This week I had a conference in D.C. and indulged myself by staying at the conference hotel instead of driving back-and-forth each day. That let me fully partake in all the networking activities and also go for a run in the city.
I still had to run at dark o’clock to make the breakfast session with Rory Cooper,
who has been recognized for his wheelchair technology inventions.
Capitalizing on Capitol Views
From my hotel, I ran down Pennsylvania Avenue, past the White House, towards the Capitol. I decided I would do an out-and-back so I could get a better picture of the White House in day light.
Also, maybe the National Park Service truck would be gone
From various races I knew running down Pennsylvania Avenue would give me a view of the Capitol all the way. I also enjoyed seeing the Old Post Office building—now a Waldorf Astoria hotel, but the tower is a national protected site with free public access and tours run by the National Park Service.
There weren’t many people around the Capitol grounds when I got there.
But after capturing the photo above, I turned around and saw troops posing by the statue of Ulysses S. Grant.
Thank you for your service.
I ran up Capitol Hill to get the view from the other side
and had the plaza to myself.
As I headed back toward the White House, the blue rooster on the rooftop terrace of the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art caught my eye.
According to the gallery’s website, Katharina Fritsch’s Hahn/Cock was donated by Glenstone Museum in honor of the resilience of the American people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its whimsy certainly brightened my day—as did this truck-free view of the White House.
The trees are just starting to bloom
Weekly Wrap
The rest of my weeks was the usual combination of Peloton strength, runs, and rides, plus a run with Scooby on Saturday.
Thankfully whatever was bothering my leg last week is fully resolved—yay!
A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up throughout the year, and to each of you for stopping by.
Do you enjoy playing tourist in your own town?
Our city is so pretty even to those of us who live here. It’s always fun to remind ourselves of how much history and beauty is here. Glad you had a little mini staycation.
Love all the pics! You captured the beauty of the city- morning runs are always the best time to do so. What a treat to stay in town and skip the commute!
Your photos are absolutely stunning, Coco! I especially love the shot from behind Ulysses S. Grant’s statue, with the troops standing between you and him—it has such a strong, immersive atmosphere. A really fantastic composition!
And hooray for being niggle-free! Now you can power full steam ahead with your race training—exciting times ahead! 🚀
You got some beautiful photos of those buildings! And happy to hear your leg is back to normal.
I am so jealous of your proximity to the Capitol and all the sights and landmarks within reach! I’d LOVED to have been running with you. Thanks for sharing all the beautiful pics 😉
So glad your leg is feeling better! Running alongside all those famous monuments sounds amazing. We hope to visit DC sometime soon with the kids – so many fun (and free!) activities to do!
I’m so glad your leg feels better.
That rooster is too much.
How does it feel running in DC? What’s the vibe? My stomach feels so fluttery just looking at your photos, and I wonder if it’s that way for everyone.
What a great tour of the city! How many miles was that?
Looking back to my conference 2 weeks ago, I should have stayed downtown as well. That commuting back and forth was exhausting and I missed out on all the networking activities too. It is so much fun playing tourist in your hometown!
Very glad everything is feeling good! Beautiful photos- and I’ll bet it was fun to stay in the conference hotel (I like hotels!) Glad Scooby was able to get his run in on Saturday!
Yay and the pain-free leg.
DC is a beautiful city. I enjoyed touring the sights. Of course, I needed more time.
It was great to meet you finally.
