Last week in an address to the partners, the Chairman of my law firm said, “When the pandemic ends–and it will end–….” I’m sure his plans for the future are important, but what I really needed to hear was the reminder that eventually, someday, this too shall pass, and we will get back to more precedented times.
The overuse of “unprecedented times” in every conversation and news story bothers me because there are much worse “challenging times” in the history of human civilization, but this meme is one of my favorites.
When Will We Get Back To Precedented Times?
This week I will commence my sixth month of working from home, my six month of Saturday night take-out instead of Saturday nights out, and my six month of Scooby Miles and Peloton workouts instead of Orangetheory, Cyclebar and Corepower Yoga classes. After all these months of social distancing, it’s hard to imagine going back into the office, eating inside a crowded restaurant, or sweating in a full studio class–although I know some of you already are engaging in some variations of these activities.
My office won’t start reopening until at least November, and when we do it will be a staged, voluntary process. I don’t think we will be expected to be back in the office until sometime in 2021.
I do miss this view out my office window …
My church currently is holding services outside, but trying to imagine how to orchestrate an indoor Christmas service that would be safe and feel comfortable for vulnerable members of our congregation.
My Orangetheory, Cyclebar and Corepower accounts are on hold, but some days I do feel almost ready to go back–until I see Virginia caseloads staying high after a dip in June.
Daily new case data for my city.
Hospitalization numbers also have risen since early June.
When things were allowed to reopen in June, I decided to wait and see what happened. Looking at the data, it’s clear case numbers climbed, but they didn’t spike like they did in other places where masks are not required and social distancing in public places isn’t enforced. Recently I enjoyed lunch at a restaurant outside and finally got my hair cut. But looking at the data convinces me to wait and see and while longer before going back to other activities I enjoyed in more precedented times.
Weekly Run Down
Pelothon 2020 is over, but I have to brag on my Breakthrough crew team, which finished ahead of the others based on the percent of members who completed all four weekly challenges, with 32% completing all challenges (on a week-to-week basis, 45-50% completed the weekly challenge).
I think we should get extra credit for having the most members too!
With the challenge over my workout selection was more random, but I ended up taking two classes that are overall favorites:
Matty Maggiacomos’s 30 Min Y2K Fun Run (5/23/19)
The playlist made a progression run natural with each song having higher beats per min (bpm) than the previous one. Plus, Matty always is going to make you smile.
Matt Wilpers’ 10 Min Strength For Runners Class (8/28/19)
I’m working my way through Matt Wilpers’ Strength for Runners workouts, and this one is a keeper. It’s all PT-type exercises focused on glutes and hips on the floor. I did it twice this week, and should put in regular rotation.
Monday: 2.4 Scooby Miles + 2.4 Treadmill Miles
+ 40 Min Peloton Strength Workouts
It was warm and humid, so I took Scooby on a shorter run and added a few miles on the treadmill before tackling my strength and core workouts.
So dark before 6 am now!
Another 20 min core class! The variety makes it “hard but do-able.”
Tuesday: 3.15 Scooby Miles + 40 min Strength Workouts
Started a bit later so it would be a bit lighter for our run, and really loved this Y2K Fun Run.
I finally braved this Jess Sims workout. It turns out I don’t mind burpees so much when they mean I get a break from jumping jacks. š
Wednesday: 3.0 Treadmill Miles + 20 min Peloton Strength Workouts
A rainy morning meant starting my day with Peloton strength workouts to wake up and getting in 3 treadmill miles during a 60 min bootcamp.
Thursday: 3.15 Scooby Miles + 30 min Peloton Strength Workouts
I’m so used to the 5K route from my July run streak, I’m finding it hard to quit it–it’s a good route and a good distance, and I haven’t found a better alternative.
I learned my hips have no business in an advanced hips flow, even if it’s mostly a stretching sequence.
Friday: 2.30 Scooby Miles + 2 Treadmill Miles + 20 min Peloton Strength
Tried a new route with Scooby, but any time I saved from its shorter distance I spent getting him to pose in this flower bed. š
Last week Peloton dropped a new series of Prince-themed workouts, so I took my first arms toning class with Ally Love. They still are not my favorite type of class (low weight/high rep), but this one wasn’t too bad, I liked Ally a lot, and the playlist was fantastic.
Saturday: 6.5 Scooby Miles +20 min Peloton Strength + 21.5 Miles Cycling
It was cooler and less humid than it has been–even though it was drizzling–so I took Scooby out for a longer run. My right piriformis (?) felt tight, so when I got home I did that Matt Wilpers Strength for Runners class again as well as a 10 min core class.Ā
After waiting for scattered showers that never came, we headed out for a bike ride, which of course brought the rain drops. It never did more than drizzle, so I’m glad we went.
Sunday: 25 min Corepower Yoga + 20 min Peloton Core
A rainy Sunday morning was perfect for a yoga and core workout. Corepower doesn’t have many free classes on its site anymore, but this 25 min hips sequence was good.
I was surprised how hard chaturanga was
after so many weeks without doing it!Ā
Then I doubled up on Peloton Artist Series core classes, doing Emma’s new Prince workout and Selena’s Dolly Parton workout. It was a tough combination!
Thanks to Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down link up. Even if my weeks are pretty much the same, I enjoy seeing what others are doing.
Are you paying for digital access to any workouts? I happily pay $13.99/month for Peloton, but am not will to pay $19.99/month for Corepower Yoga.
Another solid workout week for you! Glad you are fully taking advantage of Peloton classes. I also am pretty tired of the “unprecedented” times. Kind of feels good to escape to the college town life for a few days.
