Feeling All The Feelings
At The February 2025 Coffee Date

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that January was a rough month for me. I care too much about things out of my control and struggled to protect my peace. But it wasn’t all bad, so I promise our coffee date won’t be a complete downer.

If we were having coffee, I would start with most trivial good news that really did make me happy. The new CEO of Starbucks rolled out some changes (mostly reinstating previous practices as far as I can tell), including having self-serve half-and-half again.

The baristas at my office Starbucks have taken good care of me, but I’d rather be able to fix my coffee my way without feeling like a pain in the ass!

Yep, it’s back!

If we were having coffee, I would have to share my sadness over the DCA airplane/helicopter crash. Earlier the same day I took a picture of the still-icy Potomac river from my office. DCA is down the river in the other direction, and not visible from my office, but very close.

You may have heard that a number of young ice skaters were on the plane. I have two close friends with daughters who skate, and they knew several of the skaters (and parents) whose lives were lost. 😞

If we were having coffee, before switching the subject to lighter topics, I would tell you about another Potomac River tragedy that hit close to home. A few weeks ago, a pick-up truck driving across the Memorial Bridge into D.C. hit another car and then crossed all lanes of traffic and went through the railing into the water. The driver and passenger did not survive. Commuting past the gap in the railing knowing what happened has been hard.

OK, enough sadness.

If we were having coffee, I would ask if anyone remembers how hard I had to work last January to meet my billable hour goal for work? Well, this year I exceeded that goal by over 200 hours—which underscores why I’d never worried about that “requirement” before. February starts our new fiscal year, so I’m back to zero again.  🤣

This is without Thursday and Friday

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you I’m diving back into reading recaps and book reviews.

In my first post I shared my January reads and my best and worst of 2024. Check it out if you’re looking for something to read—or avoid!

So happy to have you joining us for book discussions! <3

There's been so much tragedy and just terrible news/events lately, so I'm definitely right there with you in needing to protect my peace. I'm really glad the place I work for will not be listening to the changes the administration wants to make.

  2. Catrina says:

It’s amazing how little things can bring so much joy—sometimes all it takes is a friendly smile, a kind message, or yes, self-serve creamer at Starbucks to make our day!
Congrats on not just meeting but exceeding your billable hours goal! Let’s just hope they don’t take that as a sign to bump it up to 1,900 next year! 😅

  3. Darlene S. Cardillo says:

Hope February treat you better. I’m not optimistic though politically.

I fly into DCA in March. Didn’t really how close you are.

I started keeping track of my reads in January for the first time ever. Haven’t had time to write any reviews.

  4. Michelle says:

Like you, I’ve been finding it hard to protect my peace – I’ve significantly decreased my news intake and social media which has helped!

One of my goals for this year is to dive back into reading so I look forward to checking out your reviews!

  5. Marcia says:

As a figure skater and a skating coach for many years, I am beyond heart broken for the skating clubs, families and the entire figure skating community. It’s an unspeakable tragedy beyond comprehension, to say the least.
I think you are so wise to focus on the tiny glimmers of goodness: Like being able to pour own condiments at Starbucks. January was seriously difficult for sure. Here’s to better times.

  6. Debbie says:

I also vividly remember when Air Florida crashed into the 14th Street Bridge. In fact, we had just been talking about Lenny Skutnik’s heroism a few days before this most recent accident.

  7. Those 2 tragedies did hit close to home especially for those of us who live so close and fly into that airport all the time. Life is really short, too short to dwell on things out of our control. I’ve been working on gratitude and focusing on what is in my control.

  8. So sorry got your tough January. Let’s all hope for a better February. That crash was SO tragic…I can’t imagine the heartache & sadness everyone is experiencing.

  9. Melissa says:

January was not an easy month, but at least it’s over. I hate seeing all the stories of those impacted by the plane/helicopter crash – but I can’t stop reading them. IT’s awful.
