Muddling Through

I’ve been in a weird place the past few weeks even before my month of travel.

Muddling Through

Over the past few months, my father-in-law’s health took a sharp downturn, and my husband has made several trips to Florida to seem him and help out his mom. A few weeks ago it became clear he was not going to recover, so my husband and his sister both went to Florida to be with him while they still could. He passed away last weekend.

He was a commercial airline pilot—you can see his brief obituary here

I am a bit uncomfortable sharing this, because my sadness is secondary to the grief my husband, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and children are going through. I ache for them and am trying to be as present and supportive as I can, but I know I am not as devastated as they are. On the other hand, I can’t deny that my father-in-law’s passing is bringing up memories of my Dad and generally has our universal mortality weighing heavily on my mind. What can I do but muddle through?

Weekly Run Down

In addition to big life stresses and sadness, work was hectic this week. I gave myself grace, and let myself sleep when I could—why is it so much easier to do at 5 am than 11 pm?

Sunday: FB Strength + 4.5 Tread Miles
I felt horrible during this tread run—I think stress had my heart rate high. I nearly quit several times, but stuck it out by adding in some walk breaks. The format of the class was really good with moderate hill intervals, so I bookmarked it to take it again when I feel better.

Monday: 1 mile Scooby Walk
After getting the news Sunday night and then connecting with my kids, I didn’t get much sleep. I opted for a bit more sleep in the morning and then headed into work after walking Scooby so I could wrap up what I needed to do as early as possible.

Tuesday: Core + 4.75 Scooby Miles
I still couldn’t sleep much—worrying how my husband was coping in Florida and wishing I could be with him—but this time I got up early. I charged my headlamp while doing my warm-up and took Scooby out for a dark o’clock run.

Wednesday: 30 min Strength + 20 min Peloton Ride
I wasn’t up for a tough workout, so I tried a new “strength for soccer” class which had some balance work and a lot of breaks. Then I hopped on my bike for a quick mood booster with Hannah F.

Thursday: Core + 4.0 scooby Miles
My husband came home Wednesday, and I was able to work from home to be with him a bit. While he slept in, I took Scooby out for another dark o’clock run—it was still quite dark when we finished at 6:20 am.

Friday: 20 min FB Strength
I had a 7 am conference call and was going to skip working out, but decided to squeeze in 20 minutes with Callie—I’m glad I did!

Saturday: 45 min FB Strength + 2.0 mile Tread
I did the 45 min strength workout I didn’t have time to do Friday, and then hopped on my tread for a 20 min walk+ run class with Jess Sims. After the warm up, there were four 2/2 run/walk blocks, with the walks done at 5/6/7/8 % incline.

And now I’m off to Chicago for a few days!

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

So, it’s been a week, but that’s life.

Oh dear, Coco! I’m so sorry about your father-in-law. It must be a very tough time for you all.
I am impressed how you keep up with your workouts despite all the turmoil happening around you. I’m sure it also helps to keep your mental health going strong! Nice job!
