April Showers and Flowers in New York City

This week I had a quick trip to New York City with just enough time to have dinner with Cari and run through Central Park—Oh, and attend some work meetings. 😉 I dodged April showers and enjoyed the flowers and trees in full bloom in Central Park.

Grey skies, purple trees

If you follow Cari, you know she was in D.C. last weekend for the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run. I even had lunch with her and Deborah on Friday. I beat her back to NYC on an early train Monday, but she arrived in time to meet me for dinner.

No photo of us, but here’s the dessert we shared. 😋

Monday was a rainy day up and down the northeast corridor, but it dried out in time for a run Tuesday morning. I did my usual route from my hotel up 5th Avenue to Central Park and got “lost” doing my best to avoid the road work Cari so kindly warned me about. It was a grey morning, but the trees were so pretty.

So idyllic!

Cari also gave me detailed instructions on how to take the subway from Penn Station to Grand Central Station which is right near my office. It was a good time to figure it out since I was traveling light and traveling solo, and didn’t want to wait for a taxi out in the rain. It was super easy—I even did it in the reverse direction on my way home. I don’t know if I got lucky, but I barely had to wait for a train either way, so it also was much faster than a car ride. Win-win!

Weekly Wrap

Even a quick trip throws off my schedule and leaves me feeling confused the rest of the week. Scooby had an ultrasound under sedation on Friday (thankfully everything is fine) so I didn’t take him on any runs this week. My Peloton Breakthrough Crew group is focusing on stability and balance classes this month, so I’ve been discovering some good low-impact classes.

Sunday: Core + Barre + 40 min Peloton Ride
Why did I do a core class before church? I guess I feel the need to do something before I hop in the shower! I needed another shower after Hannah F’s ride later.

Monday: 15 min Bodyweight Strength
It was raining at 4:45 am and I had to leave the house in an hour to catch my train, so I let Scooby sleep in while I did a bodyweight strength class—don’t worry, my husband took him out later.

I did Rad’s class on Monday and the other two before my run Tuesday.

Tuesday: Core + 5.25 mile Run
I did two short workouts in my hotel room to warm up and wait for daylight, and then headed out. Garmin does a lot better tracking me in NYC than in Chicago — even up 5th Avenue. My mile splits are all over the place between stop lights and photo stops, but this run really felt amazing!

Wednesday: Core + UB Strength + 30 min Peloton Ride
Back home and back on my Peloton bike for a slow burn with CVV.

Thursday: Core + LB Strength + 3.5 min Tread Miles
I was working from home but couldn’t wait for daylight, so I walked Scooby in the dark and then hopped on my tread for my run. This was a Pace Targets class and I did not even attempt  > 8.1 mph for my “max” effort — 7.5 mph for 30 seconds was max enough. 🥵

Friday: FB Strength + 30 min Peloton Ride
I caught a break in the rain for Scooby’s walk, but it was raining by the time we dropped him off at the vet @ 7 am. For this 80s ride Hannah played one song of an artist in a band and then one solo — think Genesis and Phil Collins. Yet another way Peloton instructors keep me entertained!

Saturday:  15 min Pilates + 60 min Peloton Rides
The rain was clearing out when I got up, but I decided to push my run to Sunday when I could take Scooby. He seemed to be over the effects of the anesthesia, but I wanted to be sure there was no remaining wooziness — he was definitely out of sorts Friday evening. Olivia’s PowerZone class was tough. I focused on her sparkly top to power through and ended up with a 45 min PR even though I didn’t match the target metrics 100%.

This week I’ve got a quick trip to Chicago and hope to meet up with Erica and get a run in.

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up, and to each of you for stopping by.

Did you have April showers this week?

Nice workouts this week, even with your NYC trip! I was in NYC pretty much just for a day and got in one run, but it was 30s and rainy. Not the best weather, but still always good to ge t in a run in the city! Looks like you got some nice blossoms on your trip.

I’m glad Scooby got good results from his tests on Friday. I’m sure he’s happy to be able to run with you again and hope all went well this morning.

We didn’t get as much rain west of the city as you guys got closer in. Right now while it’s still cool I’m wishing for rain, but come summer when it’s warm enough to ride outside I’ll be complaining. LOL

We missed each other again in NYC. Glad you had time to meet up with Cari.
I didn’t have time to get to CP when I was there so I go back April 28.
Subways are the best way to get everywhere in NYC.

Have fun in Chicago. Say hi to Erica.

Our weather this week was challenging with all the rain. Way to pivot and get your workouts in. Yes, even short trips throw me off a bit as well. Safe travels this week

  5. I did the same pre-church thing this morning, but mine was a quick 1.5-mile walk before an even quicker clean-up before jumping in my car. It was cool (low-50F’s), but the afternoon 80F’s will have me on the bike 😉

  6. Susanne says:

That looks like a beautiful run, even on a grey morning. Nice week of mixed workouts, and I’m glad Scooby is ok!
Stability and balance can be quite hard work even if it sounds chill! I had to cut down on my stability exercises because they worked too much on my hips and it was hard to mix them with my normal strength training.
We’ve had brilliant weather lately but expect some April showers in the coming days. 🙁

  7. Jenny says:

Sounds like an eventful week! Glad everything with Scooby is okay. I think you downplayed it, but I would be a basket case if I had to take my cat in for an ultrasound under sedation. Maybe I’m just overprotective though ; ) Anyway glad everything is okay and you have your running buddy back!
We even had some April showers down here, which was remarkable because we haven’t had any rain in a long time. Enjoy the Chicago trip!

  8. You had a busy week! That dessert looks delicious, exactly what I would eat. April is tricky. I’m crossing my fingers that it stays colder here until after my race in two week!!

  9. Wendy says:

Glad you had such a nice trip to NYC!!! I hope you get ot meet up with Erica, she’s the best!

  10. Catrina says:

So you met Cari in DC and in NYC within only a few days? How cool is that!
Central Park looks like a great place to run! We will be there at the end of the month and now I’m thinking how I can fit in a run there!
Have a good week, Coco! I hope you can fit in a run in Chicago!
