Goodbye 2020, Hello 2021!

It seems like everyone is happy to be saying goodbye to 2020. Even though hanging up a new wall calendar doesn’t make anything everything better, it does help me look forward to what we all hope will be better days ahead. So, Hello 2021! Please don’t let us down like 2020 did.

We’re all jumping for joy on New Year’s Day!

Goodbye 2020

I didn’t do any “real” races in 2020 and only did two “virtual” ones, but 2020 was a great year for me fitness-wise. My Grave’s disease responded well to treatment, and I regained weight, strength, and endurance early in the year.

The low mileage in January had more to do with work than health.

I was just getting my groove back with Cyclebar, Orangetheory, and Corepower Yoga when the pandemic hit, but the Peloton app saved me from lackluster home workouts.

2020 Peloton Workout Summary

Obviously meditation isn’t my thing.

My husband’s done a lot of maintenance work around the house, but the only real “improvement” projects have been in my basement gym, where we added heavy duty floor mats–and a Schwinn IC4.

I’m so lucky to have this space!

Hello 2021

My main goal for 2021 is to really let go of that 100 mile/month running goal I’ve been chasing for the last few months, let my Achilles heal, and stay injury-free for the rest of the year. My new running mileage goal is 85 miles/month or 1000 miles/year. That will let me take rest days without feeling like I have to “make up” the “missed” miles. I’ve also signed up for Corepower Yoga on demand (now that it’s a more reasonable $19.99/month), and hope that helps fend off injury.

Over coffee, I shared cautiously optimistic as my “word” for 2021, but already on New Year’s Day optimism overtook caution. I signed up for the November 2021 Parkway Classic, and didn’t pay $15 extra to make my registration refundable.

2021 Parkway ClassicIf I’m not vaccinated by then,
I’ll count it as a donation to my local running store.

I also completed my twice-deferred registration for the Richmond Half, which is the next weekend in November. They are honoring the VIP registration I bought when I was going to run it on my birthday race in 2019 (before I got a DVT and Grave’s diagnosis), so I really hope the third time is the charm!

Weekly Run Down

My Achilles continued to tease me, but I stubbornly chased that 100 mile running goal for December, and even ran a bit extra when it was so nice on New Year’s Eve. I also participated in a few group events Kim organized–the New Year’s Day jump for joy photo collage and a Zoom ride on Saturday.

Monday: 10 min Core  + 3.4 Scooby Miles + 30 min Strength

Scooby by the candycane bush

I call this the candy cane bush–
the lights are red and white IRL

Tuesday: 3.6 Scooby Miles  + 30 min Bike Bootcamp + 20 min Strength
I did a little bit of everything, including a core-focused bike bootcamp which had 15 min of core work sandwiched between two 7 minute bike blocks. Will I ever like sprint intervals on the bike?

Wednesday: 40 min Strength + 20 min Tread + 30 min Corepower Yoga
I wasn’t planning to run, but after I finished my strength workout, I felt the treadmill calling my name. Later in the day I did a hip-focused Corepower Yoga class.

Thursday (New Year’s Eve): 4.8 Scooby Miles + 30 min Strength
With temperatures in the mid-40s and a rainy weekend forecast, I couldn’t resist a slightly longer running route. The pretty sunrise as we finished was a nice reward.

In between work and dinner, I squeezed in a 30 min Corepower Yoga class.

Friday (New Year’s Day): 3.5 Scooby Miles + 40 min Strength
Scooby let me sleep until 7, so I took him out first thing. After jumping for joy at the end of our run, I did a stack of Peloton Strength Workouts from the Peloton hardCORE Facebook group.

Saturday: 30 min Strength + 30 min Bike + 35 mile Ride
Started the day with an indoor ride along with these great ladies. Thanks so much to Kim for organizing and hosting! It was so fun to see each other and chat while we worked up a bit of a sweat.

Later in the day, my husband I rode from my son’s house in Chesapeake City (Maryland) to the end of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal in Delaware City (Delaware).

Chesapeake City BridgeThe canal links the Chesapeake Bay to the Delaware River. There’s a wide, paved path from Chesapeake City to Delaware City, which was our turn-around point.

George Washington crossed the Delaware River
further north, between Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The day got cloudier and we faced a headwind on the way back, but it was a fun ride.

Sunday: 10 min Core + 20 min Pilates + Corepower Yoga
My legs were dead from all that riding, so I took it easy and focused on core and gentle movement.

