Another week with my Peloton Bike+, another “first” experience—several “firsts” as a matter of fact—my first Pelofondo and my first 90 minute Peloton ride.
I figured I’d start with a half metric century goal, divided over the weekend.
My First Pelofondo
Pelofondo is a weekend cycling distance challenge run through the Summit app. It’s not limited to Peloton riders, but you can link your Peloton account to track your mileage. Most people join a team and “pledge” a certain number of miles. I joined the team for my Peloton BreakthroughCrew Facebook group and set a goal of 31 miles—a half metric century. Since I haven’t done any long rides in a while, I planned to take a long class on Saturday and a shorter class on Sunday.
That long class on Saturday was my first 90 min class—a live 90 min PowerZone ride with Matt Wilpers. The class started at 7 am. I pelofess that when my alarm went off at 6 am, knowing others were getting up to take the class kept me from hitting snooze. (There were close to 3000 in the ride). I had just enough time to walk Scooby and get in a 5 min warm-up stretch before hopping on my bike.
My post-ride data
Matt programmed the class with 4 blocks, each with two 7 min sub-blocks targeting Pozerzone output level 3 (high end of cardio, just below tempo). During each block he coached us to do one sub-zone at high cadence/low resistance and the other at low cadence/high resistance. The playlist was divided into 4 blocks too — rock, pop, rap/hip hop, EDM. All that programming made the time go by surprisingly quickly, and got me to 27 miles.
Weekly Wrap
We didn’t get more snow this week, but it stayed cold so last week’s snow lingered in yards and on unshoveled sidewalks.
Sunday morning I bundled up to take Scooby out—it was in the 20s!
This neighbor has since taken these decorations down
Then I headed to my basement for an upper body strength + treadmill workout.
Monday I paired lower body strength with a low-intensity PowerZone ride I chose by the playlist. CDE does the 80s so well.
Tuesday I opted for core + upper body strength + 3.5 miles with Hannah F.
Wednesday I put my PowerZones to the test with a tough class with Sam. It dispelled any thoughts my zones were too low, as it was appropriately hard to stay in Zone 4 for 4 minutes at time.
Thursday I was back on the tread and decided to push my pace in Jess King’s class and hold 6.7 mph (~9mm) for a full mile—and I did it!
Friday I got a later start than I intended, so I swapped out my planned tread class for a short music-focus ride with Sam. I’m not sure doubling down on lower body classes before Pelofondo was a good idea, but JJ’s class was worth bookmarking with deadlifts, squats and hip bridges.
Saturday I took Scooby out before taking that 90 min ride. I took this picture to show why I’m still not running outside. This is the only icy spot left on my “around the block” route, but there are several like this along my running routes.
With more snow forecast for today, I’m glad I’ve got my tread!
A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up throughout the year, and to each of you for stopping by.
If you want to be inspired by fourth and fifth graders, check out the finalists in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. oratory competition sponsored by my firm. This year’s topic: “What would Dr. King tell us about our responsibility as citizens and leaders in America today?”
My streets/sidewalks look like yours right now — lots of snow and ice and each day there’s more on the way. I have been inside nearly every day in January! I can’t wait until I can go outside again. Stay warm!
I don’t blame you one bit for staying inside. While our walkways are clear, we are below zero here, and I’m staying inside as well. Nice work on the Pelofondo and the 9mm!
Yikes, that ice! Glad you have your new Peloton bike (and the treadmill, of course.) Sounds like you had a great week of interesting workouts.
I want to read about that oratory competition- I could use some inspiration about now!
The kids never disappoint!
I have never done one of Pelofondos but always looks fine. I am not as into the long bike rides as much anymore
I usually consider 30 min a long ride!
Well done on that 90-minute PowerZone ride! Your post-ride data is impressive. By getting those 27 miles, you nearly hit your weekend goal of 31 miles. I have no doubt you’ll be raising that target soon—50 miles next weekend, perhaps? You’re on an amazing trajectory! 🚴♀️💪
I think this is a quarterly event! I may do another 90 min before that, though.
Wow, Coco, great job on the Pelofondo! Sounds like a great challenge.
Most of our snow melted Friday when we hit 50F, but now it’s really cold, so any residual is icy. I ran on the trails this morning, it wasn’t too bad. A few snow covered spots but not much ice.
I did the Pelofondo three years ago…and have forgotten about it every year since (they also have them in July, I think). Sounds like the Pelo bike is working out well!
great job on the bike and with all your workouts. Our paths are icy too and now it’s snowing… so tough to get a run in… and let’s not talk about the cold temps!!
Sounds like you’re really enjoying your Peloton bike! When I’m taking classes, I have to estimate the resistance on my bike, but I’m sure you’re familiar with that. That segment of the sidewalk looks very slippery. Did you get much snow today. We only got about 2 more inches.
How fun that you are doing the Pelofondo! I didn’t realize that riders outside of Peloton could join. With the upcoming cold spell I will be doing a lot of treadmill runs, even if our roads are clear!
