A Refreshing Break

Between our long weekend in Colorado and the recent dip in temperatures and humidity, this past week has been a refreshing break. It was just what I needed to recharge for the last month of summer.

Waterfall on the trail to Lost Lake—yes, I needed a jacket!

A Refreshing Break

We had an early flight on Friday that would have gotten us to Denver by 9 am, but storms Thursday night delayed our crew getting in, so they needed more time on the ground before they could fly again, leading to a 2 hour delay. That was fine, but I wish Frontier had updated their app before I got in shower at 4:30 am!

We did our main hike on Saturday, in Roosevelt National Forest. There’s not much parking near the trailhead, but on weekends there’s a free shuttle from Nederland High School a few miles away. We got there by 9 am and got on the bus with fellow hikers and several trail runners who made me think of Wendy!

The 2+ mile hike to the lake was pretty much all uphill, but at least there were some shady stretches.

Once we got to the lake we stopped for lunch before hiking the loop around it, and then back to the trail for a faster downhill return.

Strategic framing to avoid the Boy Scout troop across the lake to the right

On our way down we spotted another waterfall off the trail and cut over for a photo op.

If you play Code Names you might recognize my husband
as an Innocent Bystander 🤣

Sunday we opted for an easier route — 3.5 flat miles around Lake MacDonald.

The main attraction is the Prairie Dogs —
I promise there are some live ones in the background.

We also saw Blue Heron on the lake.

After that hike we went back to our hotel to shower, and then caught a matinee of the new Superman movie—it was cute!

Weekly Wrap

I kept up my Peloton streak doing 5-10 min core and stretch classes in our hotel room or the hotel gym. The little Hampton Inn in Longmont has a nice Peloton bike—I didn’t have time for a ride, but I used it to play a core class to show my appreciation.

Back at home the weather was crazy nice for August. Overnight temperatures dropped into the 60s and the humidity disappeared. That was nice enough to run with Scooby and he seemed back to 100% post-surgery!

Tuesday—4 miles for Scooby’s first post-surgery run!

Still nice on Thursday—5 miles for Scooby’s second post-surgery run!

Amazing weather Saturday—5.5 miles for Scooby’s thrid post-surgery run!

Instead of recapping my Peloton workouts, I just want to highlight a few classes.

I took this class to get the kinks out after our flight home, and it was a nice all-around mobility class.

I took this class as a pre-run activation and was surprised how much harder the bands made it. I even had DOMS the next day!

I’m highlighting this class because it kicked my a$$ and I could not do all the intervals as cued. I pretty much hit the wall before the last block of intervals and took the rest of the ride as a moderate effort.

I bookmarked it to take again, and will be sure to have breakfast and not do a lower body workout first.

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Are you taking a vacation in August?

I love Colorado in the summer–the weather is so great! I’m glad you enjoyed the trails. We had some cooler weather last week, and it felt great. And glad to see Scooby is all recovered! Cocoa was sick last night, and I took her to the UWMadison vet ER (we’re up at the lake) to get her checked out. She’s better today, but definitely not herself. We think she drank lake water. I swear, these pups are like an extra child!

  2. Colorado is the place to be in the summer for sure! Looks like a nice few days with your daughter. I’m optimistic that August will be slightly better than July here. That Hannah class is one of my go to’s always feel it-try it with some bands on too

  3. Jenny says:

That looks LOVELY!!! I WISH I were going somewhere cooler in August. Unfortunately we’re back to school tomorrow so our “summer” is over.
Yay! Scooby is back to his runs! I’m so glad he’s recovered and that you had nice weather for him.

  4. Melissa says:

What a lovely excursion!! Everything looks wonderful. Glad you had a good time and got in some nice activity and a break from the heat.

  5. Your Colorado trip sure looks fun! All that hiking (with family, nonetheless) would be great 😉 Gosh, thanks for the reminder about the benefits of Barre…just realized I’ve taken a rather lengthy sabbatical, LOL.

  6. Debbie says:

I’m glad you had such a nice time while in Colorado! It was beautiful when we were there in the early part of our road trip, and while the heat and humidity was downright miserable at home (I think they were calling it the heat dome or something similar).

  7. LOL on Innocent Bystander! Roosevelt National Forest looks very beautiful! I’m bummed that Spirit airlines stopped flying from Detroit to Denver. I would love to take a quick trip out to Colorado when it’s not ski season but the flights are more expensive now.

  8. Catrina says:

Colorado is the one place I really want to visit in the US!!
What a fantastic getaway – that Lost Lake trail sounds like the perfect mix of challenge and beauty. And I bet it felt great to wear a jacket in August. 😄
So great to hear Scooby is back to running triple runs in a week – that’s quite the comeback!
Also, huge respect for keeping your Peloton streak alive even while traveling.

  9. Jenn says:

So nice to see Scooby back at it. And i’m glad you had a lovely vacation.

Our summer is now shut down – school started today so no vacations for us until after Thanksgiving. We will be going to Indianapolis with the band in November, but that’s it.

Glad you’ve had some nicer weather!

  10. Darlene S Cardillo says:

Scooby is recording a lot of miles. He has me beat. Glad he is feeling fine.

It looks like a great trip in Colorado and with great weather. That’s bonus,

  11. Jessie says:

looks like an active and fun holiday Coco! What fun. Colorado is beautiful.

Glad Scoobs is back in action!