Thanks to Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down link up. We’ve gotten each other through 2020–let’s hope we are celebrating together in 2021!

What odds would you place on my November races?

I feel pretty optimistic about your November races. It’s a crap shoot but what can you do. That’s so great you were able to get out for a ride! We’re in total polar conditions now so that won’t be an option for some time. So much fun riding with you!

    • Coco says:

Our weather is all over the place, so it’s more a matter of seizing those opportunities before it gets too cold or too wet again — like today.

  2. kookyrunner says:

Way to end the year/start off the New Year strong! I really like your word/phrase for 2021 – I’m still deciding on mine but I have it narrowed down to 3 options. The sounds like an awesome deal for CorePower Yoga, especially for unlimited classes!

Loved riding with the group virtually yesterday and hope we can do it again soon!

  3. I am optimistic that the November race will happen. I am also hoping to do Cherry Blossom in September and my October wine glass half. You really ended the year with a stellar workout tally! Way to stay consistent this year. My goal is also to stay injury free this year fingers crossed for both of us

  4. Wendy says:

I was cautiously optimistic but my trail race for next weekend has been changed to virtual. If only people would behave! I thought for sure it would take place. The race is encouraging us to run the course and submit our times, so I will do that. I’m just so bummed.

  5. Birchwood Pie says:

I think that a November 2021 race is a safe bet;-) I sometimes default to high mileage instead of smart mileage, though 2020 was definitely the year for that. By far the best thing that I got out of the Peloton app was their yoga workouts.

    • Coco says:

Interesting! I am too hooked on the structure of Corepower. I did like some of the Peloton classes, but they felt more like stretching classes to me.

  6. Michelle D. says:

I’m encouraged to see you sign up for a couple of November races. The Richmond half was on my wish list for 2020 but things went south before I could register…perhaps 2021?

That’s great that it was warm enough for an outdoor ride on Saturday! It’s been so gray and raw here 🙁

It was great to catch up for a ride and chat! Hope we can do it again soon.

    • Coco says:

Our ride got cold when the clouds rolled in, but still I was only in long-sleeves and shorts. I’ve always heard great things about Richmond. I’d probably give it one more year if I didn’t have the deferral.

  7. That’s quite a ride you took yesterday, after the morning ride (and gift exchange) 😉 Even with a mountain bike (and decent tread on the tires), I don’t think I’ll be getting out for a few months. The cold weather feels downright frigid on the bike (at least in Iowa). That’s quite a count with all your Peloton classes!

    • Coco says:

Dressing for winter biking is hard for me – I hate being warm, but you do create your own breeze. Yesterday I wore one layer to my husband’s three!

  8. Lisa says:

I am feeling pretty optimistic about November races! There will probably still be protocols but hopefully by then enough people will have been vaccinated that races can safely be held. Great job this week!

    • Coco says:

I hope you’re right! I’m fine with protocols, and other than the start this race isn’t very crowded. Time will tell ….

  9. runswithpugs says:

I think you have a fair shot at your November races. It seems like events are coming back, so… fingers crossed.

I love your home gym space. I wish we had a room and the equipment to make something like that happen, but basements aren’t a thing where I live, and our garage would be sooooo hot.

It’s going to be a good year. Not perfect, but good. I can feel it.

  10. I kept meaning to, and forgetting to, message Kim about the cycle ride. Oops! Sorry I missed that.

I am very driven in some areas of my life, not in others — thankfully mileage is not one of the areas I’m driven in. Which helps me listen to my body more — although I can be as stubborn as the next person, too.

I can’t believe you didn’t pay that extra $15 for Richmond though! I know I would have done that. $15 isn’t much for peace of mind. I’ve been trying to talk to Mr. Judy about travel at some point this year (it’s been almost a year since he’s seen his family in the flesh), but he is not a planner & I’m not making any headway. 🙁

    • Coco says:

I didn’t have an option to insure Richmond, it’s the local race I didn’t pay extra for. Like I said, if it comes to it, I’m happy to support my local running store that organizes it — although maybe they’ve got real insurance for the cancellations ….

  11. I did the Dopey Challenge in January, and then everything else went virtual. Honestly, I don’t think I’d feel comfortable doing any size race IRL until at least the summer.

  12. I may be going to Richmond for the race but only to spectate. I know a few OIselle girls will be going as well. I haven’t signed up for any races this year but have a few in mind.
