Sleeping It Off

No, I didn’t go on a bender over Thanksgiving. The cold my husband brought home from a conference finally caught me. Despite gorgeous weather this holiday weekend, I spent the mornings sleeping it off.

Essential cold supplies—I rarely order tea at Starbucks,
but when I do it’s a steamed milk with chai tea bags.

Sleeping It Off

My husband was finally recovering from his cold after two weeks, when my nose started itching. Tuesday I had several conference calls with the same person, and by the last one he asked me if I was getting sick because he could tell I sounded different—not to mention I had started sneezing.

Wednesday morning I took a break from working at home to get some cold medicine. It’s hard enough to figure out what I need when out of the sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffy head, fever list of symptoms I really only had the first two.  But then I was faced with these empty shelves in the cold remedy section.

Seriously?

I didn’t need any Mucinex or most of the ingredients in that lone bottle of Dayquil, so I scrounged until I found a store brand version of Sudafed.

Thanksgiving morning I woke up at 5:20 feeling pretty good, so I decided to take Scooby for a short run before starting to make my pain-in-the-ass apple pie. It was 6:00 am before I headed out, but I was surprised it was still completely dark out. I guess it’s been a while since I’ve run outside that early.

Starry, Starry Pie

I felt OK most of the day, but there were lots of tissues and even more hand washing. I was thankful I could still smell and taste our Thanksgiving dinner—we had ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, stuffing, raw Brussels sprout salad, cranberry relish, and biscuits.

Friday morning my husband took Scooby out, and I ended up sleeping until 9:30. That’s so unheard of for me! I only got up then because I was sort of hungry and knew I had a fridge full of yummy leftovers.

My favorite post-holiday breakfast!

I laid low Friday and barely even bothered with on-line Black Friday shopping. I slept pretty well Friday night until I woke up with a sneezing fit at 4 am. I let my husband do Scooby’s morning walk again Saturday, and slept until 8:30. Once I got moving I wished I had gotten up earlier, but I know I needed the rest. The weather was so gorgeous, it would have been perfect for a bike ride, but I didn’t want to risk a set back.

Weekly Wrap

Between the holiday and being sick, my workout routine was nothing but. I went to yoga on Monday, ran on my tread on Tuesday, and ran with Scooby on Thanksgiving, but everything else was pretty minimal.

Monday: Corepower Yoga + PT exercises
Tuesday: Core + 4.25 mile Tread Run
Wednesday: Core + Upper Body Strength
Thursday: Core + 3.86 Scooby Miles
Friday: Core + PT exercises
Saturday: Core + Lower Body Strength
Sunday: Core + 3.4 Scooby Miles

My Thanksgiving rally run

Nope, I was not tempted to keep going until I hit 4 miles. 😉

I’m trying not to freak out about what this long weekend off means for my 15K in two weeks. This was going to be a key long run weekend. Next weekend I will be at a resort hotel in Orlando (for work, don’t be jealous), so any running will be in the hotel gym. I guess this will make it even more important to let go of any time goals, and just focus on enjoying the event.

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Did you score any good Black Friday deals?

I’m so sorry the cold caught you. It’s going around everywhere lately. Both my kids were sick this past week and I am keeping fingers crossed by some miracle I am spared. Your pie is absolutely gorgeous! Feel better!

  2. Darlene S Cardillo says:

Oh no… sorry about the cold. The good news is not COVID, right?

I am tempted to make an apple… it’s my favorite dessert.

Nope, no Black Friday deals. I worked.

  3. Awww, I’m sorry the cold interfered with your training. But running for fun can be a great thing. I’m glad you’re feeling better! You’ve been so busy with work, little wonder that you caught the cold.

  4. Jenny says:

Oh, GREAT timing! I’m glad you were at least able to enjoy your Thanksgiving, and do some running- it could have been worse.
I’m very intrigued by that pie recipe. It’s definitely time consuming, but it must be amazing if you still make it every year. Maybe I’ll make it over Christmas.
I don’t know if you’ll feel up to it, but maybe you could do one last longer run in the middle of this week? I’m not sure if it’s necessary, but it might give you more confidence going into the race. But even if you don’t I think you’ll still be fine for the race. It’ll be a fun experience no matter what.

I thought about trying to squeeze in a long run — I’d have to do it before my flight on Wednesday, so we’ll see how ready I am by then.

  5. Bummer on the cold and its lousy timing, but I’m glad to hear you’re on the rally-back! That apple pie looks amazing…it’s a shame to have to cut into it and destroy it, LOL.

  6. Catrina says:

Coco slept until 9.30am!!!! Wow, you must have needed that! I’m glad you let yourself have that extra sleep, I’m sure it helped.
I was waiting for the appearance of the PIA apple pie!
You will be absolutely fine for that 15k even if you don’t run another mile until then.
Hope you get to enjoy Orlando a little bit!

Thanks for your vote of confidence! I did book a massage. I might pack my swimsuit, but we have a pretty packed schedule of meetings.

  7. oh sorry you were not feeling well. That cold was definitely going around the last few weeks. My husband had it too. I was crossing my fingers that I made it through Vegas without catching something. I think you will be just fine for the jingle race. I am bummed I won’t be in town for it. I still hope to coax you back to CB this year

  8. Debbie says:

What a miserable time to get sick and I hope you’re feeling better! I know that no time is a good time, but with your upcoming race and Thanksgiving weekend it must have been a bummer.

  9. Wendy says:

I’m so glad you’re feeling better. My go-to when I have a cold is either plain sudafed or Claritin-D. Mucinex doesn’t work. I poll my patients when they say they’re taking it and I’ve never had one say it was helpful, lol. Everyone is so sick right now and it was so nice to have a few days out of the office so I didn’t have to deal with it!!

  10. Kim G says:

Sorry that you had to deal with that cold over the holiday 🙁 But glad that you are feeling better. Hopefully by next week you will be 100%. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that the cold medicine aisle was bare considering all the illnesses that are out now, but the image still made me gasp!

  11. Michelle says:

So sorry about your cold! I’m glad it didn’t impact your Thanksgiving too much. Your pie looks amazing!

I hope you’re feeling better this week and can log some miles to prep for your race.
