yes, there is still virtual church on Facebook Live or YouTube — recorded Saturday. Our outdoor worship is weather-permitting.

  6. Birchwood Pie says:

I 100% agree with your assessment that we’ll look back on 2020 and won’t be able to believe that we went through all that. My view is that I had more time for running, got to spend more time with family, and went an entire 3 months without buying gas, not a bad trade off all things considered.

  7. Marcia says:

It’s hard to believe half the year is gone! That is so crazy the shoes came back! Haha! I haven’t really run more but I’ve definitely spent more time in the pain cave.

    • Coco says:

Those shoes have been around the world — or the equivalent. I’ve spent more time in my basement gym too. Long enough to start thinking of improvements I’d like to make ….

  8. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

Our church resumed services 3 (or maybe it’s been 4?) weeks ago. We’re continuing to do the live stream for now, though. It’s kind of nice not having to scurry home from an early-morning walk/ride/run, finish the WRD blog post (to add in that Sunday workout LOL), AND have to clean up to get to church. Anyways, you had a busy week!! Great workouts!!!

  9. Cari says:

Doesn’t it feel like another time that we had dinner together?
I love your sunrise pic! Such a great site.
I didn’t do the 4th. Could hear the fireworks from my apartment but didn’t feel like turning on the TV. It was basically blursday like most of summer

  10. I STILL cannot believe we are halfway through 2020. In a way I am glad but at the same time sad because of everything that happened (and is still happening). I hope the rest of the year goes smoother.

I really love your views of DC. I love it there and would love to go back one day.

We didn’t do much on the 4th. For the past couple of years I’ve run a race on the 4th but this year it was cancelled. I did 6 miles along the lakefront.

I remember the ordeal with the shoes. Now, why were they sent back?

    • Coco says:

I hope you do get to come to D.C. someday …. I am guessing the address they gave for the return wasn’t legit. Or they had closed up shop by the time they got there.

  11. Lisa says:

I think 2020 has gone pretty well, despite the obvious things that are not going well. I’ve had more time to focus on running but at the same time there’s been no pressure because of no races. That being said, I really haven’t done any cross training and instead I just run more than usual. It’s nice to not have to rush out the door in the mornings!

    • Coco says:

It is tempting to just run, since it’s easy! The Peloton workouts are giving me some motivation for strength workouts.

  12. Laurie says:

Congrats on the AG award in the virtual race. Way to go! Our church has started having drive-in services outside too. They are not the same as a regular service but better than the virtual ones. Nice workouts this week.

    • Coco says:

Our church doesn’t have the facilities for drive-through services, so we are at the mercy of the weather. So far we have been blessed with lovely Sunday mornings. 🙂

  13. Congrats on hitting your 100th class!

I can’t believe that the shoes were returned?! At least you did get your refund and found a good home for the shoes 🙂

  14. runswithpugs says:

Lots of congratulations are in order! 100 Peloton classes! Age group awards! All the miles! You are making it happen!