Hah! Are they living back in precedented times whether they should be or not? š
Really? They’re calling it “unprecedented times”?! Haha, you are right, it looks like some people didn’t pay attention in their history lessons.
Well done on your workout week, Coco!
I especially like that “Strength for Runners” workout with PT type exercises for the hips and glutes. The older I get, the more I see how important they are!
And I wouldn’t pay USD 20.- a month for Corepower Yoga either – especially when there is so much available for free.
I agree with you, I’m ready for precedented times! Although I don’t think we will (or should) return to life as it was before. A little kindness and caring please. Less greed. Fingers crossed for all good things.
You do know thereās an election coming up, donāt you? š
I absolutely love the title of your post because I’ve been wondering this as well. I also can’t believe that I’m nearing the 6 month mark for working from home when I literally thought it would only be 2 weeks at first – so crazy how quickly things changed.
I just took Matty’s Y2K Pop Fun Run yesterday and really enjoyed it too! Matty and Jess are my favorite instructors to run with outdoors.
How little we knew back then ā and how much we still donāt know!
I like Matt Wilpersā Outdoor runs a lot too ā when I donāt need so much chatting to motivate me.
I think I’ve kind of given up on expecting things to ever really return to the way they were. Of course I realize now how much I took for granted. Like not having to wear a mask. Great week of workouts for you!
True! I think we have to get used to masks for a long time.
I do pay for several different apps for fitness. Some Iāve been paying for for a while ā but I donāt belong to a gym.
I keep telling my mom this too shall pass. Itās sad how fearful & negative sheās become, but OTOH sheās doing ok. Not sure how Iāll be able to see her when it gets colder but weāll see.
Yep on with you on being ready for precedented times!
Our BreakThroughCrew rocked!! š I’ve done a couple of Matt’s classes but haven’t done this one – I’ll be checking it out tomorrow!
You had another great week of workouts!
Thanks, you too!
For sure I will take these “unprecedented times” over many of our past troubles. It’s just going to get harder when winter comes and outdoor activities start to drop off. But it’s important to realize that even thought there is no end in sight that “normal” will come back some day. There will be a vaccine, and the world will figure out how to live with the pandemic.
True on all counts. We just have to be patient and ride this out.
EVERYTHING is unprecedented. That, Pause, Pivot and Abundance of Caution need to go away. Seriously. We have some folks going in if they need to get something, and a handful worked from there due to lack of power at home, but we have no immediate return to the office either. I can (2.5 miles), but I don’t need to and am not crazy about elevators yet
My husband is living out of an abundance of caution, and I am ready to pivot. š
*Giggle*
Our cases look similar to yours. There is a big focus on the positivity rate going down but I am more concerned that cases are still higher than they were a few months ago. I get the sense a lot of people are getting tested just to know if they have it and don’t necessarily have symptoms, so that is going to impact the positivity rate. My husband and I started having conversations about what the holidays will look like this year. Its going to be hard making decisions about who we are comfortable seeing because many of our family members live out of town and travel for work.
Good point on āhealthyā people getting tested. There is a lot of that here for people going back to school, and people getting tested so they can travel for vacations.
I’m just still in shock that this year turned out this way. I’ve fallen into a new normal of sorts and definitely coping. But boy do I miss those “precedented” times, LOL!
Youāve had to cope with much harsher restrictions than we have, too!
So weird. Yours is one of the blogs I have trouble with on my ipad.
Anyway . . . I tried to write that I often tell my mom this too shall pass. It should be the other way around, right? She should be telling me. But we often change as we age.
Seriously, there will be an end. And then probably the next big thing. Oh, and of course we’ll all be complaining about the election soon.
Sorry about the blog issues! I know what a pain that is. Arenāt we already complaining about the election? š
Nice workouts.
It’s so hard to know the right thing to do in these situations. I’m not paying for online classes right now, but we did pay for A’s virtual karate and Mr Pugrunner is doing virtual coaching.
I will be getting my hair done. In two weeks. I think. I’m nervous, but with care and precautions, it should be ok.
My hair is so short, my appointment barely took 15 minutes.
Iām sure you get your moneyās worth from the karate classes. My feeling on Corepower is more because I wouldnāt do the classes very often.
You are killing it with your workouts! I love seeing the variety of classes you are taking. I am also exploring and doing different things too.
6 months already? Wow!
I pay $39.99 for my Peloton membership. It is more than what I would pay for a gym membership. However, it is worth it!
I think itās interesting that they charge more if you have their bike or tread. I guess because they record/host more data? Either way, itās worth it!
It is interesting but definitely worth it.
I’ve had my hair done and had a few patio meals and run with a few friends who I trust (a few of which have even recently tested negative because they are paranoid like me!) Everyone is comfortable with different activities- I’m way more likely to put on a mask just walking around even outside, like this past weekend at a sculpture park, than my husband. We aren’t required to wear them outside. But I just feel really anxious around other unmasked people.
ANYWAYS- it’s crazy that it’s been SIX months. I’m ready for precendented times too!
For me itās been 5, starting on 6, but it feels like forever!
I think we are supposed to wear masks outside where we might encounter others, with exceptions for vigorous exercise. But we donāt do much!
Sounds like a good week overall! I don’t think I’ve tried those strength training for runners work outs, I’ll have to look for them. That’s good news that your office isn’t expecting people back in person until next year. I think our’s is the same.
Well done #BreakThroughCrew!! That Prince series really sounds like a great program. It was nice to get back to my ānormalā routine (with electricity)…but it still feels oddly off. Still debris everywhere & a nasty tree awaiting a tree service to āfixā it LOL. But it did reinforce that tough times DO NOT last I definitely:-)
