The Calm Before The Storm

This past week and this coming week are the calm before the storm of my fall travel schedule. Next weekend I embark on my first of three trips to Chicago, one week I’ll also go to Boston, and at the end of October I’ll be heading to Orlando for a firm retreat. I’m trying not to stress over all the logistics, time out of the office, and time away from home before it’s upon me, so I’m taking deep breaths and savoring some down time.

Scooby’s almost always calm

The Calm Before The Storm

One thing I decided to do now to get ready for my upcoming time in crowded airports and on packed airplanes was to get the new covid vaccine. It’s a bit early for the flu vaccine but I decided to get that one too-one in each arm. Ever since a nurse told me that moving my arms helps with the sore arm side-effect, I’ve done a Peloton Arms + Light Weights class post-vaccine. This new one from Jon Hosking was good enough to bookmark.

The Giant pharmacy went with demure bandages.

My arms still hurt the next day, and I had a bit of a headache, but that’s it.

The rest of my week was pretty boring calm but I’ll take it!

Weekly Run Down

Our weather was pretty nice and my schedule allowed for a few runs with Scooby. I did lighter strength workouts because my arms were really sore after those vaccines!

Sunday: Core + Barre + 5.3 Scooby Miles
I did 10 minute Peloton core and barre workouts to warm-up, and then took Scooby out for a 5-sih mile run. Since we headed out in full daylight at 7 am, I needed a hat to keep the sun out of my eyes.

Monday: FB Strength + 20 min Peloton Ride
After a weekend of pretty intense cardio workouts, it was time for a strength workout and low impact Peloton ride.

Tuesday: Core + 3.9 Scooby Miles
I underestimated how much my arms would hurt running, but sucked it up and got through this run. I did not, however, bother to run an extra 0.1 to round up my mileage!

Wednesday: Core + ALW + 20 min Peloton Ride
I was feeling better but opted for another light day—and another Arms + Light Weights class.

Thursday: 30 min FB Strength + 1.5 mile Tread Run
I had a tight schedule but enough time after my strength workout to hop on the tread for 1.5 miles. I do have to remember that a 15 min class takes at least 18 minutes with the 1 minute intro and 2 min cool down, but I made it out the door on time—although I was still overheated after my shower. 🥵

Friday: Core + 5.1  Scooby Miles
I got up without hitting the snooze button, and even after warming up with 10 min core and bodyweight classes, it was only 5:40 when I headed out the door with Scooby. I wanted to do my 5-ish mile loop which goes through a park, but won’t run through the park in the dark. I decided to take a different (longer) route to the park, braving a hill I haven’t run up since my hamstring injury last year.

^^^The Hill

The loop I usually do

In addition to the extra hill, it was a lot more humid than I expected, so I was pretty tired by the end and let Scooby take longer sniff breaks in our last mile.

Saturday: Core  + ALW + 20 min Peloton Ride + Corepower Yoga
I am struggling with my Saturday morning schedule around that 8:30 Coewpower Yoga class. I wanted to take it easy but I woke up early and had a lot of  time to kill. I tried RK’s newest standing core class, but didn’t feel like it did much so I tacked on an older 5 min core class I have bookmarked. Then I hopped on my bike for a low impact ride with Sam Yo. I still had an hour for breakfast (etc.) until it was time to head to yoga.

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Do you have a busy fall ahead?

I have a few trips to nyc for work. A half in cape cod and a full in nyc. Yup. Busy. Stressed. Any ribs still hurt when I do anything. I admit I’m feeling better. And it could have been worse.

Good luck with the travel logistics.

  2. I’d seen that ALW class with Jon, but opted for a Tunde class instead the other day. I’ll be sure to bookmark it, so thanx for the rec! My arms ALWAYS take a beating when I get vaccines, no matter what vax it may be. Great job with all our workouts!

Very smart to get those vaccines. There seem to be a lot of viruses going around now- at least you’re doing everything in your power to stay healthy.
You had a great week of running (despite the sore arms!) And you ran a big hill for the first time since the hamstring injury- just goes to show, once again, that everything heals eventually.
I’m usually underwhelmed by standing core workouts, but I did two this week that I liked. They both involved dumbbells, which I think is the key. Otherwise it doesn’t feel like you’re doing anything.

  4. Lots of travel does kind of take it out of you-I feel that. We have another out of town wedding next weekend. I got a fever after my Covid vax this time but nothing else. I don’t feel much with the standing core? Maybe I don’t engage correctly

  5. Jenn says:

We are planning a lot of travel this year. I never do the flu vaccine, but I think I”ll get the other one. Thanks for the reminder.

Scooby is always such a regal gentleman. He looks so big in that picture.

  6. Wendy says:

I’m getting my Covid shot this week–I am seeing a few patients with covid here and there, so I figured I should get it. I’ll get the flu shot in October–we’re offering at work to patients but I’m not seeing any flu yet.

Can you share your Chicago dates? I would love to see if we can make something work!

Crazy that you couldn’t sleep in on Saturday! It seems that your body is on early wake-up call. How are your stress levels? Still high?

A boring week is good, especially if you have such busy weeks ahead. I hope you get to meet up with Wendy in Chicago!

  8. I wanted to get my covid vax when I was back in the U.S. (it’s not a thing here, at least not for my demographic) but didn’t fit it in…maybe at Thanksgiving I will! Smart tip on the movement of the upper body post shot.

Good luck on the upcoming travel! Traveling for work is exhausting 🙂 But fitting in the fitness is even more important on the road!

  9. Debbie says:

Sounds crazy busy for you in the weeks ahead. We’ve got some local gravel biking events and then a race in Vermont in early October.

  10. cari says:

Nice matching on your Garmin on Friday.
I feel you on the calm but not boring. I’ll look to the sky to see you ping ponging to and fro

  11. I know that feeling of running a hill after hamstring injury! It made me nervous. Sounds like you didn’t have much downtime from your vaccines, other than sore arm? After you mentioned the COVID shot I starting thinking maybe I should have got mine before I went to Europe. oops. Fingers crossed neither of us get any kind of sickness from traveling!
