Sacrificing My Saturday Morning

This weekend I sacrificed my Saturday morning to volunteer for the Race For Every Child 5K. The volunteer organizer is in my MRTT group and put out a bat call for volunteers. I thought I didn’t have anything else on my schedule, so I signed up for one of the earliest slots.

My view for most of the morning!

Sacrificing My Saturday Morning

I didn’t hesitate too much over the 5:45 am start time, even after I did the math and decided I’d need to set my alarm for 4:30. But then I remembered my son and daughter-in-law were staying over Friday night. At least with the “early” shift I’d be home before they got up. 😉 My bigger mistake was over which day I was meeting a friend to run. I had in my head that we were meeting Sunday, but our text messages confirmed we had agreed on Saturday. D’oh! Luckily I realized my mistake in time and her plans were flexible, so we could run on Sunday after all. Phew!

The race took place at Freedom Plaza in D.C., which is one of the main staging areas for D.C. 5Ks—and no wonder with that view of the Capitol! The first thing we did was set up the VIP breakfast tent—assembling tables, unpacking and setting up chairs, arranging tablecloths. After that I helped unpack and arrange post-race food and water bottles. Then I helped hand out bibs and t-shirts. The event supports Children’s National Hospital and there were several family groups with children who had been treated there.

Time flew by, and after we were sure no more stragglers were coming I headed to Starbucks—and then home for a nap!

Weekly Wrap

Probably the biggest news in Peloton this week is that we now know that Daniel McKenna was fired, because he filed a wrongful termination suit and Pelobuddy shared his complaint (which is a public document). So, now we have his side of the story. We’ll probably never have Peloton’s, since they surely will settle.

My week of Peloton workouts was less dramatic. 😉 I repeated the chest/triceps and back/biceps days of Robin’s  3-Day Split strength program, and subbed a different (harder for me) class for the leg day.

It has exercises that don’t come up in Peloton classes too much—like weighted hamstring curls.

I’ve also been doing the fall edition of the Matt Wilpers running program that Deborah’s written about. This week’s workouts were complex enough to get me to try to figure out how to program them in my Garmin.

My first attempt: time based intervals with my target pace in the notes.

I remembered Deborah’s post about how to do it, but still was impressed at how easy it was.

I love how easy it is to program repeated blocks—
it’s like they know what runners need!

My fun Peloton ride of the week was Jess King’s Rock Horror Picture Show ride from October 2019. I know I saw the movie once in high school, but I remember the music more than I remember the plot.

The weather Sunday morning was beautiful for our run. We did a loop from my office, running over Key Bridge, around Roosevelt Island, and then back over Memorial Bridge.

Definitely a highlight of the week!

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Did you ever see the Rocky Horror Picture Show? How many times?

I haven’t seen that movie since college. A zillion years ago.

I volunteered recently. So worth it.

I runfess I’ve only hit start and stop on my Garmin.

  2. It is fun to be on the other side of racing sometimes. Great way to give back. Glad you figured out how to program your Garmin. It is a great tool for intervals and to keep on pace. Looking forward to getting back at it

  3. What a gorgeous sunrise you had for your Sunday morning run! It sounds like it worked out just fine for you to reschedule your run. And good for you for volunteering at Saturday’s Race for Every Child 5K! Hope you had a nice visit with your son and d-i-l.

  4. I saw Rocky Horror a few times, in college. People really got into it there . . . it was interesting.

Your photos are stunning! Sounds like a fun, if hectic, weekend.

    What a busy weekend!
Well done on the volunteering! At least you got a Starbucks and a nap afterwards.
Were your son and daughter-in-law up when you returned? I hope you got to do something nice together.

  6. I haven’t seen Rocky Horror in years! Sounds like a full weekend. Hope you enjoyed volunteering!

  7. Wendy says:

Nice to give it back but those logistics! Glad you were able to work everything out. Your run looks beautiful! I need to get to DC to see all the sights!

  8. Jenny says:

I just read your reply to Catrina’s question- so you did the volunteer shift, went to Starbucks and your family still wasn’t up? I guess that worked out well! Good for you for volunteering on such a busy weekend.
It’s funny how out of the loop I feel now that I quit Peloton. So much drama! My workouts seem dull by comparison.
I think the beautiful Sunday run was your reward for volunteering on Saturday.

Yes, I was home @ 10 and they were not up yet. 😉

The Peloton workouts are drama-free. You have to join all the Facebook groups to find the drama. :-O

  9. Jessie says:

Good for you for volunteering and so glad it still worked out to run with a friend! The 3-day split sounds like a good challenge, I need to check it out.

  10. Michelle says:

That’s great that you volunteered – nice to give back to the running community!

The photos from your run this morning are beautiful!

  11. Kim G says:

Ohh that looks like a fun Jess King class! I haven’t done any of the split strength
programs yet. I still want to do the floor bootcamp classes. So many strength classes, so little time, lol.

So nice that you were able to volunteer at the race on Saturday despite the early wake up time.

  12. oooh, I need to try that Jess King class! It’s the perfect time of year for it, and now I’ve been venturing back to the confines of my basement (where the stationary bike resides). Thanks for your volunteer efforts!

  13. Jenn says:

Oooh. That’s some interesting Peloton tea. Never a dull moment.

Love that you were able to help out at that race. It sounds like a very worthy cause.

I don’t get to help at races too often – although I do enjoy it if I’m not running.

  14. The Rocky Horror Picture show was my jam back in college!! I’ve seen it in a theater several time and took props along. So fun! But, the plot kind of eluded me because we always had a few beers before the show so the ending was a bit fuzzy. haha! We’ve watched it at home too.
