This week was all about figuring out and participating in week one of Peloton’s 2020 Pelothon challenge. I found the Facebook group for my Breakthrough Crew team early on, and it became a great resource for information and motivation.
Pelothon 2020 Week 1 Workouts
The challenge for week 1 was to take one class with each of the instructors on your team. Peloton created “collections” of classes for each team, but I was glad to learn those were only suggestions because it included only indoor cycling classes for several of my team’s instructors.
I chose my team because I knew and liked four of the instructors already–Adrian, Chase, Emma and Matt. Kendall and Jenn mostly lead cycling classes, but they also have “toning” and core classes, so I was able to check all the boxes on my challenge tracker.
While I don’t love Kendall’s arms toning workouts, I know it’s good to mix things up and have variety in my workouts, so I’m going to try to fit them all in over the course of the challenge. Jenn has two core workouts I like, but I may try her arms toning classes as well.
Weekly Run Down
With daily runs, strength workouts, core workouts, and a few stretching programs, I logged 25 Peloton workouts this week. Clearly the challenge is motivating me! In keeping with the Pelothon food bank charity theme, I’m going to make a $125 donation ($5 per class) to a local food bank.
The other thing to know about this week was our heat wave. By Wednesday we had tied a record for consecutive days with 90+ degree temperatures at 20 days. Thursday topped out at 89F, but on Friday it hit 93F again. On the weekend we reached the upper 90s with the heat index over 100. That heat was combined with high humidity which made it pretty gross outside.
Monday: 5 Scooby Miles + 40 min Peloton Strength Workouts
I woke up really early and chased the sunrise for 5 miles to kick off the first day of Pelothon 2020. It was my first outdoor run with Matt Wilpers and I really enjoyed his coaching.
I didn’t enjoy the boxing moves in Kendall’s arms toning workout–boxing has never been my jam–but I liked Jenn’s core workout.
Tuesday: 3 Scooby Miles + 40 min Peloton Strength Workouts
My first Skirt Sports top from so many years ago!
Wednesday: 5.5 Scooby Miles + 10 min Peloton Core Workout
Despite our heat wave, it was pretty pleasant at 6 am, so I took Scooby on our longer neighborhood loop. I didn’t listen to a Peloton Outdoor Run, but I did listen to the #BreakthroughCrew playlist Emma Lovewell made on Spotify.
I had an 8:00 am conference call to get ready for, but still squeezed in a 10 minute core workout and 5 min stretching program after our run.
Thursday: 3 Scooby Miles + 35 min Peloton Strength Workouts
It was back to full-on gross outside, but Scooby and I both are acclimated enough for these short runs.
Adrian’s strength workout had four circuits with different moves, except the last move of each circuit was a 30 second plank. After all that planking, I figured a 5 min core workout would be enough!
Friday: 3 Scooby Miles + 30 min Peloton Workouts + 20 mile bike ride
Took 3/4 of the day off from work and met Deborah for another fun bike ride. There are several fun photo ops along the bike path, but I love this mural.
I chose easy-ish Peloton workouts between my run and ride. The “strength for runners” workouts fall somewhere between a traditional lower body workout and physical therapy exercises, with single leg and balance moves.
Saturday: 3 Scooby Miles + 20 min Peloton Treadmill + 10 min Peloton Core
The only non-cycling workout in the Breakthrough Crew collection I hadn’t done yet was this 20 minute treadmill workout with Adrian, so my plan was to hop on the treadmill after taking Scooby out. My right ITB has been feeling tight, so I decided to do this foam rolling program with Matt Wilpers first–it has the structure I need to work on those tender spots. I decided to make it a morning with the guys, and chose a 10 min core workout with Chase Tucker.
I did all those workouts thinking my husband wasn’t planning a bike ride, but when he decided to go out, I went along for a 20 mile ride.
It wasn’t too bad until the last mile when I had so much sweat stinging my eyes,
Sunday: 3 Sccoby Miles + 20 min Peloton Strength Workouts
As I headed out at 6 am The Weather Channel app said it was 75F wih a “feels like” of 78F, so I wasn’t sure I’d run at all. I must be getting used to it, though, because it didn’t feel that bad–at least not for 3 miles before the sun was out.
I wrapped up my Pelothon 2020 week 1 workouts with Kendall’s 10 min “Bollywood” arms toning workout (loved the music, still didn’t love the boxing) and a repeat of Jenn’s 10 min intermediate core workout.
Thanks to Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down link up. Even if my weeks are pretty much the same, I enjoy seeing what others are doing.

Are you suffering through mid-July heat wave?
What’s your favorite way to stay cool?
Nice work on the Pelothon. I don’t quite understand how it all works, but it looks like fun!
It’s pretty simple — you pick a team and there’s a different challenge each week. Peloton keeps track of how many classes your team takes and how many members complete the challenge.
