A Prayer For The Nation

No, I’m not going off-topic for the Weekly Wrap. 😉  I stumbled across an engraved Prayer for the Nation on one of my runs this week! For the first time in ages I ran from my office. The complicated logistics were well worth the views.

The Reflecting Pool is stunningly smooth!

A Prayer For The Nation

The route from my office took me past a lot of famous sites—the Kennedy Center, the Lincoln Memorial, the Reflecting Pool, the World War II Memorial, and the Washington Monument.

As I was heading back, this installation near the the World War II Memorial caught my eye.

It has a plaque with the speech President Roosevelt gave on D-Day, now known as A Prayer for the Nation. This is just the last panel:

I got chills reading it.

I know there are a lot of sights to see in D.C., but it still surprises me when I first notice something.

Weekly Wrap

After a week of opting inside, I broke out of the house for a few outdoor workouts—including that run. I did pretty well on my Breakthrough Crew bingo card—maybe I’ll get a few more squares tomorrow.

Sunday: Core + FB Strength + 30.25 mile Cycling
I started Sunday with two Flash 15 workouts and then went on a bike ride after breakfast.

I got sweaty, but it only felt hot when we stopped.

Monday: Core + 3.6 Scooby Miles + 20 min FB Strength
It was finally nice enough to take Scooby on a short run. He panted for a while after we got back, but didn’t seem too wiped.

Tuesday: Core Power Yoga
Tuesday morning was gorgeous, but I didn’t want to miss yoga, so I spent the coolest morning in ages in a hot yoga studio. 😉

Wednesday: 10 min Barre + 4.7 mile Run + 15 min FB Strength
After walking Scooby, I did a 10 barre class while he ate his breakfast, and then headed to my office for my run. After my run I did a 15 min strength class in my office gym to get that square on my bingo card.

Thursday: 5 min Core + 20 min FB Strength + 35 min Peloton rides
Office gym day! I stacked two upper body workouts from my bingo card that ended up being a tough combination! Denis’ “Sample That” ride based on James Brown songs was really good.

Friday: 10 min Core + FB Strength + 3.5 Tread miles
I took advantage of a work from home day and took a few strength classes before hopping on my tread. Marcel’s ALW class was no joke!

Saturday: 10 min Core + 5.0 Tread miles (Bootcamp)
It’s been ages since I did a Saturday 60 class, but the Jock Jams theme lured me in. I took three classes to warm-up for it—a core class, a running warm-up stretch class, and a warm-up run class. That didn’t make the bootcamp easy, but at least I was ready for it!

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Have you stumbled across a surprising sight on a walk or run?

  1. Oh, so many surprising sights! Nothing recently though. I love when I find something new! I have to imagine with a city like DC there’s often something new.

Great job getting out there for your runs! I’ll bet Scooby enjoyed it.

  2. Amen to that prayer! It is chilling to read. This week I did see 6 deer on my bike ride, and 4 were fawns. That was a fun thing to see. So cute!

  3. I saw many deer this week, including several fawns. Tis the season! I saw a few baby deer on my stroller run and my almost 2 year old loved it!!

  4. Darlene S Cardillo says:

I think I really need to get to DC and do a run or race!!

Our rail trail this month has lots of artwork for a scavenger hunt. I keep noticing different ones that I have missed.

  5. Deborah Brooks says:

It is definitely fun to notice new things on familiar routes. So much to see and do in DC!

  6. Jenny says:

That prayer was touching and heartwarming- and made me a little sad. Do we still have any politicians like that? What a different time.
Your week sounds great- lots of variety, with the Scooby run and the run from your office. I can’t say I’ve stumbled on any surprising sights lately, which makes me think I need to change up my route.

  7. Yes, that Marcel ALW class was a burner! I’d love to live in (or near) DC…all the monuments and such are just so beautiful. Thanks for sharing so many pics of all the sights. The reflecting pool…WOW!

  8. Catrina says:

Yay for office runs! Yes, much more logistics (did I pack my towel and shower gel?) involved but you were rewarded with a beautiful run!

We have a moat near our apartment in Zurich that used to be a protection for the city. Yesterday, I googled when it was actually built – 300 years ago with forced labour. And the place where we live used to be a public sewer. Eww.

  9. Wendy says:

Our nation could use a prayer or 2 right now! I echo what Jenny said. Scary times right now and glad you had that reflection.

You know I always see interesting things on my runs, lol! It’s all about being observant.

  10. Michelle says:

What an amazing discovery of that prayer – gave me chills to read it. And that photo of the reflecting pool :0 Makes me miss DC – it’s been so long since I was last there.

  11. Jessie says:

I need to try that arms and light weights class, it’s getting a lot of great recommendations!

  12. Cari says:

I love those stumble on moments! I’m also chuckling that the google map called out Farmers.. where we went for brunch last year
    There’s something about morning serenity.

  13. Jenn says:

I get to see neat stuff all the time, but it’s always fun to discover something new.

Jock Jams is always so motivating! I’ll do just about anything when that beat drops!

  14. Renée says:

That office run sounds amazing. I have never ever been to DC. The prayer is sadly still needed today. I totally understand you getting chills reading it!

good week for you and sounds like the saturday warming up was REALLY necessary. nice work!!

  15. Debbie says:

I’m sure that there are many things that would be new to me in DC since I don’t run or bike there very often. This morning I saw a deer at at distance on the W&OD Trail. When I caught up to her, I was surprised that she didn’t run and stood watching me alongside her two fawns who were standing on the side of the trail.
