Running Out Of January

I can’t top last week’s runrise photos, but I did catch a pretty sunrise behind the Masonic Temple on my run with Scooby. I only get a few glimpses of it on my route, but it’s a nice reward for reaching the top of  my neighborhood hills.

Running Out Of January

My Saturday long run was my only outdoor workout this week. At 8 miles, it also was my longest run since the Jingle All The Way 15K in December. I’ve been following the “advanced” long run mileage on the Matt Wilpers training program because it aligned with where I was. Since I’m not really training for a Half Marathon—I’ve got two 10 milers on the schedule for April—I may diverge from the weekly build to give my body more time to acclimate. Next week is a cut-back week, so I might do 8 miles again the week after that instead of bumping up to 9.

Scooby watching me on the tread. 🙁

I’ve been running 3 days a week and have logged 70 miles so far in January. With three more days in the month I could easily reach 75 miles, except Monday is a travel day and Tuesday I’ll be at a hotel with a Peloton, so I’m not sure I’ll get there. February will be an even lighter running month because we’re going skiing. That hotel does have a huge gym, but I don’t expect to use it. 😉

Sunday: Core + LB Strength + 20 min Ride + 10 min ALW
I did a long stack of short workouts with a little bit of everything. I bookmarked Robin’s class to take again—it had solid programming.

Monday: Core +  Strength for Runners + 5.0 tread miles
This week I did the easy run + strides workout on the treadmill, choosing a 30 min class for the run and a 15 minute class for the strides (10 X 15 sec w/45 sec recovery) plus cool down.

Tuesday: CorePower Yoga

Wednesday: Core + UB Strength + 30 min Peloton Ride
I had my office gym to myself for most of my strength class, and then another woman arrived and hopped on a treadmill. I chose another rock ride with Charlotte and ended up with a “PR”—it doesn’t mean much because I take so few classes on an actual Peloton bike, but it was a hard class.

I bring my own fan from home.

Thursday: Core + Barre + 5.0 Tread miles
Hannah Corbin has a new 15 min barre class that was really good for a pre-run workout. Then I did a progressive/endurance run on the tread choosing Andy Speer’s recent 45 min rock run for its playlist.

Friday: 45 min FB Strength + 20 min Ride
News flash—I did not hit the snooze button too many times. I really wanted to do a 20 mine ride as well as a 45 min strength workout and I had an 8 am conference call that I had to be dressed and caffeinated for, so I hopped out of bed with my 5 am alarm.

I truly earned my 2K minute badge with that class!

Saturday: Core + LB Strength + 8.1 Scooby Miles
I took one of Andy Speer’s new 10 min glutes + legs class as a pre-run warm-up—it had glute bridges, clam shells, etc. Then I bundled up and took Scooby out. It was in the mid-30s and a pleasant run. The hills on this route were rough in the moment, but my legs didn’t feel trashed afterwards.

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Crushing it with the workouts this month! You had a lot of variety in classes this week too. Looks like the peloton bike has grown on you! I have a giant fan near mine as well. I am going to try for 9 today and also cut back next weekend while I am traveling. Have a great week!

  2. Marcia says:

Omg I love that pic of Scooby watching you on the mill! Look at that ear! Lol! Great week of workouts for you!

  3. Debbie says:

Nice job on your workouts last week! Don’t you hate it when work gets in the way of workouts?

Awww, Scooby just wants to run with you. 🙂

  4. Yes, you did have a great variety of workouts! I need to get back to Barre workouts…somehow those have evaporated from my roster (probably because I’ve been doing the elliptical on Tuesday mornings in these colder months). I need to check out that one from Hannah (though Ally is usually my go-to for Barre).

  5. Jenny says:

Yes, Scooby was probably thinking “What in the world is she DOING???” At least he got in his long run yesterday. You really had a great week of workouts- lots of variety, and the best part is you got in some nice runs and nothing hurts. Sounds like you’re on a good path!

  6. Wendy says:

I echo everyone else about Scooby watching you on the mill–clearly, he was wondering why you were running without him! Nice job on your workouts and I’m glad you found a plan to get you ready for your spring races.

  7. That’s great that your legs didn’t feel trashed! That always feels great, doesn’t it?

Luckily Bandit just snoozes in the chaise when I’m on the treadmill (after nervously shadowing me as I get changed, afraid I’ll go somewhere without him).

I think you’ll get plenty of exercise skiing!

  8. Catrina says:

70 miles for January is great, especially considering all your other workouts!
Good luck with the travelling today and looking forward to your review of that conference!

  9. Susanne says:

That is a very good month of running! Good job with the other workouts this week too. Exciting about the skiing trip, I bet you’ll get lots of exercise just with the skiing.

  10. Jenn says:

Rockstar! I love that you bring your own fan! I sweat so much on treadmills and gym equipment so that is genius.

January was awful. All I can do is white-knuckle it to next month.

  11. Kim G says:

Those 45 minute Jess sims strength classes are no joke – nice job!
So smart to bring your own fans to the gym. I swear the hotel gyms always have their heat turned up to 80 – it’s nuts.

  12. Michelle says:

Fantastic week! You are crushing your workouts – 2K minutes already?!
That photo of Scooby – priceless 🙂

  13. Yay for an upcoming ski trip! I do have a weekend trip planned so I’m looking forward to that. So nice that you have a gym at your office!