Nice job getting your challenges done this week. It is fun to take new classes w new instructors. Loved our bike ride. stay cool this week 🙂
It is good to try out new instructors. Jenn needs more core classes. 😉
I stay cool by staying inside in the afternoon. In the morning I’m usually out either running or walking the dogs early, and I’m still doing Yoga outside (it’s so shady back there!). By the afternoon I’m ready for the AC though.
That is a whole lot of Peloton workouts! Whew! I actually used to love kickboxing. Killed my elbows though; I have to be careful about that! It was such a great way to get out some aggression . . . hmmm . . .
I didn’t know they had a foam rolling stuff on Peloton. I’ll have to look for that!
Sounds like you had a great week, Coco, and how lovely to meet up with Deborah.
Matt Wilpers has 2 foam rolling classes and then there’s a whole series with a woman instructor — maybe under “collections“?
Thanks; I’ll look for them!
Great job on the Peleton challenge.
And meeting up with Deborah. So fun.
We’ve had a heat wave too. I ran early yesterday so it was so bad. Today at the lake where it is quite breezy.
I try to find shade for running or hiking. Just do less and slower. Better than ice and snow.
Lake breezes sound pretty fantastic!
Awesome start to Pelothon 2020! I really love this challenge and it has exposed me to instructors I haven’t tried before – Kristin and Erik. I picked my team primarily because of Jess and Cody – I just love that combo and they are the instructors I take most often. Thanks for the idea of donating to local food banks each week of the challenge – such a great idea!
It was so steamy this week! I kept all of my workouts outside. I can’t express how much I hate summer running so if I’m not training for anything I won’t force myself to run outside. I guess that’s one good thing about not having any races on the calendar for this Fall.
It was so hard not to pick Jess’s team, but since I don’t do the cycling classes, I opted for the team with Chase and Adrian. 😉
It seems to me that Peloton knew what they were doing when they picked mid July to start the challenge. Now everyone has a reason to be excited about being inside.
So true! It came at a good time.
Great week with the Challenge! It’s funny I actually really liked Kendall’s arm classes, but then again I’m a big fan of boxing as a workout. I had no idea that Matt has a foam rolling class – I will definitely be adding that one in.
And I love your idea of making a food bank donation!!
I know I don’t like the boxing moves because I’m not good at them — I’m sure my form is all wrong and I’m too timid with the punching. 😉 I’d only taken one of Matt’s strength for runners classes, but found a lot more I like.
Great week of the Challenge! I’m not using Peloton anymore. I just signed up for another app which seems very much like Peloton (but will never be!). The instructors are interesting. I’ve only taken 2 classes, so I still need to give it a chance.
There are so many options out there — Peloton really clicked for me. I hope you share your thoughts on the one you’re trying.
Great week, way to rock the Pelothon! I have never accessed the app (#mybad), so I would be clueless. I didn’t realize so many of the classes are 10-20 minutes, that really makes it easy to get a good variety of classes and instructors.
The short classes make it easy to fit ^something^ in — and then I usually go for more.
Looks like you’re off to a great start on the Pelothon! Yeah it’s gross here too. But summer will be over soon enough so I’m doing my best not to complain about the heat. Boxing is so not my jam either.
It was 83 at 5 am today — I’m complaining! 🙂
Great job with all those classes this week! The heat has really been relentless. I’ve just been trying to get out early but even that isn’t helping too much!
Yeah, when the heat doesn’t break over night, there’s really no relief!
Well done with all the Pelothon classes, Coco!
I love going on bike rides too, especially when it’s hot. Even better when you can get a ride with Deborah!
It was so nice to ride toghether!
Great job on the Pelothon challenge! It’s nice that they offer classes of all different lengths so you can mix and match. The heat and humidity has been tough here too. I try to get out early but even then, I am drenched by the time I am finished. Yesterday was a scorcher!
I think a lot of the classes are designed to be add-ons to bike rides. I also find the short ones are more efficient with less chit-chat.
You’re the third person I’ve read who is doing the Pelethon Challenge! Sounds awesome – I think you either like boxing workouts or you don’t. I have a friend who lives for workouts that involve some kind of boxing, but I really struggle with them (or let me rather say, I don’t enjoy them much!).
I’ve just never liked boxing! Even though I used to do TKD, It’s different though.
25 classes? You, Kim, and Debora win for taking the most classes each week. I took 6 last week and was pleased with myself. I was so stuck on only cycling classes that I did not bother to check out the others. Yes, this was after reading all of you 3 talk about them. 🙂
I want July to be over so it can cool down.
The other classes are shorter, so it’s easy to stack them. You should try the stretches at least!
I did and it felt great!
Way to go on your challenges! And way to go, Scooby! He’s such a great pup!
Just getting through the summer as best we can. There’s not much we can do to get away from it. I used to love to go to the beach to cool down, but my ankle makes it hard to feel stable walking out in the water.
